District Championship Fairland vs Waverly @The Convo 3/9
Re: District Championship Fairland vs Waverly @The Convo 3/9
Tiger Nation by far the biggest and loudest at the convo this year, and how bout them rally towels. Rumor is we switch to orange sweet sixteen shirts for the regionals.
Re: District Championship Fairland vs Waverly @The Convo 3/9
Hats off to Fairland. That's a nice team and a classy group of kids! Evan Maddox is amazing! How many points did he end up with?
The kids for Waverly really played their roles well last night. Brock Davis seems to thrive coming off the bench. Clutch shots and great defensive pressure. Philip Hart hit the huge three in the fourth quarter and calmly sank two foul shots when Fairland had cut the lead to five. And without Doc Kelly taking care of the ball the entire game we don't win.
On to Thursday! Don't be satisfied! I like the idea of Orange.......

smurray,
What is this about shirts? I always figured you to be one to break out the body paint!
On to the game last night.
Jake was Jake and deserves every it of praise he gets but I'm not going to go in to his play. Kelly did his job which is handling the ball and not backing down against the Fairland press. And handling the press smartly, when it wasn't there or he got trapped, he did nothing cute, he did nothing fancy. He just reversed the ball and had somebody else bring it up. That might have been one of the better point guard performances I have seen in a long time.
Brock Davis was huge 6 or 8 points and didn't seemed to be bothered by the big stage. Just went out there and did his thing. And he gave Travis and The Tigers big minutes with Zach getting that 2nd foul. Every time I looked inside there is Brock and Taylor tipping rebounds around, there is Brick diving on the floor, there is Brock screening for Kelly breaking the press. There is Brock finding the open man.
Zach and Taylor were men among boys. Two football players taking charge down in the post. Both had modest points but when called upon they cashed in the chances to score. Hart two monster threes as the Dragons started getting close.
Congrats to the Tigers on the District Crown 32 years in the making.
Last but not least. Tiger Nation,
I remember going to basketball when Adam Shea was the Tigers star. I was at very home and away game I could find during my high school years. College and beyond I worked for newspapers and covered teams that made deep tourney runs and always held South Webster girls in the regional sat Pick North as the loudest UNTIL last night. We had 7 sections plus some of the upper seats rocking with those towels. I can't wait for Thursday night. Do I have class Friday morning? Who cares?!

Congratulations to Coach Robertson and his Waverly Tigers on their district championship........having a marquee player like Jake Kretzer can make a difference in a big game and last night was no exception.

thanks.. hope to make it up to watch this one!!!
Re: District Championship Fairland vs Waverly @The Convo 3/9
Kretzer had a nice game, playing mostly inside, for Waverly, but also some props need to be given to the supporting cast for the Tigers, who played better than they did against Fairfield Union. Congrats to Waverly on the win.

Fairland 59
Waverly 70 a final
... in the Friday nightcap Waverly took on the Fairland Dragons for the District Championship ... the game was billed as the TEAM from Fairland vs the one man show of D1 recruit Jake Kretzer for Waverly ... in the end it WAS Jake Kretzer's 37 points WITH plenty of support from the rest of the Tiger TEAM that defeated Coach Speeds Dragons ... Waverly 70 Fairland 59 a final ... Fairland came out of the blocks forcing 5 Waverly turnovers defensively while getting their talented post player Evan Salyers touches early for 8 points, with perimeter help from Evan Maddox's 2 triples - the Dragons looked sharp BUT unfortunately for FHS this was all in the first 4 minutes of the first quarter ... the 2nd 4 minutes belonged to the Tigers as Jake Kretzer ran with his size advantage over defender Eric Riley as the talented 6-6 Kretzer posted up the smaller Riley to the tune of 9 first quarter points ... Fairland 19 Waverly 15 after one ... Quarter number 2 was all Tigers - defensively Waverly kept the ball out of Salyers hands - no touches in the 2nd while controlling the boards at both ends - picking up 3 PB buckets down low in the quarter - Kretzer continued to get points in the flow of the game , while Brock Davis came off the bench for WHS to score 6 in the quarter ... Waverly 35 Fairland 28 at intermission ... Quarter number 3 was an offensive wash as both teams hit for 14 points in the quarter ... for Waverly it was all Kretzer (9 more points) while the Fairland scoring trio of Salyers (4 pts)/ Maddox (5 pts)/Fuller (5 pts) provided the offensive punch for the Dragons ...WHS 49 FHS 42 after three... the final period was entertaining as FHS made a run, getting the score down to 55-62 with 2:10 to play ... 57-64 with 1:15 left on the clock ... an iffy touch foul called on FHS/followed by an FHS turnover within 10 secs put this one out of reach as the Tigers big man Kretzer went 8/8 from the line in the 4th ... Waverly 70 Fairland 59 a final ...

I can't help but to take this opportunity to make the following point. Anyone who says that athletics does not enhance the educational process should have been at the convo friday night. There were 3 to 400 kids in the pep section who all came together for a common cause. A sense of pride, that extended beyond the students and into the entire crowd. I have been attending Waverly games for 40 yrs, and I have never seen the community come together like they did Friday night. It offered everyone with a white towel a sense that they were part of something bigger than themselves. A group of student athletes, for one night, gave a community with 16% unemployment a sense of worth that cannot be immulated in any other way I can think of. I have been a believer for most of my life that the most important lessons in teenage life are learned on the court or field. Those beliefs were justified on Friday, when the Waverly Tigers poured their heart and soul out to provide themselves, and a community, the pride that only comes with victory. Thank you Waverly Tigers for making us proud!!!

After watching McMaster, Carter, McKinley, (I am adding) Chase Lawson, and Kretzer this weekend....There is no doubt in my mind Krezter is the best player at the Convo this season.
Thank you Coach Lisath for the kind words Lets all cheer on the Tigers and the Eastern Eagles.

One section holds 135 people. Considering there was about one and half full . Well you can do the math. But other than that it was a great student section and they were very loud. Good game waverly and please beat chillicothesteppinontoes wrote:I can't help but to take this opportunity to make the following point.
