Good question Sparky,

In my opinion he's very similar to Middleton. In regards to points, I believe his 22 or 23 pts. in the SHL would equate to about 15 at MC...they'd be a whole lot tougher points too!

I'm not sure about that. How tough is Mason County's schedule? I remember last year it seems in their tournament run they didn't play anyone that could come within 20 plus points of them?

Last year they played the toughest schedule in the state of KY. They played a stacked Lex. Cath team, Scott Co., Clark Co., Bryan Station, etc. plus a few teams in the top 25 of the COUNTRY! while in Hawaii. I'd say that gives them some street cred. In the tourney they did have some blowouts. I think they won by around 10 to the #1 team in KY this year.

Another quality comment from this forums most insightful poster. I am wondering why they even held the tourney last year?? Could have saved people alot of gas and even a pig or two from becoming hotdogs.

I think we are all kidding ourselves to think players get as much recognition in the SHL as players playing for Mason County. For God's sake, coaches have to submit their own story to even get something published in the newspaper.

If you guys don't think that just as many people, if not quite a few more, could identify Blake Justice, as easily as Russ Middleton, then you're the ones living in the fantasy world. We are acting like Mason County is not just on the other side of the river.
If there is no exposure in the SHL/surrounding area, Brian Grant, Paul Cluxton, Nathan Copas, a couple girls from Eastern, etc.... must have sold themselves to get where they went, I don't know.
I appreciated and expected the comments from YC and bucknut 53.

If your good enough, you'll get seen and heard about. Kentucky just does a much better job of reporting they're basketball and they're State Tourney is set up so much better with the regions and all. Besides if the Coach is doing his job, he should be working with the player and promoting him to the coaches he feels that he can realistically play at. One problem is, people way over estimate some kids level they can play at. But players and coaches should be sending tapes out if they really have the talent to play at the next level.

AAU and camps provide most of todays exposure anyway.

How many "Kentuckians" does it take...no that's a bad joke. Seriously, how many "Kentuckians" travel into Ohio to watch games? I know for a fact, many "Ohioians" take the trip across the river to watch certain players play at Mason County.

shljunkie...you mentioned four or five major success stories going back to 1993 in the SHL. It seems...this is only an opinion (no facts to back it up) that Mason County has a top recruit every other year.

Now, let me say this. I do not feel that these Mason County players are that much better than the players in SHL. In fact, I am a huge fan of the talent in the SHL. What's the difference? Why is Billy Gillespie sitting in the Field House and not at Peebles, Eastern Brown, North Adams, or other SHL schools? The coaches do their job. They try to make contacts and get their players recognized. You know the pride a coach would have to say that one of his players is a D1 player? It's all about exposure and the belief that the SHL is the armpit of basketball in southeast Ohio.

With all of you saying that if a player is good enough, he will be noticed, you're probably right. I am sure the University of Utah would totally agree with your logic.

SHLjunkie,

Your comment about the community college was appreciated also. You talk about people and make a statement like that and then expect no response and then you get upset when the favor is returned? Wow!! :122246 :122246

Miller and Lofton, who else?
Good to see that there are a lot of posters on here who agree, that's it not just about where you go to school and again, if you're good enough to make it to the BIG d1 schools and very very few are, they will find you.

So "it seems every other year" means 2? Gee, with all the exposure they get across the great ohio river I would've thought they would be sending kids straight from playing several years of high school ball right on to the NBA.

Sorry to be dense but I'm missing something, what is the hype about junkie stating the Setty boy is going to Community College? Is it a fact?

Is he attending community college or a big school? Is he still playing ball?

Did he have a full ride somewhere but didn't take it or is it that he did not get a scholarship to play somewhere?

Just curious...

Thank you very much Rooster! I have never ever said or meant anything negative or demeaning to any kid at all and never will! I don't even know his situation. I heard at the end of his year last year he was considering several options but really wanted to go to UK and that really wasn't an option. Then I hear he's going to Maysville, don't know the details, as I said before, that's irrelevant. I was just trying to give an opinion that he's a very good player that evidently didn't get the big offers that many might have thought he would by transferring to Mason Co. Happy as crap for him whatever he chooses to do and for the opportunity to play on a state championship team. I would be remiss to say I wish he could've done it at Peebles.
Anyway, it's very annoying when people are obviously very defensive and take things to heart without trying to put comments into peoples mouth.

Did this sound like a "jab" or a "slam" to anyone else?
