... Coach Shaeffer's Fairfield Union Falcons arrived in Barlow at the Warrior Coliseum to take on Coach Maddox's Warren Warriors with a lineup that sported 3 seniors in the starting lineup to go with 2 sophs ... first off the FU bench is 6-4 freshman Asa Kline ... 6-1 soph Dean Clark, 6-4 soph Keaten Webb, 6-1 soph Kader Woltz and 6-3 senior Hunter Clark ... a deep, youngster laden squad ... while Coach Maddox opens with 5 senior starters, next 4 off the bench are seniors before getting to 2 jrs and a soph on the roster ... last night everyone played for Warren ... last night everyone played for FU ... FU has talented youngsters, Warren has talented, experienced, "old veterans" , strong, 3,4 year starters ... Warren is last years' D2 SE Regional finalist team minus one (a big one in 6-7 Trent Taylor) ... at this point in the season, imo - THIS YEARS' Warren team is BETTER than last years' D2 district champion and regional finalist team ... in the first 2 quarters vs FU it showed ... ... Warren on the season has averaged 66 ppg on offense while giving up 43 ppg defensively ... unfortunately for Warrior opponents of late - the last 7 games - Coach Maddox's Warriors have "figured IT out" ... they have moved past "being without a 6-7 , talented at both ends of the floor, backstop, post player" ... they have settled on a starting group that best compensates for NOT having 6-7 behind the pressure perimeter D ... TEAM defense IS better than last season - the on ball pressure is better, switching on the perimeter is better, defensive rotations are better, backside help is better ... the overall maturity level of TEAM is better ... in the last 7 games of the current 14 game win streak the Warriors defensively are giving up 36 ppg to their opponents ... offensively Warren in the last 7 games are at a 68 ppg clip with running clocks in 5 of the last 7 games - perimeter scoring is still led by Julian Stadelman BUT perimeter scoring beyond the arc has been more consistent by committee - Jacob Sealey has found the range & confidence, Connor Barry is getting his 2,3,4 threes an outing ... Colin Anthony comes off the bench and is instant offense and defense - getting a couple of threes himself per game to go with transition buckets at the rim ... the back end of the defense is solid - with Chase Lupardus figuring out how to guard bigger players inside using his strength in the paint while offensively averaging close to 18 ppg, down low in starting lineup is 6-5 Hayden Wells - boards at both ends, defensive intensity, scoring in the paint, backside rotation on defense - he's led the defensive surge for WHS ... Nick Cressey had been starting at the beginning of the year but the senior is most comfortable coming in off the bench - outstanding defensive/on the boards and in the transition game ... stepping up his game in the last 7 contests has been 6-4 senior Tyson Cochran - defense, rebounding at both ends AND knocking down the 3 ball ... seniors - confident, stronger versions of their inexperienced selves NOW having seen figuratively/literally everything in their 4 years under Coach Maddox ... handling pressure situations both "in season" and in the "one and done" season ... the "been there, done that, know what it takes to be successful, know what they did wrong in past situations enough to make corrections now" TEAM attitude ...
... Warren 21 Fairfield Union 8 after one ... the Warriors came out with guns blazing as Connor Barry drained a three ball on the first trip down court, AND trip #2 (6pts) ...6-3 sr. Chase Lupardus bullied his way to the rim on the left block ... 8-0 Warren ... FU got a midrange 12 footer from soph Mason Ailes (2pts) ... 6-3 Tyson Cochran came in off the WHS bench scoring in the paint 2pts ... Lupardus with an offensie board and stickback 2pts followed by a score going to his right for 2pt on the right block ... Fairfield got buckets from 6-4 fr. Asa Kline 2pts/ and 6-3 sr. Keagen Arnett on the block ... the only other FU points was from the FT line as soph Trevor Utzinger went 2/2 from the line ... Warren owned the quarter as Julian Stadelman ,the Warrior career scoring leader, added to his career total with a jumper inside the 3 point line 2pts and then a stepback trey 3pts ... 6-5 sr. Hayen Wells closed out the period with nice move on the baseline putting the ball off the glass 2pts ... Warren 21 Fairfield 8 after one ... coming out in the 2nd period Warren turned up the pressure on the perimeter while attacking the ball when FU put it down inside , the combo resulted in 7 FU turnovers which in basketball terms equated to 4 Warren Transition buckets/ 8pts ... the onslaught of the 2nd qtr. was led offensively by Mr. Stadelman's 12 points - 2 transition finishes at the rim wrapped around a midrange 2 pointer and topped off with a pair of deep 3 point baskets 12 pts in the qtr/15 for the half for the PG/SG record breaker ... Colin Anthony off the bench drained a trey on his first shot on goal, then picked up one of those 4 transition fgs/5 pts in the period for the 5-10 sr playmaker ... Lupardus got in on the defensive scoring picking up 2pts to give him 8 before halftime ... the Warren defensive attack held the Falcons to 1 fg in the 2nd period a midrange jumper by soph Mason Ailes ... Warren 40 Fairfield Union 10 after two quarters ... How do you "get back in the game" if you're FU? vs Warren the short answer is "you don't" ... but give credit to the FU team - they picked up the defensive intensity, played a very physical last 2 quarters ... the goal being to "muck up the game"... upping the tempo, attacking the ball everywhere on the court ... "mucking it up" - worked ... to a degree - Warren committed 9 turnovers in the last 2 quarters ... FU outscored the Warriors 20-14 in the 3rd quarter ... took 6 points off of the halftime deficit ... FU was led by soph. Trevor Utzinger's 5 pts in the qtr (a trey & floater in the paint) 5pts. ... Keaton Webb hit a 3 ball 3pts/Isaiah Delong scored in the paint and added a pair FTs 4pts / sr Jason Iser drilled a trey 3pts & the consistent Ailes added another 2 pter in the paint ... the Warriors put the ball in Stadelman's hands to keep FU chasing - the senior added 9 more points to his game total - a trey coming out of the locker room 3pts , took a pair of hard fouls by FU sending JS to the line on back to back trips down court ... the senior answered going 4/4 from the stripe ... Lupardus handled the physicality in the paint with a bucket down low and 1/2 from the free throw line 3 more points/11 on the game thru 3 ..... Connor Barry hit a rare 2 pointer inside the arc 2pts before Stadelman had a strip, steal and score giving him 4 pts in the frame/26 on the game ... Warren 54 Fairfield Union 30 after 3 ... both teams were deep into their benches as Warren played 12 deep and Coach Shaeffer got 10 in the game for the Falcons ... Fairfield got 14 fourth quarter points from the bench in the final 8 minutes (6-1 soph Dean Clark 6pts)/6-3 sr Hunter Clark 4 pts and 6-4 soph 4 pts all in the paint) ... for the game the FU underclassmen accounted for almost 70% of the FU scoring (33 of the 48 points) ... in the 4th Warren got 2 transition finishes by Stadelman (30 pts for the game) ... Colin Anthony had two hard drives to the rim & finish and an & 1 (5pts/10 for the game) .. Nick Cressey with a transition bucket & putback 4pts closed out the scoring on the night for Warren ...
