I have found that teams don't show a lot in the previews, but the athletes still want to compete and put their best foot forward. Its too early for predictions but it looks like it could be a three way race for number one in the OVC between Fairland, South Point, and Chesapeake.

South Point 42-River Valley 8

I arrived late so I didn't get a good look at the SP starters playing together. SP demolished an overmatched River Valley team 42-8 in only 2 quarters. RV has Curnette #20 as their main offensive weapon.

South Point has some size and a bunch of athletes that can run the floor. Cody Taylor #50, Greg Taylor #52, and Ethan Prater #44 can bang inside and rebound. All three have good footwork around the basket.

South Point's gaurds run the floor well. Chase Kratzenberg #4, Jordan Fletcher #10, and Drew Lynd #32 played well. Lynd has a nice shot. South Point played good team defense.

Chesapeake 45-Rock Hill 17.

Rock Hill is lacking experience. David Turley #3 is a quick point gaurd, but had 3 fouls in the first 4 minutes. Rock Hill turned the ball over a lot. They have a big man with a nice touch around the basket, 6'10" Sam Cook. He scored 10 of their 17 points.

Even though Chesapeake was much smaller they scrapped around the basket and got a lot of rebounds and loose balls. They are tough defensively. Peter Hintz and Matt Angle are some of the best on ball defenders in the OVC. Both work hard on every possession on both ends of the floor. Hintz had 11 points.

Chesapeake has 2 of the best outside shooters in the OVC in sophomore Nathan Copley and Senior Kyle Webb. They each had 11 points.

Trent Saunders and Travis Zimmerman both played hard underneath. They hustle and play good defense. Colton Lindsay is a scrapper and a banger. Drew Brock came off the bench and hit a couple of outside shots.

Chesapeake doesn't have a lot of depth so they will have to stay out of foul trouble if they are to compete for the OVC title. They looked like the best conditioned team. Coaches Ryan Davis, Bryan Wells, and Steven Ater will have the Panthers ready to play each week.

Fairland beat Coal Grove by approximately 20 points. I forgot to write down the final score.

Fairland didn't play their starters until the second period.

Coal Grove has some good athletes with length. Cody Damron #35 can jump. He dunked during warmups. He likes to shoot away from the basket. Sparks #33 has a decent shot. Devin Monnier #23 had 10 points. Coal Grove has problems handling the ball under defensive pressure. They had several turnovers. They do not play very good team defense.

Fairland looks like the best all around team in the OVC at this point. They have the best all around player and floor leader in Cole Hatfield #20. This kid can pass, shoot, and play defense. Zach Jordan #4 is a good on ball defender and hustles on both ends of the floor. Chad Fisher #14 is quick and has a decent shot. Matt Bloomfield #10 runs the floor well. If Tyler Godby #22 and Adam Berry #24 can rebound and play good defense in the post this team will be very good.

That RV-SP score is amazing. RV was competitive with them last year even when they had Mayo.

Did RV actually play starters or does anyone know?

RV ran no offense by design and played no starters together and didn't dress one starter.

South Point looked awesome at times. River Valley looked lost and they kept turning the ball over with either bad passes or traveling calls. Rock Hill was outmanned by a quick Peake defense.Hill better learn to break a press or their season will be horrible. Peake is pretty short this year so their quickness will be needed. Fairland looked good too. Coal Grove just doesn't have the talent to win the OVC although they won't be the bottom of the OVC any more. I look for the finals to end up as:

1.SP/ Fairland
3.Peake
4River Valley/ Coal Grove
6.Rock Hill

RV coaches didnt even coach. Seemed like they just sat there the whole time writing stuff down. Peake was impressive. Amazing defense. Rock Hill had a deer in headlights look alot.

River Valley looked sloppy and got demolished because they didnt play starters and didnt run designed offense. The Raiders did not take this preview seriously so they can't be judged by the score.

sounds like a great excuse..

hopefully this same line won't be used if their season turns out to be a flop..

Well cghornet10, I am not trying to make excuses as you say....but I have a question.......

Why is it in the OVC previews for football, when RV either plays a team close or beats them, the other team says that they werent taking the preview serious, or playing starters, or running plays.....but when RV says they did that in the OVC previews for basketball, it is excuses.....not trying to start a fight, just wondering. Every year RV either plays a team tight or wins in the OVC football preview, and I always here the non-starters, not running plays, not taking it serious comments, and now RV does it, and of course its just all EXCUSES....JMO
