SVC 2008/2009

Post by mikepike »

With the season done (except for the various All-Star games) now is the time to start looking ahead towards next season and begin all of the talk about who has got what returning, who's playing who, and so on.

As a Red Streak fan, I'm looking forward to what the Streaks have returning: 4 starters- Smith (All-District), Brabson (All-District), Southworth, and Legg (All-SVC HM); non-starters in Brush (6'5 Soph.), Miller, K. Helton. Add to the mix a couple from the freshman team in J. Helton and J. Vulgamore, and I think you have a very solid nucleus. The keys for the off season, as I see them, are:

-working on increasing overall strength and stamina;
-finishing in the paint;
-free throw shooting;
-ball handling.

Now, I am no expert by any means, just my observations from this past season. I think the Streaks can have a very good season next year if things fall into place, but it won't happen by accident. Success comes with a price, and that is hard work, effort, and a focus on the team and team alone- no prima donnas.

How does the rest of the league stack up?

The Adena Warriors return 3 starters in Clay Roll, Buddy Barnes and Logan Houserman. Along with Zach Skaggs, Eamon Boyle and Chris Welch. The only thing the Warriors are missing is a true PG. Which is the most important position on the court. If we can establish a true PG we have the other positions covered, and could make a run at winning it all next year. Roll might be the man that has to step in and run the point. He is my pick for POY next year. He can handle the ball, and has great court vision. Plus is a svoring threat from everywhere on the court. Add in the other guys to compliment him and AHS could be dangerous!

Sports- I've heard similar things, but not MT or WCH, more like a Logan Elm, so who knows if any of that is true. I've also heard rumblings about Roll and Barnes as well.

Unfortunately, I have heard the same about Houserman. I heard he was 100% going to LE. Supposively, he will get more exposure there. I dont know what exposure he thinks he will get for bball. He needs to stay off the hardwood and stay on the grid iron, if he thinks he has any chance of getting a college scholly.

Roll and Barnes are Warriors for life. They will lead the Warriors next year as seniors.

Wow. High School basketball is becoming like college ball. You can't even really discuss who is going to be good until you wait and see what players certain schools are going to land in the off season.

^^^^^^
I agree completly.

Adena should be pretty solid, but just like above, we won't know how good they can be until we see who stays and who goes.

Huntington loses a bunch, but still returns Cottrill and Trusty, plus Magill played big in stretches this season.

Paint Valley returns Matt Workman and has a very good freshman coming up as well.

Piketon returns the most and should be the early favorite.

Southeastern-- ??? Who knows. If they get rid of Coach Jordan, then it could be even rougher.

Unioto has Kimsey and Bower back, plus always have athletes. Another year under Coach Hoops' system should help as well.

Westfall will once again be full of athletes and pretty solid basketball players, can they finally pull it together?

Zane Trace is another one that could be hurt by transfers, but if everyone stays, they will be a very good ballclub. Lots of contributions from the underclasses this past season.

Lets just say no one transfers .
These are how my predictions would stack up :

1.Piketon
2.Adena
3.Zane Trace
4.Huntington
5.Westfall
6.Unioto
7.Paint Valley
8.Southeastern

I don't think Southeastern will finish last if the present coaching staff is retained. They had a good group of players on the reserve team. But if a coaching change happens who knows. Would not be surprised if some kids don't play or even change schools.

Does anyone know about Huntingtons' Coach Urigh? I have heard that Huntington may not resign him.

Huntington would be crazy not to WANT to resign Uhrig, now maybe he does not want to come back. Leave on a championship note. Along with Southeastern who would have been terrible the last few years, if it wasnt for the coaching efforts of "The Legend". SE needs Larry Jordan to be successful!

If everyone thats supposed to leave ends up staying at their respective schools I the league will be another tight race til the end.

1. Piketon, returns almost everyone, they have unlimited firepower on the offensive end of the floor.

2. ZT, once again, returns a good core group of kids, that have had another year of varsity basketball under their belts, and should be in it until the end.

3. Adena, will have the best player in the league in Roll, one of the best role players in Barnes, and one of the best big men (if he stays) in Houserman. Followed by Skaggs, Boyle, and Welch. Adena just needs a point guard. Roll might take that position, but that will take away from their offense.

4. Westfall, great athletes, who will be the coach?

5. Huntington, with Uhrig at the helm, they could find a way to make another run at it, the loss of the best duo in the league will hurt, but return a few role players that have experienced a championship and will be hungry for more.

6. Unioto, Coach Hoops will be able to make this team competitive but in the end not enough to make a run at the 'ship. They will be the team that upsets the #1 team, and ruins teams hopes, but if they are the like the UHS teams of recent years, they will be inconsistant and have another so, so season.

7. Southeastern, not too sure who they return or lose, but if the board decides not to re-sign Larry Jordan, this team will be right where i have them, the whole year. If he comes back he will find a way to make them believe and get them to be competitive.

8. PV, the future looks bright, with the upcoming freshman in Jake Kretzer, but other than that, this year will not be any better than last. Rumor mill has it that Kretzer wont even be at PV for much longer?

If I had to guess I'd say Kretzer will stick around Paint Valley for a his freshman year just to see how things shape up , but that's just me . The kids got potential at every sport he plays , and as we all know PV isn't the strongest school in the svc . So it wouldnt surprise me at all if his family moved him to a different district.
