Chesapeake 49
Wheelersburg 45 final
... just as the great musical pieces from the past, this one started slow in the opening quarter and built to a crescendo of excellent spectator basketball coming down the stretch in the 4th quarter ... looking around the Convo it was good to see the familiar Purple of the Chesapeake Panthers & Coach Ater alongside the Orange & Black of the Wheelersburg Pirates & Coach Prater neither strangers to the Convo over the years ...
... the first points scored in the game weren't until the 5:36 mark of the opening quarter of "not much" action as Wheelersburg's Xavier Miller knocked down 2 FTs ... the Burg would score 2 fgs in the 1st period a three pointer by 6-0 sr. Xander Mowery 3pts and a midrange 15 footer from jr. Braylon Rucker ... 7 points in the first 8 minutes from the Pirates ... as painful as the scoring for the Pirates was to watch ...The Peake said "hold my $4.50 Convo OU souvenir cup & soft drink" ... the Panthers got a putback bucket from their talented 6-2 soph Maddox Kazee 2pts. , Kazee backed it up with a midrange jumper 2pts ... 6-5 jr Karson Frecka got the ball down low for a lefthand shot off the board for 2pts ... the drug sniffing dog on the opposite side of the Convo completed eating popcorn that had fallen out of the stands uninterrupted by what was taking place on the basketball court ... Wheelersburg 7 Chesapeake 6 after one ... getting used to being in the big game, a district final @ the Convo , it takes time - in this case the opening 8 minutes proved enough as both teams turned up the "basketball" in the 2nd ... the Pirates opened up a 6 pt lead ... 6-2 jr Landon McGraw dropped a deep 3 ball from the left wing 3pts ... Rucker drove down the left side of the lane finishing at the rim 2pts ...Kazee scored in the paint for the Panthers 2pts ... Xavier Miller with a bucket in transition for the Burg 2pts ... at 4:12 on the clock WHS 14 to the peake's 8 ... something in the water on the Chesapeake side? the Panthers came out looking more "loose" as Kazee drained a deep 3 ... 5-9 sr. guard Ethan Kerns for CHS followed up with a three on his ball 3pts ... Xavier Miller answered for the burg getting into the paint for 2pts ... Kazee showed why he will be a frontrunner for POY in the OVC next season as the soph guard/swing forward drained his 2nd triple of the period ... closing out the scoring Jack Doerr for Wheelersburg came in off the burg bench to hit a trey to close down the frenzied final 4 minutes of action in the 2nd quarter ... the players had settled in, no more jitters, no more "getting comfortable in the surroundings" - game on at the Convo ... Wheelersburg 19 Chesapeake 17 after 2 ... with each quarter the quality of play increased ... each game situation called for "the guy(s)" to step up - and they did ... Wheelersburg came out of intermission forging their biggest lead of the game 7 pts in the opening 4:48 of the 3rd quarter 30-23 ... Landon McGraw attacked the rim on a drive into the paint - fouled make/make ... Kazee for CHS answered with a drive, finish 2pts & 1 ... Xander Mowery hit a trey 3pts for the Pirates ... Drew Plantz drained a 3 for the Panthers to cut into the burg lead ... Hunter Bivens(WHS) hit a 3 from the left wing ... a Burg stop on D ... Bivens with another uncontested trey from just right of the top of the key 3pts ... 6-0 Bivens/Burg run ... 30-23 burg ... the rest of the quarter was all Peake as the Panthers closed out the quarter with their own 6-0 run as the 6-5 Frecka for the Panthers made it look easy in the paint taking a pair good entry passes in the paint and finishing on back to back possessions 4pts ... the 3rd period ended how it began for the Panthers with a Kazee bucket - 2pts ... great quarter of hoops by both teams ... Wheelersburg 30 Chesapeake 29 after 3 ... thru the opening 3 quarters the Peake was the chaser ... if you're a basketball fan at all, the 4th quarter was outstanding - you loved it ... the strategy courtside from the coaches & execution on the court by the players - outstanding ... both teams left it all on the court ... Braylon Rucker with the strip steal & score 2pts fouled , miss on the & 1... 32-29 burg ... Ethan Kerns drive miss/fouled make-make 32-31 ... Kerns with a strip/score 2pts ... 33-32 CHS ... 6-3 jr. Phillip Thacker had not even looked at the basket for 3 qtrs - looked and finished from 3 ft. 2pts ... peake 36-32 with 4:41 to play after Frecka was fouled going 1/2 from the line ... Rucker seemed unstoppable most of the game when he got going downhill to the rim - Rucker with the drive & finish 2pts ... 36-34... Thacker with an answer in the paint 2pts 38-34 Panthers 2:54 to play ... Miller for the Burg drained a three 38-37 peake ... Frecka fouled make/miss 39-37 CHS ...Kazee on a drive & score 2pts 41-37 ... Rucker driving left down the lane 2pts 41-39 ... Thacker fouled while shooting make/make 43-41 Panthers ... Rucker with the drive & score 2pts 43-43 ... peake with the ball in the front court full ... timeout 32.5 to play 43-43 all ... imo the play of the game...side out just past half court ...up to this point it was all Kerns/Kazee/Frecka and Thacker in the 4th quarter ... Coach Ater drew this one up in the sand ... 5-9 Kaden Perkins - 0 points through 3 qtrs ... in and out of the game due to foul trouble ... Perkins curled around the screens ... a perfect feed over the top , caught between the foul line and the rim ... left handed layup for 2 fouled & 1 ... shot good ... free throw good ... Peake up 46-43 ... Rucker again unstoppable as he drove the lane for 2 pts 46-45 ...16.6 to play ... peake fouled in the backcourt Kazee 1/2 ... 47-45 CHS ... defining moment in the game ... Rucker attacked the rim , Kerns for the peake takes the charge ... Peake ball ... foul ... make make ... the Panthers claw their way into the Regionals as the SE District D5 Champion ... Chesapeake 49 Wheelersburg 45 a final ...
