Re: 21/22 OVC
84Dragon: With how many players come and go in today's high school basketball, I don't put nearly as much stock in how junior high teams do. There is some relevance, but it's not as important as it used to be because you may not know how many of those JH players will still be around by the time they are freshmen or sophomores. It happens to virtually every school. The days of projecting what your HS roster is going to look like by watching JH basketball are becoming more rare as time goes. Parents seem to be more disgruntled about their son's playing time today and quite often look for a better situation for them.
I don't know who played for the 7th grade OVC title, but I believe that Gallia Academy and Chesapeake played for the 8th grade championship, which was held this past weekend at Portsmouth.

Re: 21/22 OVC
My grand daughter travels to Fairland 2 to 3 times a week to practice at Fairland grade school team she plays aau for Fairland she's the starting point guard for them.see nothing wrong with that.Fairland has a good program.
Re: 21/22 OVC
... how did Mr. Davis "the younger" do for the Peake 8th grade team? looking forward to seeing the young man at the jv/varsity level next year !!!
Re: 21/22 OVC
Coach Davis son has alot of skills, can shoot the 3, good passer, sees the court, needs to be stonger on rebounding but it will come he just turned 14 so it will come. Taller than his dad. He is about 6 4".
Re: 21/22 OVC
Coach Davis son finished season just shy of 500 pts.He would have been over but missed one game because of covid protocol. Also he was taken out in some games because of score. He played great in the tourament him a couple of 3s, had critical rebounds, also had some steals and blocked a couple shots.

Re: 21/22 OVC
The OVC was a lot of fun this season with virtually every team getting significant wins at home or on the road. It wasn't until the last week of the season that Fairland clinched the title. Much more balanced conference than in years past.
Looking forward to the 2022-23 OVC season. Fairland is the king until someone can dethrone them. Based on this past season, it's getting closer to seeing someone else take the crown from the Dragons.
Portsmouth just completed its 8th year in the OVC, and the competition has been intense and rivalries have developed. Very thankful that the OVC gave the Trojans a home for its athletes. PHS was the last school to win the conference (2014-2015) before Fairland's 7 year run.
Portsmouth's record in OVC play since joining in the 2014-2015 season:
Fairland........2-14.....3 losses in OT (0-3, including this year's 69-61 2OT loss at PHS)
Ironton.........6-10
Chesapeake...8-8
Gallia Acad....9-7
South Point...10-6
Coal Grove...10-6
Rock Hill......14-2
Overall: 59-53 for 8 years
Although OVC titles have been hard to come by, the Trojan junior high girls finished undefeated OVC regular season and tournament champions.

Re: 21/22 OVC
I thought for sure the OVC crown was going to be shared this year. Especially with Fairland going into Ironton without one of the best players in the conference. The young guys From both teams are going to be great in the next few years but the composure and execution from Fairland is next level.

That is a nice 8th grade group. Hope it's a sign of things to come! But they don't win without the 7th grader playing up. It's a safe bet that he's the top player in the league 7th or 8th.
Re: 21/22 OVC
Trojandave, I will respectfully say they will have a very hard time knocking off fairland for the league title the next four years. Fairland girls are loaded and gets arguably their best player back of the 8th grade group next year.trojandave wrote: Tue Feb 15, 2022 12:58 pm The OVC was a lot of fun this season with virtually every team getting significant wins at home or on the road. Re: 21/22 OVC
JonJon: The Portsmouth girls junior high team's starters were three 7th graders and two 8th graders, and when they join up with current freshman Dasia Reid in 2 years, the Trojan girls should have a really good team capable of winning the OVC and making a run to the Final 4. I'm sure that Fairland will be very good also because they gave the Trojan JH girls their toughest games, but Portsmouth did win all 3 games.
The key for the Portsmouth girls is to keep them together at PHS.

I agree that this series will be a hot girls rivalry in the next 2-4 years. Grab your popcorn Dave!! loltrojandave wrote: Thu Feb 17, 2022 11:50 am JonJon: The Portsmouth girls junior high team's starters were three 7th graders and two 8th graders, and when they join up with current freshman Dasia Reid in 2 years, the Trojan girls should have a really good team capable of winning the OVC and making a run to the Final 4. Re: 21/22 OVC
There will be some good games. I won’t be surprised if fairland wins a state championship over the next 4 years. If not, they never will. They return everyone from this years high school team that has only lost 2 games this year. Then they only lose one player the year after that. Going to be absolutely loaded.

What about Coach Davis, everyone complains and wants to leave but all he does is win win win
