A little side not for Friday's game ... I've had Chesser & Courts at the top of the TVC-Ohio P.O.Y list ... Its a tough call IMO - one player is a senior on the team leading the league - the other has been the most consistent scorer all season ... If one plays better than the other, I could see it 'tip the scale' in terms of who takes home the hardware this year.

VC will win this one, just as they did the first game. Wellston loses their composure and sportsmanship when they are down. Chesser is a better athlete than Courts and is a more valuable asset to his team. My vote goes to Ryan!!! Vinton Counties defense will win this game for them!!!

IMO - Being the better athlete and a more valuable asset to your team does not make you POY. The best overall basketball player in the league should get POY(even if that person is a freshman and his school finishes last in their respective league).

Its up for debate on what qualifies an individual to recieve the P.O.Y honors ... Last season, Jack Hart might not have been the 'best basketball player' in the Ohio Division - but he did so much defensively - he actually walked away with the award. (and he played on a team that didn't even win the league none-the-less.)

As POY for the TVC OHIO goes; that's a tuff one.
Without Courts, Wellston would be very weak like Meigs.
The Vikings need Chesser to be good, but would be a better team without Ryan than Wellston would be without Nigel.
Tuff choice all the way around, but a player from the conference champs usually gets the nod.
Who ever gets the trophy will be deserving. A lot of equal players in the conference this season.
[sDON'T BE SURPRISED TO SEE JORDAN KIDD, BRYCE OWINGS, AND L B REMY GET SOME ATTENTION Could be one of these 3 next season.

I agree.
Both are good players and good kids but without Chesser, VC would still wins games. Maybe not as many but they would still win.
Not sure how many Wellston wins without Courts.

Sometimes its not how you do over the course of a season - but how well you do VERSUS TVC-OHIO opponents that earns the award for P.O.Y.

Its going to be hard to argue against Courts - his league stats are through the roof.

Top scoring performance in the Ohio Division in any game (league or non-league) this year: Courts - 34 points vs Meigs

Other league games for Courts:

26 points vs Alexander
25 points vs Nelsonville-York
25 points vs Meigs (2nd game)
20 points vs Vinton County
20 points vs Alexander (2nd game)
19 points vs Nelsonville-York (2nd game)
19 points vs Athens

Non-league scoring for Courts:

19 points vs St. joe
19 points vs O.V.C
18 points vs New Boston
18 points vs Rock Hill
17 points vs Huntington

* Those league games scoring totals are really impressive - it might be enough to put Courts over the top ... It reminds me of a few years back in football when Nelsonville-York & Athens split the TVC-Ohio title and the Buckeyes had arguably one of the best tail-backs in all of Southeastern Ohio (Derek Arnold) ... But Jeremy Smith, the tail-back for Meigs, ended up winning offensive M.V.P because his stats were better 'inside of league play.'

YEAH I am bias in this for Ryan, but Nigel Courts is the one that has done it night in-night out over the entire season.
Could be second straight year POY came from non-championship team in the TVC ohio.
I will be in attendance tomorrow night rootin on the Vikes. Also to admire the Rocket's new floor which honors a great basketball man. I was born in Wellston went to school there 2 years at Central
and I still have roots there (mother's family), but grew up and went to school in Vinton County and proud of it.

The POY should be based on way more than points. Player of the year should be best all around player both ends of the floor. We see players that aren't on very good teams put up huge numbers while players on better teams don't get to come down and fire it up as much. The point thing also has a lot to do with the coaches some coaches leave their star players in when games are way out of hand to build their point average up. While other coaches star players don't see the court in these games. I guess that is why it is better that the coaches do the voting, they actually see the situation. But a players own coach has to like them to get them nominated for it. I have seen coaches not nominate their best player before. So it is probably always going to be a controversy.

I agree Fred, points should not be the only factor. Overall team play, sportsmanship and hustle should definitely factor in. I see so many kids that are really good players display poor sportsmanship on a regular basis. That is a thumbs down in my opinion.

That is definitly not Courts ... He earned my respect down at Southern when the Golden Rockets and Tornadoes both had players 'blow their tops' throughout the game ... It was about of ugly of game that I have seen in years ... Technicals, shoving, throwing the ball at players, fans yelling at one another ... etc... etc... And although Courts was held under double figures, banged around & double teamed all night - he still never waivered or lost his cool like a lot of other players did. He kept his head down and played hard from start to finish.

I have absolutly no ties to either team, never met any of the kids really and have never talked to Courts or Chesser in person ... I like both players and had Chesser as the front runner for most of the season - but Courts has gained a lot of gorund on him over the second half of the season ... Like I said before - it may just come down to whatever happens tomorrow night ...

Was not referring to Nigel, just making a statement about some of the kids I have seen play this year. I have traveled all over SE Ohio this year and seen alot of high school basketball. There are some really talented players around here, but, have poor attitudes and let it show. Just stating that POY should not be be offensive or defensive only. Should be the overall package regardless of who you play for.

Imo the overall most consistent Viking this season has been Brice Owings. Withought a doubt he has been the 'winning edge' in more Viking victories than any other one player.

Looking forward to a great game tomorrow night and seeing the new gymnasium. Hopefully the Vikes play on both ends of the court, the same way they did in the first meeting this year. Go Vikings, take the TVC title outright!! Vikings by 12

That young man can play and jump with boys 6 inches taller than him. Have seen him take alot of rebounds this year from boys much taller than he is.

Question for Hawkeye & Ty Webb:

Will you guys hate me and not ask me to do the Vikings Roundball Podcast anymore if I come down to Wellston tomorrow and cheer on the Golden Rockets?

I really need the Vikes to stub their toe here to open the door for Athens to possibly win a league title ... lol ... I promise I'll be up in Logan cheering on the Vikes here a few weeks - I just need you to lose Friday - that's all I'm asking.

It doesn't seem like a whole lot ya know ... You will still be league champs - just co-champs!

I agree with what you are saying here. But the league usually picks the player by scoring ability; especially if that player carries his/her team. Ryan Chesser is the best all-around player in the TVC OHIO this season, he can score, he can handle the ball up top if needed, he can get up for a board as well as any, better than most, player his size, he can play in the clutch, and he plays good defense. Also Bryce Owings is the best 5'9" rebounder you will ever see. He has a great knack for knowing where the ball will be after a missed bucket on both ends of the court. All top 7 players for Vinton County has contributed well in every game this season; great team play.
Well I will be at the game, looking forward to seeing the new floor. Watch 93Bulldog cry in his popcorn. I'll be at the midcourt stripe on visitors side on the

FRONT ROW

As far a the POY hype, VC's leading scorer this year is Jordan Kidd not Ryan Chesser. They're both great young men, as is Brice; and all of them have contributed to VC having a great year. But Court's stats for Wellston are extremely solid and I'd consider him the front runner.
