Symmes Valley 72
Western Pike 66 a final

...a physical game , a combined 49 FTs shot during the game , 47 turnovers , 49 three pointers taken ... other than the opening minute of play when Western took a 4-0 lead THAT was the only lead the Indians would see in the game ... the leading scorer on the season, Ethan Smith, for SV sat out all but the first minute & change of the opening quarter after getting an inadvertent shot to the nose by a Western defender as the senior was bringing the ball down in transition, he would not return until "round" 2 ... one thing I learned from watching video on SV is that they ARE NOT a one man show ... even missing 6-3 Logan Simpkins due to an ankle injury , Smith has quality, hard-nosed (no pun intended) compadres he runs with ... 5-10 soph Gradee Holland, 6-3 jr. Tanner Corn, 6-3 sr. Willie Jones, 6-2 fr. Bronx Carpenter , & off the bench 6-0 fr. Asher Maynard ... when Smith sat the first quarter - one would have thought - advantage Western ... as it turned out, losing Smith for 1 qtr. seemed to "release the hounds" as the Vikings turned up the physicality of play which apparently is contagious as the Indians followed suit ... 49 free throws were shot in this one ... SV going 20/28 from the line and WHS 13/21 ... both team had players foul out in the final quarter ... for Western one of their leading scorers Drew Haggy picked up his 3rd and 4th fouls within 10 secs of each other in the 3rd which gave him a seat on the bench for close to 7 minutes of game time in the 2nd half ... the physicality of the game allowed the game to be in some ways dictated by the calls on the floor ... Symmes Valley 72 Western Pike 66 a final ...

... in the first with Smith on the bench (no points) ... fr. Landon Owens for WHS scored on a transition bucket , sr. 6-1 Kam Janes followed with 2pts from the left block ... Western's only lead as SV stormed back led by 6-2 fr. Bronx Carpenter's 9 pt quarter - 4/4 from the line, a transition bucket off of one of WHS's 9 turnovers in the opening period 2pts. ... Carpenter had lots of help as Tanner Corn/Willie Jones & off the bench fr. Asher Maynard each netted 4 points in the qtr ... for Western following the opening 4 pt lead , the Indians turned the Vikings over 9 times as well - got to the FT line an equal number of times - 6 but were only able to convert on 2 of the charity stripe attempts ... Haggy chipped in 1/2 from the line, a trey from deep and a transition finish at the rim (6pts) ... Janes closed out the frame with 5 pts and Landon Owens 2pts on the opening transition bucket ... Symmes Valley 21 Western 13 after 1 ... following the combined 18 forced and unforced turnovers in the opening quarter, Symmes Valley continued the gift giving, committing 6 miscues to Western's 4 ... each team converting a pair of opposing team TOs into points ... the seniors for both teams were showcased in the 2nd as Ethan Smith re-entered the contest to put up 8 points with a couple of transition finishes (4pts) , a drive and finish for 2, and a smooth pull-up midrange jumper 2 pts... Smith's senior running mate, 6-3 Willie Jones, added 2 shots in the paint for 4 pts ... Western countered with its own senior duo as Haggy added 6pts to his total for 12 in the half ... lefty Kam Janes added 5 pts on a pair of 2 pters and 1/3 from the FT line ... when the 2nd period dust cleared the team from WestLA had closed the gap out-scoring SV 15-12 in points ... won the turnover battle 13-16 ... Symmes Valley 33 Western 28 at the half ... from the Cheaps Seats after 2 quarters - Western's offensive trio of Janes/Haggy/Owens scored the ball accounting for all 28 points - the other pieces for WHS struggled finding the bottom of the net from anywhere on the floor ... lots of missed 3's (5/33 for the game), lots of missed shots at the rim, mix in the turnovers (20 for the game) ... the trend continued into the 3rd for the Indians as anyone not named Kam Janes couldn't/didn't find the score sheet for WHS - matters got worse as Haggy picked up fouls 3 & 4 within 10 secs of each other - leaving the scoring up to Kam Janes ... Janes' 12 points (6/6 from the line... 2 drives down the left side of the lane for buckets at the rim (4pts) and a pair of coast to coast transition buckets (4pts) kept the Indians in the game )... for the Vikings Smith went to the line to sink 4/4 to go with a deep 2 pter and a drive & score ... 8pts in the qtr 16 on the gm ... Jones added 6 pts. on his own ball going 2/2 from the stripe, a transition 2 pter and a midrange jumper ... Symmes Valley 49 Western 43 after 3 ... Western opened the 4th with a 7-4 run to pull within 50-53 with 5:55 on the clock ... Janes with a deep three to start the run - Haggy remained on the bench with 4 fouls - a Janes assist to Alex Siliven crossing the lane and finishing for 2 pts ... a Janes offensive board and putback finished the run ... Smith for SV wouldn't allow the Indians to close the gap further as the senior sg/pg went 1/2 from the line before draining a 3 pointer ... 50-53 ... in the end each team matched the opposing team shot for shot ...Western when given the opportunity to forge a tie or get within one point - didn't get it done ... Smith finished the qtr with 10 pts/26 on the game ... big 3 pointers from Gradee Holland and Asher Maynard in qtr. ... Corn added 2pts with a wide open lane drive for 2pts ... for Western, Janes added 9 pts /33 on the night .. Haggy returned with less than 5 minutes to play, adding 7 pts ... fr. Landon Owens with a putback bucket and trey for 5pts in the qtr ... after 50-53 SV ... Symmes Valley led 54-58 with 3:54 on the clock ... at :48 on the game clock Western was down 63-67 ... SV foul shooting ended the game as both Carpenter and Smith went 2/2 each in the waning seconds ... Symmes Valley 72 Western 66 a final ...

