Re: Bloom Carroll at Logan; 12/6/11
Very shaky start to the season for Logan. Rumors abound that two players started bc the staff didnt want them to be upset that they wouldnt be; pulling the PG after he hits two threes and has all their points 3 mins into the game; the Jourdan kid sitting on the bench for as long as he did was crazy imo; he's their best athlete and gives more scoring and defense than other options; and it appeared there was a LOT of attitude towards the staff from players in key spots. Check the ego at the door. BC was more experienced and a complete team. 3 players almost hit the 20 point mark. Logan needs a true PG but the Vermillion kid looks to be a stud in the making. He played very well and was very active but got into foul trouble. Several questions already after game one. Myers continues to improve. Heard he looked good last summer and should be starting imo. If I am playing Logan I would press until my kids collapsed. A few bright spots, but lots of work to be done for the Purple and White.

... eaglesrock - you must be reading someone else, never posted anything about "in your face defense" ... last night's game was what you would expect when a team of veteran/varsity experienced players (BC) take on a team of "rookies" literally the first ever varsity start, extended varsity play for the entire team (Logan) ... when varsity experience meets JV experience you get Varsity Experience 72 JV experience 55 ... I DID post this early in the preseason "... one of THE "givens" in high school hoops is that for your team to be successful you have to have good guard play, a pg who can breakdown opposing teams full/half court pressure ... varsity pressure IS different from jv pressure as ALL the factors come together for the defense - size, athletic ability, length, quickness, strength, experience ... Logan's youngsters will need to learn in a hurry - get their feet wet quickly, make the necessary adjustments ... as you pointed out these kids have basketball backgrounds that will allow that learning curve to close quickly - sometimes experience at the varsity level IS the OJT medicine that has to be swallowed before we see improvement ... should be fun to watch this season as the youngsters "learn the varsity game" ... definitely holds true after Tuesday nights contest ... On the Job Training is tough vs a Bloom Carroll (who knocked off Africentric at ZT last weekend ... hmmm a BIG game under their belts coming into the Logan game but I digress) ... throw in Newark ( who likes to be physical, make the basketball game a HS football playoff contest) - the first road game for the Purple youngsters, vs a team which will pound on them for 32 minutes, will be difficult for the youngsters to stay focused on basketball - another teachable moment for the youngsters ... in comes Chillicothe with proven/heralded BIG man 6-8 Malik London who can dominate at both ends of the floor vs ANY TEAM, along with Zac Johnson who will be breaking ankles all over Southern/Southeast Ohio this Winter while averaging 20+ ppg <= more On the Job Training for the youngsters ...
... looking at a few of the "positives" that this group of youngsters showed us Tuesday night :
* (Obvious) ... the boyz never quit, played hard for 32 minutes ...
* (Not Obvious)... Chiefs had 8 players get into the scoring column vs the BC starters (BC put in 2 reserves at the 1:21 mark of the 4th)
* (Not Obvious)... 13 TOs vs a very active BC backcourt ... OJT<= during the game improvement Chiefs had 9 TOs in the first 2 quarters vs only 2 in each of the last 2 quarters ...
* (Not Obvious) ... Chiefs matched the BC shooters with 6 treys ... Logan had 4 different shooters get the 6 treys while BC had 3 ...
* (Not Obvious)... Chiefs finished At the Rim 10 times on the night matching BC's ATR of 10 ...
... continue to look forward to watching the On the Job Training, gaining of experience, learning the "Varsity" game by this group of youngsters ...

Have to disagree with you Eaglesrock. Thought Logan played a whale of a def game against a final 4 opponent. I think I know the defensive mind behind that in your face def. It came from coach Koons who is a legend on that part of the game. Seen it to many times at trimble. And if you knew anything about BBall you would have known you had just seen a complex motion off. in action. And a comment on another post as far as the egos at Logan dont believe that is a problem. Never heard of any ego problems at Logan before this. Cant see Helber giving up wins to apease cry babys hes never done that before not his style. He knows who his players are and will start his best 5

I guess maybe I need to sit up in the cheap seats with trubbguru, and pfloyd. The view must be much different way up there. I didn't realize Koons was the defensive guru of southeast Ohio basketball.
Oh that was a motion offense they were running? That explains why I didn't recognize what they were doing, because I always thought "motion" meant there would be some actual movement by the offense. My bad!!

Well if one of your starters is over heard telling the staff they are just giving up, as he's coming off the floor; I'd say that is an attitude issue in my book. Logan lost by what almost 20 points? Thats considered a "whale of a game?" Wow....
I agree with PFloyd that its not all bad but there are some holes that need to be patched up and the egos need to be cast aside by not only the kids but the staff. Whats more important; winning games or keeping role players happy? Find the best rotation you can and go with it. Myers and Mutzner need to be starting imo with McNeil, Vermillion and Miller. Jourdan should be the first player off the bench, he's your best athlete who can shoot and play defense and he can handle. Stop worrying about whos ego's get bruised and worry about winning. If not, the next guy will.

Whats this about the next guy will. Helbers job is not being judged on wins and losses thats what he has told several. It's about taking the program in a diffferent direction than the last coach did. It's not about wins and losses at logan isn't that obvious.

How is this any different from the Football program for which you seem to have a totally different and contradictory view...a little hypocrital maybe?moonshine wrote:Nation and all our loyal supporters lets give this staff and team time to develop, do not pull the plug yet!Loganchiefsnation wrote:Very shaky start to the season for Logan. On a seperate note, someone saying a 20 point beatdown involved a "whale of a defensive effort" by the losing teams is one of the most laughable things i have ever seen posted on this board....Serioulsy??

No the last coach was given 10 reasons as to why he was canned and wins and losses was one of those reasons; along with a bunch of other garbage. It wouldnt matter if Logan went 18-2 if a parent or grandparent or homeless man or convicted felon or mass media web site or preacher said the head coach or one of the assistants were out of line, they would be gone regardless. Thats the current state of Logan Athletics. ANYWAY; back to basketball. Logan needs to play better.

Remember this is only the begining of John's 2nd year as head coach, Let's see how this season ends and then we will judge!.
