Im guessing ringo pulls for a team that never wins their league and struggles to go .500 in the regular season. It seems like these are the types of people that constantly bash the TVC teams. Belpre had an excellent year and ran into a good Zane Trace team. It's not like Belpre didn't play a good non league schedule, so I guess that age old argument doesn't always hold water. As far as VC goes you would have a hard time finding anyone who has had as much regular season success as they have. I don't think that they have to win district championships all the time to prove they have a good program. How many district championships has Warren won over the last decade from teh mighty SEOAL? Fact is when you pile so many quality teams into one D2 sectional, there are going to be good teams lose. Just look at Logan Elm this year....AThens a coule of years ago when they were 19-1.....etc....Heck, the last couple of years, you had two teams with 16 plus wins playing in the sectional. Now I saw Belpre play a few times this year, and I thought they were really good. I was a little surprised to see them get beat by Zane Trace but not shocked. I saw VC play twice this year, including their sectional game. I got to be honest: they are just not that great this year. They must have over achieved some to accomplish what they did in the regular season. But in the past, they have been a legitimate team in the district. I think theyve played in 3 district championship games just in the last few years, winning the district when they had the Guthrie boy. I don't have the exact stats (maybe one of the VC historians could help me out) but they seem to compete quite well against D2 competion in the regular season and post season. I don't remember ever watching them in a tournament game and thinking that they got beat by a worse team.

This seems to me to be the typical....I can't find anything to brag about on my team, so I'll criticize other programs whose success Im jealous of. Cmon Ringo.

Not a big surprise to me that FH, Belpre, and VC were all bounced in the first round. When you look at the Lancers and Eagles, they are both forced to play 12 conference games against D4 opponents. They also play 2 games vs. Wahama (small school, not sure of enrollment), giving them a chance to play 6 games against teams of similar size, with 2 of those games coming against each other. The fact that a team can only play 4 non conference games is mind boggling and throws common sense out the window. The TVC Hocking is out of control in terms of size, and the division split can't come soon enough. But then again I also have major problems with the way the Hocking was split, which is worthy of another thread unto itself. The point concerning FH and Belpre is that they have 4 games to play other D3 schools that they could encounter come tournament time. For FH the annual rivalry with Alexander must be kept, you through the N-Y game into the mix, and you've got 2 games that can be devoted to playing non-TVC, Division 3 schools that will prepare you for teams like Southeastern, Zane Trace, etc.

Most consider the Athens upset against Logan Elm to be a major head scratcher, but when you look at their non-conference schedule it really isn't. Athens played Dublin Scioto, Warren, Jackson, Waverly, Marietta, Logan, all teams that they could encounter of similar size and quality. Meanwhile, VC was busy beating up on teams like River Valley and Paint Valley, and were also busy losing to smaller schools like Southeastern, Piketon, and Huntington.

Strength of Schedule is everything in sports, and until TVC teams start getting brave like Athens, we will continue to see the best of the TVC lose to average teams in their respective leagues.

How's that bravery helped Athens over the years? Isn't this the first time they've even won a sectional in forever. Theyve played a tough schedule for many years. I'm not bashing Athens, I'm only saying that strength of schedule can be over rated sometimes. It's everyones ready made excuse anytime a TVC team loses.

It just goes to show their is no perfect science to all this ... Athens goes 19-1, played a pretty tough schedule along the way and losses to a good Warren team in the sectionals ... Athens goes 11-9 plays a pretty tough schedule along the way and beats the No. 2 seed to reach the Convo.

You just never know - and to sit here and think we all have it figured out is totally ridiculous ... lol

We're talking about HIGH SCHOOL KIDS - not professionals ... Some nights they play great, some nights they don't ... I've seen Belpre play a few times this season - and last nights game was by far their worst game of the season ... guess what, it came at tourney time and their bounced - just like that.

It happenes in ALL THE DIVISIONS, TO ALL SCHOOLS, TO EVERY COACH, TO EVERY TEAM ... Which in turn makes it impossible to judge or make sense out of any of it ... Best thing to do is sit back and enjoy!

Love the back an forth banter, but zeb don't see how u conclude that strength of schedule is overrated. We at Latham Western played one of the toughest out of conference sched this year that we have played in a few years, and though we got beat handily in those games, I know that our team benefitted. For a small division 4 school playing d3 teams in tougher conferences will pay dividends in the future, we are young, and the flow of the games will b the tempo that these young kids will face when tourney comes around an they play d4teams in tougher conferences. With that being said like bulldog said these high school kids will sometimes play great all season, and for some reason have a bad game come tourney time. Doesn't relate at all to whether they played tough out of conference or not, it's just going to happen sometimes.

indiansfan,
You have to realize that most of these people (like fred sanford), live their entire lives inside a 40 mile radius and have no clue what goes on in the rest of the state. These people ACTUALLY BELIEVE that their teams are that good. Just like zeb on here ranting about VC. he says they must have overachieved this year. NO, they just play a weak D3 schedule every single year, thus the 17 or 18 wins every year. It really is funny to hear them rant about this stuff!

Fred G. Sanford realizes johnny ringo couldn't play the game so he loves to talk about a conference he wasn't good enough to play in.

johnny ringo your logic on Vinton Co. really doesn't make any sense. I could single out any team with that same logic and make them look bad. Warren is a good team that does well in the regular season but by your logic they have failed. By your logic all those great McClain teams failed. How many times was Vinton Co. the higher seed in the games they lost?

So i guess the total went under with 5 teams winning sectionals? I really thought Waterford would beat Symmes, Athens wouldnt beat LE, and Belpre would beat Zane Trace to give the TVC 6 teams.

The over/under was 6 ... five made it in ... Athens, Nelsonville-York, Athens, Southern and South Gallia ... Federal Hocking lost by a point, Waterford lost by a point - the TVC was a basket or two from reaching the over.

As an SVC guy, it's crazy to think that one of our league champion and the league champs from the TVC didn't make it to the Convo. Here's to a good showing by each of our 5 teams who did advance(I know Athens already played, but they made a solid showing for their future last night, IMO)

I agree, Dana. Looks like this Zeb guy loves to root for big fish in little ponds. I've read a few of his posts on this thread and others. He basically stated that if Ohio State were in the MAC it would be OK. Probably thinks Boise State needs to soften their non league schedule. I bet he likes Tiger Woods, the Cowboys and UK basketball, too. Seems like a bit of a frontrunner.

Hey sid! One for three aint bad! I wouldn't watch golf if it were the last sport left on earth, am an avid Bengals fan (not sure how this makes me a "frontrunner") but I do like UK basketball. I'm not biased toward the big schools, I'm just tired of hearing the small schools cry! Either find a way to compete (aka Adena) or find another league.
