Div 3 Jackson Sectional Tourney Updates...
Re: 2010 Div 3 Sectional Tournament @ Jackson HS...WOW!
I really don't understand all the crying and bitching that goes on about tourny seeds.....if i am a decent team, my goal is to play for a district championship EVERY year.... so getting the #1,2,3,4,5,6 seeds means NOTHING- it might cause you to have to play one tougher game to get to your goal =A DISTRICT CHAMPIONSHIP....just play the games that you are dealt!! and trojandave...i agree that records are all that most coaches look at when they vote for seeds - but when the games are actually played, strength of schedule is what WINS most tournament games - your trojans from years past know ALL about that....and i wish everyone in the SE district would wise up to that fact!!!! Playing a TOUGH regular season schedule and losing a few games is NOT a bad way to IMPROVE your team. That is how you win districts, regionals, STATES!!

Piketon plays in the 6 non-league games. DII Hillsboro DII Mifflin, DIV Eastern, DII Waverly, DI/DII Zanesville, DII Vinton County. Pretty tough nonleague if you ask me.

Park down below and climb the hill...
Typical. Shouldn't have to pay to park, profit margin high enough on that food, I would think.

It will be interesting to see which of the 3 sectionals does the best in the district tournament.
Re: 2010 Div 3 Sectional Tournament @ Jackson HS...WOW!
bengalfan- i agree, that is a great non-conf for piketon! That is the kind of schedule that i was talking about teams should schedule to IMPROVE...they will lose a couple of those, but that experience will show in their tourny run!

Are you so tight that you cry about $2.00 parking once or twice a year? What about JHS fans that pay it every game? I have no problem with it. With the schools budget getting less and less every year for athletics, this is a way that they can try to avoid "Pay to Play" or even having sports cut all together. Jackson has great facilities and the intersection of 32 and 35 make it a great location to host tournament games and you can't charge parking for tournaments if you don't charge it all season. Get over it or walk the hill or don't show up at all.
As far as coaches just looking at records, I disagree Trojan Dave. The coaches place they're records on the board showing wins and losses by division. It makes a big difference if a DIII team has five losses and 4 of them are two DII or DI schools. It also makes a big difference when a DII school has a great record and has 7-8 wins against Div 3 and 4 schools. Coaches take all of that into consideration. But most coaches know going into the draw of who is "hot" and who is a bad match up for them and basically vote to avoid those teams to give them the best chance to advance. That's where the politics start. It would be nice if they made the draws like a public forum. It's interesting to watch it all unfold. I think every die hard basketball fan should get to see it at least once to fully understand the big picture.

Out of Bounds that is the way it should be,but I have to disagree Trojan Dave is right 16-4 beats 15-5,especially if that 15-5 team is hot,no matter who they played. It also helps to have your conference have the most teams in a particular sectional, thats the most important factor of all, they actually control the seedings, and that is a fact.

Out of Bounds: If coaches play "politics" with the seeding, as you have mentioned, then why do they look at records in the first place? I can say from past experience that the competition that Portsmouth has played down through the years didn't help them at all when it came to seeding.......I think that some coaches wanted to take the stance of "let's avoid Portsmouth due to the schedule they played" rather than give them some level of respect for that schedule.
Independent 2012 makes a good point.......the number of teams from a conference is a big factor in seeding.......I have heard this from a number of people.......
I can see it coming again this year at Jackson.......Portsmouth may end up 12-8 playing a double round robin in the SEOAL and yet will still have a hard time getting higher than a 5 seed.
One thing about the Trojans that has been consistent throughout the years in tournament play.........we are always a tough out, even with sub .500 teams, and probably will be even a tougher out this year. This is the best Trojan squad since 2002......we are 5-3 (after an 0-2 start) without one of our key players (starter) who will join the team Friday vs. Logan.

Whoa, parking charge for every game? Should be a tremendous athletic budget there.

I invite any leagues teams to Ripley,Eastern Brown or Fairfield any year to play the "WEAK" SHL.Georgetown makes out very well now that they are no longer in the SHL. Western Pike played well in the SHL;but, seems to have fared a little bit better now that they are not in the "Weak SHL".It seems any leagues teams that come to: Manchester,West Union,North Adams,White Oak,Peebles,Fayetteville or Lynchburg Clay find that it is no cakewalk. As for talent :remember Brian Grant(Xavier, and his long pro career) who played for Georgetown when they were in the Southern Hills League .He could probably attest that he learned alot while playing in the "weak SHL.The two Setty boys from Peebles who played on Mason County Kentucky's State Championship team (just imagine how good Peebles could have been had they stayed home with Justice and Seaman) . These two players may attest that they did indeed learn some pretty good skills while playing in the SHL.So come on down, play some games and pad your stats in the SHL. If you can.

Re: 2010 Div 3 Sectional Tournament @ Jackson HS...WOW!
As far as tournament success, the SHL has sent more teams to the state in the last decade than any other league in the SE District........and the league always seems to have at least 3-4 respectable teams.
But I do have to say that my Portsmouth Trojans came into last year's sectional final vs. 20-0 SHL champion North Adams as a dysfunctional, 10-12 ballclub and took the Green Devils to OT before losing 77-75......Portsmouth finished 3-10 in the SEOAL.......I still maintain that while the SEOAL is not a powerhouse conference in relation to the entire state, in the SE district it provides the best competition every week......especially now with the double round robin schedule that the league adopted this year.
But with Zanesville and Athens now gone, Ironton leaving after this year, and Marietta leaving the year after, the SEOAL will not be as strong as it has been.......but still quite competitive.

They look at records as who they have played, not necessarily what the end number is, it's more of how strong the schedule is. You are right about avoiding Portsmouth, especially last year. I know Dave Young being the number one seed last year, did NOT want to play Portsmouth.

Hope the Trojans can start winning some games to get a decent seed........based on the current records, Portsmouth could end up with a #7 seed.
Re: 2010 Div 3 Sectional Tournament @ Jackson HS...WOW!
the top 2 seeds in Athens are big! seed 3 plays jackson 2, seed 4 plays jackson 1. Going strictly by Pfloyd this week (realizing that won't happen) Zane Trace is 1, follwed by Belpre, Fairland, Alexander, Fed Hock, Nelsonville York. Hoping my Dragons can win some games and get a 2 seed.

Right now, unless there are some significant changes in records, I think Portsmouth will have to play Ironton, Oak Hill, or Chesapeake in the sectional final........I don't think the Trojans will be able to get a #4 or #5 seed unless they win out to the draw.......which would give them a 13-5 record.....and then that might not be good enough.......they do play Chesapeake the night before the draw.
