... going into this one - South Webster had already beaten Notre Dame 53-37 during the regular season ... ND wasn't going to hang with the Jeeps if they couldn't control the tempo of the game ... the game would need to be in the 40's or less to give the Titans a chance ... the ND defense had to do what it has done all season hold SW to at or below the ND season avg 40ppg ... this was not a stretch for the Titans as their offense IS disciplined, works the ball to find the best shots - long offensive possessions - do what they do, only better ... South Webster KNOWING what and how Notre Dame plays needed to NOT let them control the tempo ... push the ball, up tempo, score the ball - get the lead so SW was the team controlling the tempo ... all well and good until YOU (SW) shoot 25% from the floor in the 1st period only 2 fgs to your name while ND works the clock, and the possessions while finishing possessions with points- 5/8 fgs for 62.5% to start the game ... great opening quarter by the Titans - the players did EVERYTHING in the game plan - executed to perfection ... tempo , discipline, defense taking away open looks, not letting SW to the rim, no second chance shots for SW - it always helps if your opponent can't hit the ocean ... the Jeeps got a pair of three pointers from Dylan Shupert 6pts ... Hunter Barnard with a drive - fouled - make/make at the line 2pts - the end of the SW offense as the Jeeps came up empty with 6 other shots on goal ... Notre Dame followed suit and found the going easy from behind the 3 point line as Myles Phillips splashed a pair of treys - 6pts ... 6-0 sr post player Brady Davis scored in the paint - 2pts - along with a transition finish & 1 - 3pts ... sr PG Landon Barbarits drained the Titans 3rd three pointer of the quarter ... long, methodical possessions for ND with 5 of 8 trips down court resulting in points being rung up on the scoreboard - nothing fancy, just solid half court basketball that put up points while limiting the number of possession for the Jeeps & field attempts - good offense to go with sound defense at the other end of the floor equals the lead ... Notre Dame 14 South Webster 8 after 1 ... 9 to 5 ... No, not the Dolly Parton song ... this ended up the scoring by both teams in the 2nd quarter as South Webster struggled from the floor - only knocking down a pair of fgs - Hunter Barnard getting into the paint for 2 pts ... the Jeeps used multiple combinations on the court to try to find a combination that ended with someone being able to "break the code" - off the SW bench Brycin McClintic got one of the 7 Jeep offensive boards in the half ... a stickback bucket for the 6-1 jr ... the Jeeps went 2 of 11 from the floor in the 2nd period - 18.2% - 5 points ... 4/19 in the opening 2 quarters & 21% - 13 points in the half ... the Titans of Coach Mader kept on keeping on - running the deliberate offensive sets, making the extra pass, getting into the paint - in the 2nd period Landon Barbarits with a drive and score - fouled - miss on the & 1 ... the 5-10 sr. worked his way into the paint for a 5 footer & 1 - 3pts ... 6-0 "post player" Brady Davis with a solid first 2 quarters of action at both ends being the focal point in the high post- setting picks/distributing the ball - backed himself down low with the ball & scored on the block 2pts ... frustration was setting in on the SW players as Davis again was able to get down on the blocks with the ball - fouled - make/make from the line ... the Titans came away with 9 points in the quarter - rewarded for their patience, discipline and solid D - extending their lead going into the locker room at the half ... Notre Dame 23 South Webster 13 after 2 ...Notre Dame holding South Webster to or maybe South Webster holding South Webster to 4 fgs total in the first 2 quarters ... not sure anyone but the ND coaching staff had that number in mind ... Coach Persin has over 800 wins in his legendary career, Coach Fenton had got it done on the basketball court long before he moved courtside BOTH knew the key to getting back in the game - make a shot ... yep, you can talk - speed up the tempo, you can talk more pressure on the defensive side ... the SW defense gave up but 23 point in the half - good on any other game night - the issue for the Jeeps, literally NO ONE was scoring the ball, from courtside it didn't even look like anyone wanted to be the one to put the ball up to add to more frustration with another miss ... shooters shoot ... the name of the game is to put the ball thru the 18 inches in diameter metal rim more than your opponent - in the opening 2 quarters THAT didn't happen ... Notre Dame had to know that the Jeeps would be trying to "up the tempo" - pressure on the ball, push everything - makes/misses ... and South Webster did - sr. PG Christian White got down hill toward the rim - fouled - miss/make ... 5-11 sr. off guard Owen Mault may have hit the biggest shot of the game as the lanky guard - who didn't even look at the rim the entire first half - on the left wing, didn't hesitate and hit the toughest shot in basketball - a wide open, uncontested three - nothing but net ... you could hear the collective exhale of the SW faithful as the ball was center cut - 3 pts ... the crowd was louder, the Jeep players responded by turning the Titans over 4 times in the quarter ... now that it was confirmed that "there was in fact NO lid on the basket" the Jeeps settled in as Dylan Shupert hit a trey on top of the Mault three ... the Padre may have been on the ND bench but when the Jeeps 6-8 sr Eli Roberts drained SW's 3rd straight triple from uptown on Court Street to tie the game at 23-23 there was an "amen" heard in the Round House on Richland from the Jeeps side ... 10-0 run with 5:36 remaining in the 3rd ... game on ... the Notre Dame contingent regrouped as both teams slugged it out the rest of the quarter ... Notre Dame answered with Brady Davis again able to back down into the paint - fouled - 2/2 from the line to stop the SW run ... Landon Barbarits continued to be able to get to the rim on the dribble from outside the paint - 2 pts at the rim ... Kenady McGraw hit a 15 footer to right the ship and keep pace with the SW rejuvenated offense as SW's Shupert scored in the paint 2pts ... Roberts took a hard foul at the rim - make/make ... Beau Stephens who got the start over Mault hit a 12-15 footer off of the right elbow ... South Webster 29 Notre Dame 29 after 3 ... 8 minutes until the Final Four ... 14-18 year "kids" trying to get to their dream, live out their parents' want for them ... it looked like the Jeeps momentum built in getting back into the game was going to get them to the finish line as Owen Mault hit another big time shot - a 12 footer for 2pts ... Eli Roberts got loose with a tough reverse finish at the rim for 2pts AND 1 ... a 5 pt run by SW ... defensively forcing turnovers by ND - 5 miscues in the final period/9 in the 2nd half ... holding the Titans scoreless through 4:28 on the clock ... 34-29 Jeeps ... before the game started the odds makers had SW winning going away +15 or better ... seniors ... in the post season not only is the game on the line every time out, but high school basketball CAREERS are on the line ... finality ... no more team once the buzzer sounds IF you are on the short end on the scoreboard ... Landon Barbarits took things into his own hands ... dribble drive as he had done earlier in the game, a finish at the rim and fouled ... 2pt and a make on the & 1 ... a Jeeps miss at the rim ... still a chance ... Barbarits with a drive and finish 2pts ... 34-34 ... Roberts on a drive and finish for 2 ... 36-34 South Webster with 1:56 to play ... plenty of time to get a tie , get a W ... the Titans held the ball until 15.5 on the clock ... making it clear that they were going for the win or the tie and not allow the Jeeps another possession ... as a fan sitting courtside I thought - the bread and butter ALL game has been Barbarits on the drive - 4 for 4 with 3 of the 4 ending in finishes and fouls ... 2 of which were converted to 3 pt plays ... none of that happened as the South Webster defense if nothing else turned the ball away, forced it to the perimeter with the Titans getting but an off balanced, after the buzzer shot at the rim from 3 ... survive and advance ... no glamour points ... the first Final Four appearance for the Jeeps since 2006 ... South Webster 36 Notre Dame 34 a final ...

