Chesapeake 73 Martins Ferry 53 D5 Regional Semi-final

Post by pfloyd »

Chesapeake 73
Martins Ferry 53 a final

... the only thing I knew about Martins Ferry was that they came into the Regional Semi with a 13-11 record ...the MF scorekeeper said that they had a 6-6 "dude" who puts up 27 ppg ... without looking on MaxPreps at the 11 losses - a voice in my head was telling me that there were lots of holes in the armor for the Purple Riders and if there was a team that would find/exploit them it would be the Peake ... Lou Horvath who I was sitting beside at the scorers table said that the league that Martins Ferry came from historically is not a "physical" league hmmmm again advantage the Peake - the Panthers can put a body on you at both ends ... one BIG who does the damage on the boards and scoreboard ... not a physical team ... the opening quarter highlighted it all as the deductions played out along with "it looked like the Purple Riders struggled with on ball pressure" as CHS turned MF over 5 times in the 1st period ... the big damage for Chesapeake came from long range shots on goal - 6-3 jr. Phillip Thacker hitting a 15 footer, followed by a 3 ball from the top of the key 5pts ... soph Maddox Kazee drained a deep 3 from on Court Street 3pts ... jr big man 6-5 Karson Frecka put up 2 points vs the 6-6 Reese down in the paint ... sr. guard Ethan Kerns added a transition coast to coast bucket 2pts ... for the Purple Riders the 6-6 Reese with an offensive board & stickback 2pts ... the big man took an entry pass in the paint and finished with a one hand floater 2pts ... Gavin Little, 6-2 soph pg, scored 2 at the rim on a dribble drive ... Elijah Smith on a putback of a missed transition finish 2pts ... Chesapeake 20 Martins Ferry 8 after one ... Chesapeake showed in the opening quarter with a handful of scorers/all 5 starters denting the napkin stat scoring sheet - ALWAYS a good thing when the opposition has to guard everyone on the floor vs keying on one or two scorers ... for Martins Ferry the scouting report was "THE" big man in the middle ... Reese WAS the Purple Rider scoring in the 2nd as the Youngstown State football commit put up 12 points in the period - hitting a 15 footer from the wing, had 3 offensive boards putback for points - 6 ... scored off of entry passes into the paint 4pts ... a big quarter for the Big Man in the Middle BUT (and there is always a "but") the only other points in the quarter for the Purple Riders was 5-10 jr. Maurice Barnett's 2pt bucket on the blocks - still a good scoring period for Martins Ferry - 14 pts ... enter the Peake, scoring again coming from 5 players ... the defense turned MF over 3 more times (9 TOs in the half) ... led by the duo of 5-9 jr Kaden Perkins' 7 pts - 2/2 from the FT line/ his 3rd three ball of the game/ and a coast to coast transition bucket ... Maddox Kazee, the super sophomore, scoring 7 pts on his own ball - taking the ball down low in the paint for 2pts, a deep trey from the left wing to go with a finish in transition 2pt/7 in the qtr ... the key to getting W's is in the supporting cast - the guys who aren't marque' names BUT are every bit the oil that keeps the machine running - sr. Ethan Kerns, not flashy, not a big time scorer BUT definitely a player who given an opening/lax in the defense will make you pay ... Kerns with 2 buckets in the paint 4pts in the period ... Karson Frecka was assigned to guard the 6-6 BIG for MF - any inside scoring would be a bonus - Frecka for 2 in the paint ... off the bench sr. Drew Plantz scored on a blow-by drive for 2pts , separation points , keep the defense honest points AND the sr. brought court vision to the game as the 5-8 sixth man Plantz tallied 6 dimes/assists for the game ... the Chesapeake TEAM dropped their 2nd straight 20 point quarter putting up 22 points to the Ferry's 14 - separation ... Chesapeake 42 Martins Ferry 22 after 2 ... start from scratch in the 3rd , this time the Peake with a +20 pt handicap - gotta like the Panther chances to get the dub ... the Purple Riders came out of halftime with more physicality, more urgency on both ends ... jr. Maurice Barnett became a 2nd scoring option as he knocked down a pair of 3 pointers and took a Peake miscue to the rim for 2 pts/8 in the qtr ... Frecka and 6-3 jr Phillip Thacker "shutdown" Reese in the paint as the big man in the middle got but 4 pts in the 3rd - nothing in the paint as he had to step out to get a look at the rim - hitting a 15 footer 2pts and a make/make from the line ... 6-2 soph Gavin Little got his 2nd drive and score of the game 2pts and 6-3 Elijah Smith scored in transition 2pts - more players involved for MF, more points in the quarter on the board - 16 ... Coach Ater's Panthers had the 20 point cushion, all that was needed was to handle the increased defensive pressure and physical play - along with some trash talk by MF ... the Peake had answers for all of it as the Panthers responded with 15 points in the quarter ... Kazee quieted the trash talk with an "in your face" trey 3pts ... the talented soph hit on another triple and a pair of FTS /8 pts in the period ... Perkins handled the MF on ball pressure and added 4pts in the frame ... Thacker drained a deep trey 3pts ... the Martins' Ferry bus was warming up ... Chesapeake 57 Martins Ferry 38 after 3 ... you could see where MF was a .500'ish team - size/scoring with Reese and scorers on the perimeter who could get to the rim (although it took them 3 quarters to show up) as the Purple Riders put up 15 points in the 4th as more weapons showed themselves - Elijah Smith hit a pair threes/6 pts... 6-0 jr. Tev'N Smith who had been quiet for 3 qtrs hit a trey 3pts ... Reese did Reese things in the paint scoring down low 2pts then pulled down an offensive board & back up for 2pts ... Barnett showed blow-by speed with 2 at the rim ... another solid quarter ... not nearly enough - when the team on short side of the scoring column has to speed up the tempo of the game it usually turns into turnovers that become points going the other way - the Peake scored 7 fgs off of MF turnovers in the 4th quarter/ 14 points off of miscues with the parade to the rim led by Kaden Perkins 5 points/22 for the game ... Thacker 4pts/ Kerns with a transition putback 3pts in the qtr/ Kazee & Frecka each with a finish in transition at the rim ... 16 TEAM points in the Spinal Tap 11 level quarter - excellent , an opportunity to play for a Final Four spot - priceless ... Chesapeake 73 Martins Ferry 53 a final ...

Congrats to Coach Ater & Chesapeake. Expect them back in this position next year. Kazee/Perkins/Frecca/Thacker all return. All great players.

Another great write up Pfloyd. I knew this team was special as I watched them during the summer and preseason scrimmages and all season. Great group of teens. I watched on the big screen as I am still recovering from pneumonia. Definitely will be watching tomorrow to cheer on The Peake.

It was about as entertaining as a night with 2 20 point games could’ve been. Martins Ferry and Garaway both competed hard, but just didn’t stack up to Chesapeake and Minford.

This made for a very fun night for fans from the SE District.
