Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
Zaide's ability to hit the perimeter shot as a 2 will be very important, because I can almost bet that the Trojans will be facing a lot of zone defenses this year with Tre Underwood and Dion McKinley being a tough tandem to handle in the blocks. If Andrew Bendolph stays at PHS, then I would think Zaide would be a 3 because Wayne Evans is a solid 2, and of course Bendolph would play the 1........being a 3 shouldn't really change Zaide's game much at all, and will give the Trojans another threat from the arc.
If Bendolph leaves, then the 1 could be Seth Bratchett's job, with Wayne at the 2 and Zaide at the 3........or Wayne at the 1, Zaide at the 2, and Lenny Collins at the 3........there are a number of lineup possibilities for Coach Collins.

Zaide was listed at 5'11 1/2 on the Salem football roster where he played in 2 games this fall.

I believe he suffered a broken leg during football practice while in VA too.

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
From my understanding, his injury was quite a while ago and he should be ready for basketball when tryouts are held in early November.
Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
The could be true, I don't know any details other than Salem's 2nd game was 9/10, so if the injury happened in practice the following week, it has only been 5 weeks since it happened. That should still give him plenty of time to get ready for hoops by November. It really depends on the severity of the break.trojandave wrote:From my understanding, his injury was quite a while ago and he should be ready for basketball when tryouts are held in early November.

Thought he was bigger then that. Got him listed at 173 he looked bigger then that during track season. I would have guessed 6'1 185 or so.4th n Goal wrote:Zaide was listed at 5'11 1/2 on the Salem football roster where he played in 2 games this fall.

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
Here is the latest on the Andrew Bendolph case........on Thursday, a review was held by the OHSAA on his appeal.......and they opted to delay their decision........as far as how long a delay, that is not certain........but with each passing day, the chances of Andrew playing basketball at PHS grow slimmer. With basketball season coming very soon, there is not much of a window to wait for the OHSAA to announce their decision.......I believe the next OHSAA board meeting is Dec.9........basketball season will have already started.
I personally think the OHSAA has had enough time to make a final decision........it's been almost 6 weeks since the first appeal hearing.......and it was tabled then to investigate the case further........now this past Thursday the appeal board did not come to a final decision. Whatever the decision should be, the OHSAA appeals committee has had enough time to render their verdict.........either yes or no!!
The Bendolph family and Andrew deserve a timely decision on this matter.

If he wants to play high school basketball this season he better being going to Kentucky.
Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
I have a question....I do not know the history of this young man, but why did he leave PHS in the first place and why did he decide to leave the Burg? We had a similar case in football here in Phoenix this season where a young man moved from one school to another based on that teams projected season going to be a really good one...the young man was not allowed to play football but he will be able to play basketball if he chooses to...it took AIA, our version of OHSAA almost 4, yes 4 months to make a decision and when they finally did high schoo football was in the 7th week....I fully agree with TrojanDave they have had a awfully long time to make this decision...I will bet you 5 to 1 that if this situation were in Columbus or Cleveland it would have been taken care of a long time ago.....just saying

I believe its a dead issue, no decision is the decision, its another way of saying no. Should have never left, but hindsight is 20-20

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
It would be sad if he is not allowed to play this year. I think the OHSAA is trying to lay down some laws on all the transferring, but would probably be better to hit some of the big city schools before making an example of a player in southern Ohio. Hopfully there is no issue with Whitley since he did move out of state, but since he was only there for a couple months, who knows what they will say. He has been in Burg, Portsmouth, Burg, Salem VA and now Portsmouth again in the past 4 years.
Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
As I have said on here before I am totally against all the transferring going on over the last few years. If Bendolph is ruled ineligible I feel it is due to a situation he created. That being said I hope he is eligible to play at Portsmouth. However, no matter what the decision, the OHSAA should be punished in some way for basically holding this young man and his family hostage. They have had plenty of time to make a decision and let this young man get on with his basketball career whether it be at PHS or somewhere else. If I was the family I would consider legal action. I have always felt that whether the NCAA or OHSAA they have way to much power. I also wonder if the transferring in of Zade Whitley could somehow affect their decision? It shouldn't but who knows with them

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
Concerning the trip to Florida, I called the KSA events office........I was informed that the Trojans will be playing at the HP Fieldhouse (formerly the Milkhouse)........the cost each day will be $13.50 which includes all games that day, and parking is free........the schedule should be posted very soon as the coaches have to agree with their bracket.......as soon as I find out who Portsmouth is playing, I will post it.

