Ironton will have a solid team returning next year as they always do. The question will be how the chemistry of the team is handled. This was a nightmare year for the tigers with all the drama that took place. Coach Lafon needs to right the ship.

I am not sure, but I believe that in 1979 the Ironton Tigers beat the Pirates in the Sectional at Portsmouth. That was the year they also defeated Portsmouth in the District Finals when PHS was the defending state champions.

I do have Ironton as district champs in 1979, but I have no details. However, I found the following in my extremely incomplete Ironton basketball info:

This a legitimate question for Ironton or Burg posters and I'm not trying to start anything, just want to know the answer.

Does anyone know if Ironton has ever beaten Wheelersburg in the tourney? I know the Burg knocked them off in 1984 at Portsmouth when Todd Staker tapped in a last second miss at the buzzer and I know the Pirates won in 2006 when Gagai almost single handed kept the Tigers in the game. Have they ever played in the tourney other than those two games?

Played at least twice (76 and 77) other than those you mentioned with Ironton winning one (see previous post).

Thinking more about it----I am sure that Ironton beat Wheelersburg in 1979 at Portsmouth in the Sectionals. We went to the Convo to watch the Portsmouth vs Ironton game because we knew that after seeing Ironton beat Wheelersburg they were good enough to give the undefeated Trojans a game.

If they played in 1976 then the Burg won because they made it to the regionals finals that year losing to Wellsville after knocking off I believe top ranked Columbus St Charles. That the Burgs only loss that season.