... I never regret making the almost 2 hr trip to WestLA ... always good basketball ... over the years I have gotten to know the folks in Latham, Elementary Principal/Scorekeeper Bethany Baer Whitt - outstanding principal, all around good person ... Superintendent Brewster, since traveling to Western over the years and being now a retired teacher of 42 years myself - I know good schools ... Mr. Brewster, his district certified/classified staff are outstanding in providing for the educational, vocational needs of the students now and after graduation - always with needs of the community as a whole in mind ... Mr. Brewster made his way into the cheap seats to give pfloyd a shout, had the pleasure to meet Coach Buckler's father who joined pfloyd in the cheap seats to talk basketball ... Jody Corcoran Rittenhouse , great to see you last night ! ... was introduced to Mr. & Mrs. Robert "Bob" Thompson who I sat next to last night! Bob Thompson one of the 5 Thompson brothers who all played high school ball and went on to play D1 college ball - Bob, Ken, Heckie, Bill, Denny - all HOF'ers... Bob played his college ball for Coach Fred Taylor at OSU ... Bob graduated from Waverly High School as the season record holder for most points in a single season and career when he attended WHS ... I believe his own brother Denny, broke both of those records when he too attended Waverly high school ... who knew that I would be sitting amongst basketball royalty in WestLA last night ! - good people ...

I haven't put together next week's Menu of Games yet, I may make the trip to Beaver myself Saturday night - we'll see who else is playing next weekend ... next Friday night is Warren entertaining Meigs at the Coliseum @ Warren High School - everything will be planned around that one LOL ...

... I would be remiss if I didn't mention getting the opportunity to meet Coach Carpenter the HC for the Symmes Valley Vikings ... I don't go in search of coaches on game day, I figure they have their routine they go through - so I leave them alone ... besides, who am I anyway? - a no body ... Coach Carpenter, came up to the cheap seats , we talked a little of everything, lots of hoops ... thank you sir, I appreciate the job you and your fellow coaches all do in coaching/teaching the game of basketball and life lessons to the student athletes you work with ...
