Waverly @ Chillicothe 2-5
Waverly @ Chillicothe 2-5
i dont know much about waverly other than they have quite a few close losses. people i work with from waverly, tell me waverly has no ball handlers. if this is true, chilli's defense will eat them alive. any views on this match-up?
They typically have pretty good athletes (not necessarily basketball players) ....they are struggling this year...but have potential and seem to be playing better.
All this being said...Chilly by 40 or more if they want. If Chilly didn't care much and Waverly played great....it would still be a 20 point game.

bronc21,
My Waverly connections have keep me up to date all year. Waverly is a confusing team this year. They do have talent, but it has not translasted into wins. They lost 4 plus games early either in OT or on buzzer beaters. That has continued. They then went on a nice three game win streak, but that feel apart when Wheelersburg gave them an ole fashioned butt kicking. After rebounding and avenging a early seasn loss to Minford (who lost to Jackson) on Tuesday, they turned around and lost last night to Portsmouth West.
Tigers are lead by football standout Trevor Walls in the middle. They have a stud freshman in Harrison Martin who has been averaging a strong 15 plus points and double digit boards in the 2nd half of the year. Those two will man the middle.
The Tigers shortcomings seem to be in ball handling and the ability to knock down the outside shot. Cavs cannot take them lightly as they are strong and athletic. Both Ramone Conley and Dereck Roeback are excellent football players who can hoop as well. Trevor Arnett is their 3-ball specialist, but has not been scoring much as of late.
I believe with it being Senior Night, the 3 headed monster of Hitchens, Chambers and Beverly will get feed plenty often. Also, I would expect to see alot of Mike Newman (if knee is ok) and Nathan Woodworth.
If we create havoc and lock down in the post on the Tigers, we should be fine. We are scoring 75 plus per game while giving up 45 plus. My guess is Waverly is only scoring at 50 per game with Walls and Martin scoring 30 pts plus between them.
GO CAVS!!!

Man, what a brutal end of the year schedule for the Tigers of Waverly. Huntington Ross tonight, Chillicothe on Tuesday, and then finish with Oak Hill on the 8th.
Wheelersburgs defense shut them down and held them to 36 points and 9 of those came in the last minute from the subs hitting three straight 3pt shots. Waverly had no one that could hit the outside shot and they took Walls right out of his game and he was the only one in double figures at 11 points. I'd say the Cavs defense will hold them to less than 40 points as well.
A potential three straight losses and two of those could be blowouts to the Ross county teams. I say good luck to a fellow SOCII school because you are definitely going to need it.

Another tough loss for the Tigers last night. Looks like they did not follow the game plan and try and take the Kellough boys away. Surprised to read in the Gazette that the Huntsmen pounded the Tigers on the boards.
Could Waverly be packing it in all ready? I know Huntington is very good, but with Walls, Martin and Roeback on the front line, I thought they would own the boards.
Also, keep in mind Tuesday is Senior night. Three of our starters are seniors. I don't see Coach pulling them until sometime in the 4th. That is only fair to the kids. If we do get a lead, he will substitute throughout (as he has been doing). However, Beverly, Chambers, Hitchens, Newman and Woodworth should each get to play as long as they want and then each get a great ovation.
Cavs need to keep the focus, keep the pressure on and get that next W. One game at a time,
GO CAVS!!!

Waverly is best described as "under acheivers". On paper this team should be able to play with anyone in the area, but for whatever reason they seem to loose their steem when they are down. Chilly should beat this team pretty handily but I wouldnt be surprised to see the Tigers "hang" with the Cavs either. Depends what team shows up. Good luck to both.

bluegrassvike,
"Underacheivers" is a term I would have used, but didn't since I know some of these kids parents. However, you said it and are probably correct. I am not so sure it is the kids, but possible the combination of a new coaching staff and some young kids. They still scare me, and I believe if they can score and not turn the ball over, they should beat Unioto and will give Greenfield some butterflies. GM does not score that much (or give up much), but that in itself makes the game closer.
My hope is the Cavs get into the 70-80 range and force the Tigers to try and keep up. That is when I think we may blow the door off. If we go slow with them anything can happen.
GO CAVS!!!
hitch, if they struggle with ballhandling the way i have heard and obviously you have too, a quarter or two of pressing from the cavs may get us to the 70-80 pt range rather quickly. definately dont wanna let them get set in their offense and work it down to Walls b/c he's a nice player very capable of scoring down low but from what i've heard he's even having to bring the ball up the floor for them.
and thats just how it is...Dshanton3

WOW...what a difference a year makes! Last year, the Tigers SHOCKED the SOC by upsetting the Burg and sharing the league title. They were called "over-achievers" all year long and on this forum they got pounded ---right up to their tournament loss to Dante and the Greenfield Tigers.
Now suddenly---they are "under achievers"???
'On paper' the Tigers are a basketball team full of kids who aren't primarily basketball players. They are good kids and good students in the classroom (remarkable team GPA)
They ARE "athletic" and they win games when they are able to make MOST of their free throws, minimize their turnovers, and play well on defense. But...there's not much margin for error!!! They aren't going to out shoot or out score many teams.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the way you're using the term (underachievers). To me, the term usually refers to a team that is full of players skilled in that sport who don't fulfill their destiny (...the Patriots immediately come to mind)
Or..perhaps if the Cavs, loaded with so much future D-1 BASKETBALL talent, don't make the EXPECTED deep tournament run...then we would say they have "under-achieved."
If your comment refers to a lack of effort on the part of the players---
How many games have you seen the Tigers play this year?

I think the word "expected" kind of sums up my coment. In no way am I taking a shot at Waverlys team or kids. The reason I even said this was because what was coming from fans early in the season and last years success. I truley thought the Tigers would contend for another league title this year due to their size athletic ability and performance last year. So I think based on "expectations" this team has underachieved this year. if I offended anyone with this statement it was not the purpose.