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
Here is Portsmouth's bracket in the KSA Holiday Classic in Florida Dec.26-30:
1. Los Alamitos, California......Class 1AA.......2009-2010 record 23-7
2. Pace, Florida.......Class 5A (second largest).......2009-2010 record 20-8
3. Spanish River HS, Boca Raton, Florida.......Class 5A.......2009-2010 record 17-8
4. James Garfield HS, Los Angeles, California......Class--Div 1 City.......09-10 record: 15-6
5. Freedom HS, Bethlehem, PA......Lehigh Valley--12 Team League 4A (largest).....09-10 record: 16-9
6. Tottenville HS, Staten Island, NY......Class PSAL A......09-10 record: 11-10
7. School to be determined
One team dropped out of this bracket, so another team will fill that spot which has yet to be determined.
Portsmouth is guaranteed 3 games, and apparently play will be a tournament format, with winners of the first round advancing to play winners of the second round, etc.
Looks like virtually every school is quite larger than Portsmouth in classification, and many of the schools had good 09-10 seasons........Should be some good games for our Trojans.
Great idea by Coach Collins to challenge our kids to some very good out of state teams and at the same time give them a nice trip to Florida in December.

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
Info on the teams that I have been able to find online, looks like we got our work cut out for us.
Los Alamitos total enrollment, 3173 in grades 9-12. OHSAA divisional equivalent estimation 1,189 boys grades 9-11 easily OHSAA D1
The boys basketball team won CIF Division IA and IAA championships in 2006 and 2007, respectively.
Pace High School, total enrollment, 1800 in grades 9-12. OHSAA divisional equivalent estimation 675 boys grades 9-11 OHSAA D1.
Spanish River High School total enrollment 2105 in grades 9-12. OHSAA divisional equivalent estimation 789 boys grades 9-11 OHSAA D1.
James Garfield High School total enrollment 4620 in grades 9-12. OHSAA divisional equivalent estimation 1,733 boys grades 9-11 OHSAA D1.
Freedom High school total enrollment 2157 in grades 9-12. OHSAA divisional equivalent estimation 808 boys grades 9-11 OHSAA D1.
Tottenville High School total enrollment 3834 in grades 9-12. OHSAA divisional equivalent estimation 1437 boys grades 9-11 OHSAA D1.
Portsmouth has 204 boys grades 9-11 to be OHSAA D3.
Ohio school of similar enrollment include St Xavier( 1171) St Ignatius ( 1072) Mentor (1059) Lakota West( 1039) Hamilton(1003) Colerain High School( 846)
I don’t know if my figures are wrong or what but those enrollments seem out of sight. Very few schools in Ohio as big as some of those. Don’t mind playing good competition, but it seems ridiculous to put a school Portsmouth’s size in with schools this big. I have to guess this will really get are boys ready for the rest of the season. Have to assume this will be some of the best teams we will see all year.

Re: Portsmouth Trojans 2010-2011
TrojanFBAlum: Thanks for the info.......didn't look up the enrollment figures for each school, I just got the general classification from MaxPreps.......Portsmouth was originally in another bracket, probably with some smaller schools, but from my understanding of how the event is set up the coaches have to agree with who is in their bracket and can opt out if they want, and in this case there were several coaches who apparently didn't want to play Portsmouth, so we ended up moving to another bracket........in fact, in the bracket that the Trojans are now in, one school did drop out so there will be another school to take its place.
From your figures it does look like Portsmouth is by far the smallest school, but our kids want to be challenged........I am excited about the games that the Trojans will play in Florida.......I just hope that we play our best, whether we win or lose, and then like you said, take that experience into the rest of the season.
I know that we play at Chillicothe the first game after the Florida trip........that's a very tough 4 game stretch!!