One of the most boring games and worst I've ever seen for a regional championship i think each team shot around 20% it was bad and nd holding the ball for the last shot with 40 seconds left is mind boggling to me

It is okay to give credit to other teams and players when they do well. It's not always because SW was "sleepwalking" or shot poorly. Often, the other team has something to do with that.

This ND team was experienced, savvy, and tough both physically and mentally. They gave up 30,30,31,and 36 in this tournament run. People can call it ugly basketball, but they guard and make you earn baskets and do what they have to, to win. They haven't averaged over 18 wins a season the past 4 years by accident or by playing bad basketball. Kudos to the Titans.

I 100% agree with your statement. Give ND credit, they came out with a gameplan and executed it. Yes, SW missed shots but you have to give ND some credit for causing those missed shots. After reading Coach Persin's comments after the game it was because SW shot the ball poorly, not because of ND defense. As far as ugly basketball, that is how ND has played the last 3 years. Not ugly, but control the tempo, grind it out and play good defense. Coach Mader does a great job of finding what works for his team especially against superior teams but one thing about coach mader mader is that his teams will play defense. I do wish the Barbarits kid had the ball in his hands at the end of the game instead of taking it out of his hands for a backdoor cut. Congrats to SW, it's not easy to get to the final 4.

SW held an athletic advantage at every position. To a man, this shouldn't have been a game, but was for a few reasons. Yeah, someone was out coached and it wasn't ND. Norm doesn't do anything different offensively. Good ole 5 out motion offense. Will be ok most of the time when you have the better athletes. Very few if any designed sets for key buckets. Best player on the floor who just stands in the corner for minutes on end. Yep. The fruits of 800 plus career wins...

lol notre dame was at least 15 point underdog. They had the chance to hold for a final shot and chance to win. for being severely out talented in every position almost i’d say they would take the chance for a win every time

100% Agree, If they would've tried to run with the Jeeps on that bigger floor they would've got ran off the floor. Got give Coach Mader and the Titans credit where credit is due they came up with a game plan that gave them a chance to win game and executed it. They played good zone defense and did a great job of not allowing the Jeeps to get the rim.

ND did not hold the ball for 2 minutes. The kid from SW took an awful lay up, ND came down and held the ball for about 45 seconds or so.
