Word on RV basketball
Re: Word on RV basketball
Why haven't I? I haven't been asked. Why hasn't gary? I don't know either. Whoever gets it let's hope they are there for the kids and do the best for the team in all decisions. I appreciate all comments good or bad everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to that. For everone who wants someone not to coach there is someone that does. Again I don't know why gary isn't on ozs staff but the reason I haven't is I haven't been asked. Is there an opening in his staff? Jr high is still there and has been. Ozs asst still there and jv still there all I know is 9th and I don't know is that coach. Noone got an interview for the girls job. Internal canidate was asked and she accepted. Several good canidates got no interviews such as todd miller which is a great coach

Anyone who knows basketball and watched the talent he had at OH would know he had no chance to win. OH would still be a mediocre team now without the transfers.

Re: Word on RV basketball
You are correct assassin. Gary coached jh and stopped for a couple years to join the jv team before heading to oh. His team was bad but we both have been out of coaching for 2 years now. Its hard to get a job around here not being a teacher but sometimes not being a teacher is not a prob. I have coached at gahs for oz but had to resign to take a job in cinci. Oz is loyal to his asst. If u are coaching for him he has your back 100%. At jh level you scout for oz and its nice that he trusts you and your comments. This thread is for rv and the kids and not to put down anyone. As a coach no coach ever wants to hear my kid will never play for him. If any coach says that doesn't bother him he is a liar or shouldn't be coaching. Good luck to all the canidates

Re: Word on RV basketball
summer has not been a complete lost...coach mccarley has stepped up and has been opening the gm and has them playing in Jackson I think...He should get a look... He has done a good job with the kids in the past.

Re: Word on RV basketball
Good Luck to who ever is the next coach at RV. There is room for all programs in Gallia County to have success! There is always someone for a coach and someone against a coach, that is the nature of the business. As for being on a certain coaching staff sometimes it comes down to opennings. Once a coach gives up a position it can be hard to get back in if the new guy does a good job.

I know there were some interviews today, but I don't know about the board meeting.
Re: Word on RV basketball
Tell the truth, do you really believe that RV will hire outside the system? I do not know these other fellows but McCarley deserves a shot. He may be a little to opinionated for the administration but he knows what it takes to win games. Some students do not like him because he simply plays the best players and from the stands you can see it. He is willing to put in the time and has done so for years for practically no money.
Over the years he has been very vocal in public venues about what he believes needs to happen at RV, not only in basketball but in all programs. He has been right on target with his comments but it has hurt him politically. He simply hates to see all of the programs perform poorly when so much raw talent is in the ranks. He should be the next coach.

Those were different economic times with a different Board. GCLS is loaded up with ex-coaches who, over the years, were brought in to turn something around. The days of hiring people to coach and then creating a position for them are disappearing if not gone. You can only use so many teachers within the same disciplines. I do know that the established practice of giving preference to bargaining unit members combined with the financial reluctance to create new positions will make it difficult. If there were a vacancy in staff and a coach that fit the teaching job description, nobody currently employed wanted the coaching position and/or a coach were willing to work for the supplemental pay without a teaching slot then you are right, it could happen.
I guess a scenerio could exist but the planets would have to be in a line. GCLS has traditionally not focused on athletics to a point that they are willing to make a stand in these matters. The records speak for themselves. I think that only this past year we saw a long-time coach lose his position to a bargaining unit member. There may have been other factors but if so I am not aware of them.

Re: Word on RV basketball
Maybe I misunderstood your post Sandman but, when was there ever a teaching position created to hire a coach at RV. I don't know of any.
What teaching position is open at RV now Ricky?
The job has been offered. Teaching position included.

Re: Word on RV basketball
I have seen Chris Ellcessor coach (as a step in while the head coach was on leave or something) If they do not at least give this man a chance they are making a huge mistake. It is my understanding he is one of the most organized individual on and off the court and knows his game. He is smoove (yes with a V) from what I hear. If there is someone in this area that knows their game it is Ellcessor by far. The admiration the girls had for him is far above all others. I attended a girls game last season that Ellcessor attended and he truly hasn't been given the credit he deserves from administration and big mouth parents in this area. The players love him! Parents and heavy pocket adminstrators caused problems for this coach. Parden me when I say his record speaks for itself, and RV would be foolish not to consider this man. His LOVE for the game and experience on the hardwood is far above anyone coach I have ever had the privilidge watching.
AND for the record he can hit a golf ball farther than anyone I have ever seen...it's his chipping game that needs work.

Thanks Steelcity. If the position has been offered and its a teaching position too it has to be to Harrison so we need to back whoever the choice is and hope they do the best for the team. There has been alot of nice comments for all canidates. I wish RV all the luck in the future.
By the way my golf game sucks.

Re: Word on RV basketball
If a teaching position is available then you are right, it can happen and nobody can complain. Regarding past offerings, I am not sure that positions were created, but certainly hiring was tweaked to give preference to incoming coaches for specific programs.
Normally I would not debate this issue, but I was on the Board for at least 3 such hirings (that I can remember) from out-of-district and none of them are currently in the position that they were hired for at the time. Don't ask who they were because I do not intend to embarass anyone.
In the past the Board has attempted to deal with the problems and for whatever reason, it just has not worked out.

Your right Whodey (which you need to change your name) there has been alot of nice comments for everyone. Quit being so modest; if it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and looks like a duck--then its a duck. I call em' like I see em' If they have hired a teacher for the position just for the sake of having a teacher as a coach thats not always the best decision (WE ALL KNOW THAT) I can be judgemental about the job because I dont have a kid playing, a job at the school, and truly dont live in the area. I have seen Ellcessor coach and interact on and off the court and he is a classy act. Don't let a good thing get away.
