Depending on how heated the argument was, then yes I believe the coach made the right decision. The coach has every right to do what he did and if they argument violated team rules then he obviously has a reason to do so. However kicking the kid off the team seems too much of a punishment in my opinion. If the parents have a problem, which most would, then they should go to the AD.

I can see this being used by fans if the Tigers perform poorly throughout the season

Ironton will be a handfull, I don't see one player changing that.

I wil also be surprised if the kid is kept of the team.

two things.

1. why was there a 21 year old at a high school open gym?

2. if it truly was an open gym then how can a coach say anything? was this a day the coach could have contact with said player or were those used up? if those days were used up, then could this be a ohsaa rules violation?

lots of ways this could go.

Coaches can be at open gym, this isn't college. If it's like Chesapeake was, open gym is just that open gym and old players come in and play with current players.

LOL, this is not going to get heated. Coach Lafon is a great coach and a great person. No doubt in my mind that whomever the player was, was in the wrong.

my guess is there is probably more to the story than just this one time incident.

older guys come to open gyms most places.

If it's who I think it is, this for sure has not been the first time. Just the last. And if it's who I think it is, he's been given more than one chance the last couple of years.

dont think so, otherwise it could be considered an organized event.
not if the contact days are used up.

As I understand the rules, there is no difference between a coach being a weight room supervisor or "running" open gym. Most districts give coaches supplemental contracts to run open gym anyway. It's not considered a contact day as long as the coach is not providing any instruction.

From my understaning of the rules, As long as the coach did not kick me out of open gym...and cut after November 10th...then the coach is Ok...but if he kick me out of open gym and told him not to come back, he just broke the rules by OHSAA. By the rules any kid can play in open gym and the coach can not coach in OPEN GYM. That is from my understanding of the rules by the OHSAA.

From the story I hear, the student in question was NOT told he would not be playing this year. He did try out and did get cut. He got into arguments with coaches at open gym, even wanting to fight them..from what I hear. There's obviously more to the story than the first post presents.

(Speaking in general) Kids needs to be held accountable for their actions. Period. It is b/c of the obscene lack of accountability that kids continue to act out and to "push the envelope".

I do not know the specifics of the situation which caused the kid to be cut from the team. But...I would bet my next paycheck that the offense had to be pretty bad or this kid would be a member of Fighting Tiger basketball team. I have also heard of other athletically good kids being cut from their high school team b/c of attitute. I, for one, hope the trend continues.

You cannot restrict, regardless of age, anyone from playing in open gym. If a 35 year old showed up and wanted to play, they would have to be allowed to do so. Secondly, if I am a Head Coach, I can be present at open gym. However, no "coaching" can go on. The rule is open as such to give the coach present the ability to break up scuffles etc... This, in my interpretation, is not considered "contact".

It sounds like the Ironton Basketball Coaches are going to have discipline on their teams.

The way I see it a coach that is supervising open gym can restrict anyone from coming to the event if that person has exhibited poor behavior. Example, (15 or 50 years of age) Cant keep the language in check or is violent or malicious towards anyone then the coach may ask them not to return.
