1982 Southern Tornadoes
Re: 1982 Southern Tornadoes
Some people just need to think before they speak! Looking into the past is one of the best ways to plan for the future. You can see what worked, what didn't work, and maybe what they forgot to try. You tell me that as a kid growing up looking at the names on that 1982 banner in the gym that says 1982 State Runner up, that you wouldnt want to get your own banner up there. As I said, if you are not from Racine you wouldn't understand, so just keep your comments to yourself. They history of Southern High School is rich in tradition, maybe not in the last 10-15 years, but nevertheless the histry is there. Ask anyone who played sports at Southern High School, and I would almost promise that at one time or another they thought I want my name up there someday! Cause I know as a kid growning up I looked at that everytime I walked in the gym. My time has come and gone in a flash but that doesnt mean that the history of my high school didn't play a major role in the success that my team and I enjoyed in other sports!

Are they bringing back the Larry Bird short shorts?
How about bringing back coach Wolfe? Maybe the local barber will give all the players free flat tops? Will they do the "Racine Southern" chant again. WOW! 30 years. That is a huge time span to evoke nostalgia. Can't wait to read some more of the stories from 3 decades ago. My dad talks about those times a lot. I am sure some of the players, who weren't born at that time, love hearing these stories.

Talent comes and goes but Tradition never dies. So it was 30 years ago, would it about time for the kids of those players to becoming through the program then?

Most schools only hang banners when they WIN. The fact that racine has a banner to commemorate a losing effort is part of the problem in and of itself.

Nelsonville Cable Channel 15 from time to time will show the NY vs. Southern game from 1982 (I think it was '82) when NY knocked off Southern. That is an exciting game to watch on tv and the gym was packed!!
Even though I'm too young to really remember 1982, this was a huge game. You could tell from the reactions of the announcers, players, and fans.

Re: 1982 Southern Tornadoes
KC, you dont have the first clue what your talking about. virtually every school in the state and definately any school in southeast ohio would hang a banner in the gym if they made the final four. When you walk into Belpre's gym check out their wall. they have been to the final four 3 times (and lost all 3 times) but still have giant banners celebrating that accomplishment.
**Trimble might be the exception to this rule because they have such an outstanding tradition that only a championship banner would hang on that giant, concrete block, hideous red wall.

Re: 1982 Southern Tornadoes
I am amazed at the smugness of the people from Trimble.
Have they ever won the state in anything? Or even came close?
Tradition is Tradition.
Trimble has football tradition and Southern has basketball.
Nobody is attacking Trimble's tradition why come at Southern's?

Nobody gives a darn about Trimble as much as you people from there do think that the world revolves around Glouster.
There is envy. Just aggravation that you can't stay on your own topics without running down other programs.

Yes things are looking up for Southern. Maybe things will be better for Trimble next year . Maybe they will actually win one tournament game. Until they do I guess they will keep posting on Southern's site. I guess if we hadn't one a tournament game in over three years we would post on someone eles site too. I feel sorry for them.

Re: 1982 Southern Tornadoes
try to get along and pay you people a compliment and you get mad and insult me??? well i guess if my team had never won a league championship i would be like that too. then i would get on someone elses thread and talk about how many times we almost won championships.

Re: 1982 Southern Tornadoes
I see nothing wrong with almost winning a championship. Nor do I see anything wrong with bowing out of the tourny in the first round when you know your efforts are futile. So I laud both of teams for their valiant efforts.

Re: 1982 Southern Tornadoes
Winning a district title in basketball is pretty much meaningless and I find it humorous that people glorify that accomplishment. Its what you do in the regionals that determines greatness. I also find humor in people whose claim to fame is that they lost to the eventual state champions. Yeah, so did a bunch of other teams. Are they making banner in racine for all the times they have lost to eventual state champs. They could hand at least 3 of those in their gym. I am just proud that those of us in green and white dont take honor in bullscat accomplishments like being a "Virtual" champion or losing to the eventual state champs.
