Eastern 71 Cardington Lincoln 55 ... EHS to the Elite 8

Post by pfloyd »

Eastern 71
Cardington 55 a final

... if you sit down and talk to Coach Leist the head coach for the Eastern Eagles, you will come around to his philosophy of the game and the keys to having a "good" basketball TEAM ... at the top of the list is DEFENSE , the expectation of EVERYONE who sees the floor being able to play D ... as they say, "Defense travels" , "Defense wins 'ships" ... proof is in the napkin stats : vs Cardington Lincoln the Eagles were out-rebounded in the opening half 14-10 by the Pirates ... in the 2nd half EHS turned that around especially on the defensive end as the Eagles won the battle on the boards for the game 26-21 limiting CHS to one and done down the stretch in the 4th period ... only 1 putback bucket for the Pirates who had "the big" 6-5 Brayden Lackey in the paint - held the big man to 4 fgs on the game ... solid perimeter D held CHS to 3/14 from beyond the 3 point line ... the Eastern defense turned the Pirates over 17 times in the game resulting in 16 Eagle points in transition for the night - DEFENSE ... Eastern 71 Cardington 55 a final ...

... 6-1 soph. Cade Leist got the Eagles flying with back to back buckets in the paint 4pts ... fellow soph Boston Webb got into the paint for 2 pts ... the floor leader on the team for EHS 5-10 sr Tucker Leist pulled up for a 15 footer 2pts and took a Cardington turnover to the house for 2pts ... Cardington did what is almost unheard of at ANY level of modern day hoops, the Pirates hit a pair of "midrange" jumpers in the first quarter (this was 2 of 11 midrange shots made by the Pirates in the game) ... sr. Warren Garrison & sr Kalin Briggs with back to back 12-15 ft. jumpers to start the Pirate scoring on the night 4pts ... 6-5 sr Brayden Lackey made it look easy scoring on the block with the decided height advantage 2pts & miss on the & one ... 5-11 sr. Briggs with a blow-by drive & score at the rim 2pts ... sr Sammy Jones off the bench got the ball down in the paint & a score 2pts ... 10-10 before Garrison lined up a college 3 ball to give Cardington the lead at the end of one ... Cardington 13 Eastern 10 after quarter number one ... after 4 minutes and change Cardington was getting comfortable as the Pirates jumped out to a 22-16 lead behind more midrange shooting - Garrison continued with another 15 foot jumper 2pts... sr AJ Brehm added his own 15-18 footer 2pts ... Sammy Jones kept the lead on the scoreboard as he hit a floater baseline 2pts before Garrison stepped back behind the 3 point line for a trey ... Eastern's Tucker Leist drove to the rim, fouled miss/make ... Leist scored on a dribble drive 2pts ... DeClan Davis attacked the rim , finished 2pts & 1 3pts to keep the Eagles within reach ... 22-16 CHS with 4:24 on the clock ... Eastern outscored the Pirates 14-4 to close out the quarter & take the lead into the locker room - defense kickstarted the Eagle surge as the Eastern D turned Cardington over 6 times in the final 4 minutes and 24 seconds of the 2nd ...6-3 jr Carson Peters off the bench got an offensive board, miss, fouled on the putback 2/2 from the line ... Leist the elder - drained back to back 15 footers 4pts ... a T Leist drive, fouled on the miss , make/make 2pts ... the only thing slowing down the Eagles was a foul at the defensive end that the 6-5 Lackey for CHS hit 2/2 from the FT line and an AJ Brehm 12 footer 2pts ... the final points in the quarter belonged to the Eagles defense & Boston Webb ... Webb scored a transition bucket after a CHS miscue ... Webb finished in the paint on the left block 2pts before finishing his 2nd transition bucket on a strip, steal & score 2pts ... the Eagles forced 7 Pirate turnovers in the qtr/11 in the half while taking care of the rock - only handing it over 4 times in the first 2 periods ... Eastern 30 Cardington Lincoln 26 after 2 ... the Eagles had come from 6 down to take the lead in the 2nd, solid defense running shooters off the line on the perimeter, keeping the Cardington size advantage from become a "go to " advantage in the paint by holding the CHS big man to 4 pts in the half ... if there was any area to address - rebounding was an issue as the Pirates held a 14-10 advantage on the boards - the offensive boards where it seemed CHS was getting 2nd & 3rd opportunities that IF the trend continued would be an issue in the final 2 quarters ... Cardington struck first coming out of the locker room as Warren Garrison scored in the paint off the board for 2pts ... AJ Brehm with his 3rd midrange jumper 2pts ... the Eagles Tucker Leist got down hill for 2 pts inside ... Leist added a pair of FTs 2pts ... when the quarter ended Eastern had picked up +2 on the napkin stat score sheet - Boston Webb hit a big time college three ball 3pts ... DeClan Davis went baseline for 2 ... CHS's Brehm added yet another 15 footer 2pts ... the 6-5 big man in middle for the Pirates - Brayden Lackey- grabbed an offensive board & stickback 2pts , Brehm was keeping Cardington within reach as he knocked down his 3rd 15-18 footer in the quarter 2pts ... DeClan Davis hit what imo was a backbreaking NBA three pointer for the Eagles ... Carson Peters fouled on a putback attempt in the paint make/miss ... at 2:56 in the quarter EHS held a 43-36 advantage ... Lackey with 2pts off the glass and Journey Willamson with 2 pts down low ended the period scoring ... Eastern 46 Cardington 40 after 3 ... intense pressure on the ball - led by 5-11, jr. Aiden Werner ... Werner kept turning his man on the perimeter, not allowing Cardington to take full advantage of their big man in the paint... defensive pressure takes a lot out of an opponent ... chasing on defense to double team - the same ... Eastern's Boston Webb hit a step back 3 to start the quarter... Cardington 's quick guard Kalin Briggs matched the EHS triple hitting a trey from the top of the key 3 pts and a midrange jumper 2pts ... Lackey followed with a bucket in the paint 2pts ... T Leist & Davis got back to back buckets down low on the blocks 4pts ... at 5:23 on the clock Eastern was up 53-47 ... Eastern took 30'ish seconds off the clock before a timeout 4:53 still 53-47 Eagles ... the Pirates put up 8 points in the final almost 5 minutes of clock - Brehm hitting 3 midrange jumpers 6pts in the qtr/16 on the game ... Williams added a steal & score 2pts ... got the Pirates to 55 ... not nearly enough, while the Pirates worked to get points Eastern was turning CHS over 4 more times in the period ... the Eagles pushed the ball after misses/ scoring in transition 5 times in the final minutes of action ... the Eagles ran the floor - scored the rock ... Tucker Leist finished the quarter with 6pts/24 in the game... Boston Webb 7pts in the qtr/18 for the game ... Cade Leist finished off an outstanding game on the boards and from the floor finishing with 6pts in the qtr 10 for the game ... Aiden Werner who played an outstanding defensive game got a steal and finish for 2pts & 2/2 from the line in the 4th ... defense turned into offense as the Eagles wore down the Pirates in the 4th putting up 25 points to earn a spot in the Elite 8 ... Eastern 71 Cardington 55 a final ...

Surprised Reedsville made it this far without Howie helping them. But kudos to whoever their coach is and keep it going boys. Racine faltered after dissing my man but you guys are continuing on it seems.

Wrong Eastern. Beaver Eastern actually beat Reedsville Eastern in the district quarterfinals.

I prefer the "almost champs" and Tom's butcher shop crew that talk Racine Southern and make their jokes.
The few Howie Caldwell groupies post more often and it's gotten a little played out.

However I do hear their guy grows the best maters around, so that's a good one lol
