This one will come down to the defense and will be a close match-up between two good OVC teams. IMO, Chesapeake has several guys that are able to step it up on any given night and have been very under-estimated this year. Panthers win by 5.

Let's go Peake!!! 8)

Nice article on SP, Fairland and Peake and their success early on.

Pointers get early jump on conference
Jan 06, 2008 @ 11:58 PM
The Herald-Dispatch
HUNTINGTON -- South Point got a leg up on the rest of the Ohio Valley Conference by knocking off Fairland, 72-71, on Friday night behind 37 points from Todd Mayo and a basket by Beau Weed with two seconds remaining.

And while the Pointers celebrated on Fairland's home court following the win, they did not celebrate for long.

About 12 hours to be exact.

Preparation began Saturday afternoon for the Pointers' home clash with rival Chesapeake on Tuesday. After falling to Wheelersburg to open the season, the Panthers have rattled off eight straight wins, including Friday's 76-39 drubbing of Coal Grove.

The OVC race is going to be exciting this season with South Point, Chesapeake and Fairland each having one loss or less. South Point remains undefeated at 9-0 while Fairland is 9-1 and the Panthers 8-1.

Even though it is early, this could be a make-or-break week for the Panthers as they travel to South Point and turn around for another rival clash at home against Fairland on Friday.

UNBE-WEED-ABLE: If South Point's recent contests serve as any indication, Tuesday's clash with Chesapeake should be exciting.

While Todd Mayo has been on fire for the Pointers, it is Beau Weed that has been serving up daggers for South Point. The Pointers have gotten game-winning baskets by Weed in each of the last two games -- both layups on South Point's final possession.

TERRIFIC TANDEMS: Friday's Fairland-South Point matchup featured duos from each team that have been in the spotlight all season.

Weed and Mayo have been playing well for South Point, but just as solid are Fairland's Cole Hatfield and Michael Lamb.

Hatfield scored 17 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter on Friday night while Lamb added 16, including a steal and layup to give the Dragons the lead late.

Chesapeake also features Tyler Shoemaker and Kyle Webb. Shoemaker is scoring 20 points a game while Webb adds 13 for the Panthers.

Very exciting game. Game a lot closer than score indicates. SP hit shots when they needed to. Peake played a little out of their element but give SP credit, they had something to do with that. Heads up Panthers, it is time to focus on Friday's game against Fairland.

Mayo scores 33 as Pointers down Chesapeake
By: T. J. Layne

SOUTH POINT, OH-Coming off of two thrilling last second wins, the South Point Pointers faced another tough opponent in rival Chesapeake. With some road construction issues during Christmas break, this was the first game played in the new Pointer Gym in 2008 in front of a packed house.

The game started out all South Point as they were making shots and getting rebounds. At the end of the first quarter, the Pointers led 17-11 with a lot of those shots coming on the fast break in a fast paced quarter. Chesapeake came back firing strong in the second quarter as the game stayed a one possession game for most of the quarter. The first half ended with a 32-29 Pointer lead with Todd Mayo scoring 15 of those points.

The game continued tight all through the third quarter. Just like in the previous game against Fairland, Todd Mayo kept the Pointers lead secure as he exploded for 14 points in the quarter. The third quarter ended with an amazing, last second half court three from Chesapeake’s Tyler Shoemaker to cut the Pointers lead to only two points at 53-51. The fourth quarter started with both teams in a scoreless drought as the first minute and half of the quarter saw no points from either team. A Zach Woody three pointer ended the scoreless drought as from there the Pointers never looked back and won by a final score of 75-61.

Todd Mayo was the games leading scorer with 33 points while Beau Weed was second on Pointers scoring with 16 points. Zach Woody was third in South Point scoring with 8 points. South Point held the lead for the entire game to remain undefeated on the season at 10-0 overall and 4-0 in conference play. The South Point JV team had their unbeaten streak snapped as they lost 39-33.

The Pointers will be back in action in OVC conference play on Friday, January 11th against Rock Hill at the new Pointer Gym. The Lady Pointers will also be in conference play on Thursday, January 10th in a home game against River Valley. The Lady Pointers defeated the Lady Raiders 77-45 to get their first win on the year back on November 29th. Both games will see the JV game tip at 6:00 pm. Congrats to South Point on the win.. It's hard to beat a team that shot the way they did tonight.. South Point was 28-49 from the field.... Mayo was 13-19..............Chesapeake was 23-65 from the field........ very poor shooting, and a sub par performance. The Panthers need to get back on track Friday against Fairland.

Chesapeake will get their chance to redeem themselves at the next sp game at home. This is going to be an exciting season this year and on any given game night there could be an upset. So hang on.....FHS, CHS,and SP will all be close games. Lamb, Shoemaker, and Mayo wouldnt you like to see them all on the same team. 8)
