Rooting for Jackson, I've definately been on the wrong side of some slowouts of late....but have no problem with a coach starting his players in the 4th up around 30 as long as they had been subbing a good bit throughout the game and they are pulled a couple of minutes in. It's a fine line and VC is still considered a fairly young team. I would play the starters about 20-25 minutes in a game of such.

Now if they were up 30 to start the 4th and they stayed in till 4:00 or less left....I'd be upset as well.

What is the thinking behind roping off 3/4 of one side of the seating for "students", "pep band" , etc....I think Vinton County should place all our seats for Viking fans only and make the Wellston folks sit on top of each other as they seem content to do to other visiting schools. I also heard Bob Willis comment that Wellston outplayed or at least kept up with the Vikings in the second half...what kind of logic is being used here? The radio guys commented that at least Wellston was keeping the deficit at or around 30 points !

i know i am not a vc fan or a wellston fan but i would like to comment. vc is in a no win situation when it comes to playing into the 4th quarter. they normally do not need to play their starters then but then the worry comes that when they do will they be ready to play hard for 32 minutes. i for 1 would like to see a tvc team, any team, go far in the tourney. i think it spreads pride on everyone. at the same time killing a team unable to play back is ugly. do not know the answer.

Hawkeyepierce......Nice seeing you again tonight. I never did see Todd Compston there, though, although I did see Red. I'll post my stats from this contest in a bit if it helps you out.

bucknut33,

How "dissappointed" would you be if you were a VC starter and routinely only got to play 20-22 minutes a night because your team was up by 30 points so much. Like someone else said, a coach has to find some a few extra minutes for these players somewhere. With that being said, the VC starters played between 1 and 2 minutes at the beginning of the 4th, played a 2-3 zone, and never pressed. Also, VC could not sub much throughout the first 3 quarters, because 4 of VC players had only one quarter of eligibility since they played the JV game. Vinton County in no way ran the score up tonight.

VC Hoops is absolutely right. Take Dustin Guthrie for example; here is a kid that has worked his tail off, day in and day out. Is he to be relegated to 15-20 minutes a game? It is certainly not his fault that he playing on good team and that team is winning team.

Coach Combs and his staff are very aware how much players play and has a great sense of game management and the responsible ethics that comes during the heat of competition. Anyone to question otherwise is either ignorant or just plain wrong.

And a wise man told me once, "Make no apology for winning." Coach Combs and the Vikings play hard, they compete, they do with class and they are not saying sorry.

Vinton County-Wellston

Post by scooper »

Gosh I hope Wellston didn't press Vinton County in the second half, the might have cut into the Vikings lead a couple of points against those poor junior varsity players. Meigs did it last week, and I thought the world was coming to an end.

I want to give a "holler" out to the VC student section!
You see, when a Wellston player hit a three, popcorn went to 25 cents a bag for the next three minutes. On the second three made by Wellston, the entire student section charged to the concession stand to get their popcorn  You guys may be small in numbers at times, but you make up for it by being inventive :-D
THANKS!!

The was classic. About 25 VC kids ALL got up and headed to the concession stand. The PA annoucer turned around and looked like he was gonna poop his pants. I'm sure the folks making the popcorn were none too happy.

By halftime in last nights game VC had played Dustin Guthrie, Eberts, Stewie, Prater, Grillo, Allen, Beaty, Dyl Guthrie and Dixon for sure. Not sure but I think there were 1 or 2 more guys who saw PT before the half. My point is this is why you saw starters in the 4th, Everyone played early and often. Again Combs shows some class cause this one couldve gotten real ugly.
