Well as i have read the article i believe the team only had 8 players, the 3 subs did play.
yes i would tell my kid to take the beating and show the sportsmanship that should be given.
i also believe making a lay up is so much easier than making a 3..

So you are telling me if your child just got beat 100- 0 that you would shake the hand and congratulate the opposing coach? You don't have to tell the kids not to play hard. Tell them no press and play hard in a zone. No fast breaks but you can break down the others team defense for a lay-up. You can get jv players some varsity experience.

Glad the coach got fired he got what he deserved.

Ignert1,

The article (I read it too) stated that an opposing parent said that some of the fans and an assistant coach was cheering. It never stated that the Coach himself was cheering.

Coop:
While the losing school has only about 20 girls and 8 playing on the team, the WINNING school has only about 30 girls and 8 playing on the team. It is not like there is a lot of difference between the two schools.

These two teams had to play each other--they are in the same district--it is like a league and you have to play everyone in your district.

Also, whoever read an article that said they were pressing late apparently read an article where the person who wrote did not know what they were talking about. People do have a tendency to embellish the stories in these cases. According to someone who was actually there, the press was called off after the first 3 minutes of the game. With only 9% of the game played, 25% of the scoring had already taken place. Obviously adjustments had to have been made to slow the scoring. If there weren't adjustments, the score was on pace to have been 260+ to 0.

I think it is the round numbers that bothers people so much. 97-2 and people wouldn't have cared but 100-0 looks contrived. No one complains about Dallas Academy's 66-4 loss or their 55-6 loss this season. They have only maded it over 7 points once this season (at least among reported scores). Thank goodness, they only plays a short schedule (11 games) or there would be more lopsided losses for people to get upset about.

Just now on Sportscenter they said the school had about 20 students total....who knows. But like you said, the 60 point losses dont matter? It's pretty ridiculous...

The coach should have been fired the very next day as soon as possible after such a ludacris and ignorant act. According to ESPN, a source who was at the game said they pressed the entire game and did not let up. They kept shooting three's and trying to score quickly. As the school edged closer to 100 the student section and the witness said even parents were chanting "One Hundred, One Hundred". This was the worst act of sportsmanship I have ever heard of. What makes it worse is this is a school for the learning disabled. Just reading the story should make anyone sick to their stomache. If these were teams on the same playing level or neither team had a disability, then it would be different. That isn't the case though. How hard would it have been for the coach to slow the game down and score at a slower pace, even if he could score at will. I am glad he got fired and think they should impose a 5 year ban before he can coach again.

I don't think ESPN would report on something if they thought the source they had wasn't credible. They have a reputation to maintain.

"They are really good," Civello said. "Their point guard is terrific. This is what it came down to in the second half: steal at half court and layup. Steal and layup. Steal and layup. It was a layup drill. They finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left." Covenant's point guard had 48 points.

How difficult would it have been for the coach to tell the point guard to stop stealing the ball let them pass it around for awhile?

Good sportsmanship requires lines to be drawn and this coach clearly stepped over the line. What on earth was he thinking!

Just like our government wouldn't invade a country over possible WMD's without a source, that was "credible", confirming it

Once again-NO coach worth a darn. ANY sport, is gonna insert a player & tell him/her not to give 100%.

There's no indication that the Covenant girls were deliberately humiliating or taunting the opponents. They were simply playing the game hard as they could.

The coach was prolly fired for making public comments in disagreement with the school's dictators. But those gents' DISRESPECT OF THEIR OWN SCHOOL'S TEAM is a serious mistake IMO, & their committment to the school is in serious doubt.

And no, it's not a "Christian" thing to do. They shoulda been happy their team won. The Christian thing to have done was to thank Dallas Academy for scheduling them, & wish them good luck in their future endeavors.

Now, did Goliath stand a chanve against David? Not really. That was a one-sided match from the gitgo. He was as a battleship against an aircraft carrier. By all accounts, David was an expert slinger; Goliath shoulda known this, as slingers were feared by soldiers far & wide for being able to kill at a distance as archers did, & David's sling was hardly invisible. Besides that, GOD guided David's aim.

But anyway, I hope Covenant has to pay a good chunka change to Coach grimes for ending his contract. Loox as if the REAL losers here is gonna be the Covenant team & the school itself. I know if I had a daughter eligible to attend that school, it'd be at the BOTTOM of my list right now!

Scoring 100 points in a game is a bit ridiculous, but firing the coach is just as ridiculous. 100 is a bit much. I'm sure they could have lightened up a bit, but telling your players to not go hard is tough. That's the complete opposite of what a player is normally told to do. Now you're stuck mid season without a coach. What does that do for the team? The coach should have not been fired. It's not helping anyone.

I saw a video of the Dallas academy team at practice and they couldn't make an uncontested layup. It said most of them had never played basketball before. Obviously, they're just playing to play, not win championships.

Scoring 100 points is not ridiculous. Scoring 100 points when the other team has 0 is quite ridiculous.

Teams back off all the time when the game is decided; it's called good sportsmanship. This coach obviously has never heard of the concept.

That's what I meant. And I don't agree with them running the score up like that. There are ways to slow it up some. Of course, I don't agree with just throwing the ball away or passing the ball for excessive amounts of time, either. The whole situation is just messed up.

The thing that gets me all this is the concept of the 100 point differential in the score. Everyone is crying foul and say that they are glad the coach got fired for running up a 100 point difference in the score in this game. Yet, hardly anyone said anything when Wellston got hammered 131-30 a few years back by North College Hill. Their was no calling for the head of NCH's coach or for Coach Derrow for subjecting his boys to what he had to know would a blowout just of this proportion. Instead everyone praised Derrow for allowing his kids to be embarrassed because of the "experience" they recieved and laid praise at NCH's team for being such a dominate force that season.

You know, for the most part, I've stayed out of this one...........

Burg 77 - Come on dude, the Rockets knew exactly what they were getting into when they stepped onto the floor with NCH, or for anyone else who stepped onto the floor when they were playing with Bron's team at ASVSM........

Oh, to see NCH, or Huntington, take on LeBron's team at ASVSM would have been a sight to see, ummmm, for a few minutes anyway...........

We are talking about two H.S. "private/Christian" schools, with basically the same number of students, and players, go head-to-head, so.............

how much injustice was done?

Your analogies are really not supportive of your argument, but that's OK. Really doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things over a low level varsity girl's game.

Personally, I don't like the outcome, but that is just me.

How can a team not score? You would think someone would throw one in.

They are in the same district--in Texas, that means they have to play each other. It is essentially a league game. Kentucky sets up their districts similarly. That is why the OKAC died was when they changed that. Remember, one school has about 20 girls and the other has about 30 girls enrolled. Each has a roster of 8 players on their teams. On paper, this looked like a good match up, even if you ignore the fact that they had to play each other.

Everyone keeps using Wellston as an example but man let me tell you I remenber Wellston laying a few lickings on some teams also - I also believe man
the Rockets beat Sout Gallia 104-32 and River Valley 105 to 35.
They also have laid some lickings on some other schools - like Oak Hill who as I recall quit playing Wellston for a few seasons. Thats the way it is man.
