Don't we have a lot of young refs out there now?
Young meaning time as a ref---I thought I heard [in the last couple of years] there were a lot of older refs quiting

Do you people scream at the coaches as much as you scream at the refs? I mean when a coach makes a mistake do you scream at him? Do you scream at the players when they mess up? Do you scream at the AD when you think they hired a bad ref. How bout the cheerleading adviser when the cheerleaders do a bad cheer? When you do scream at a ref, and you are wrong would it be ok for someone, even the ref, to scream at you? Just wondering. I use to get on refs. Then one time a ref told me it wasnt him, but the way I was playing that was hurting my game. He was more explicit, and he got his point across. Since then I have left them alone.

Uh, just my two cents....These are kids playing a game they love. Let them be kids and stop acting like idiots. Chances are very good that not one of your kids will ever play pro ball so calm down and let them enjoy growing up. You ever think about how embarrased your kid gets when you are the crazed person yelling above everyone else and everyone turns to look at you? Cheer for your kid and be happy they are even healthy and talented enough to be on the court. Some kids dont have that luxury.

I like rers that go into games hopin they get to toss someone. You go against that crew and you wont last long I tell you that much. We take a poll before each game about who will toss someone first, and in what quarter. That is how games should be reffed.

Very well said. Most don't think before they act. If they could only see themselves. Even that wouldn't matter in some cases. It is a shame. Not a very good example for others to follow, especially kids.

A lot of times kids are glad their dad yelled at the refs. They feel like they are owed something. Most of the people who yell have no clue what they are yelling about. Like the one person said, it is advantage/disadvantage. Some people think every single violation should be called no matter what. They would be the first ones bitching about all the whistles and the 4 hour games though, you can bet on that.

This is my 3rd year of officiating. I can honestly say that I have never went into any game looking to throw someone out. As stated above, when there is a decent crowd we rarely can even make out or hear what the fans are yelling. It is when the small crowds are there that it seems you can hear everything said.
I love every minute of being out there on the court, but I can tell you that it is an entire different view from where we are standing as to setting in the crowd watching. Just my opinion, but I think it is much much easier to see the game from setting farther away in the stands.
We had a situation last night at a jr hi game where a fan was yelling at the top of his voice....But he was yelling at his sons teams coach for something or another. He & the coach had words after the game. I believe [not 100% as we went on to the locker room] that he was asked by ther AD to leave.
I see it all the time, some fans take this as way more than just a fun youthfull experience for student athletes & they do embaress the kids & take the fun out of it for them....

I remember a game-Glenwood @ Western 2 years ago. The cheerleaders had passed out these cups, supporting Western, and one of the fans took their cups and threw it at one of the refs. I know two of the refs names. I won't say their names but lets call them KD and KT. They stopped the game and yelled and asked who did it. In complete humor several different people said they threw it so KD and KT threw out the whole section! LOL. Glenwood lost that game but it was still very entertaining. KD and KT always find a way to throw somebody out.

Screaming at the officials usually insights the crowd. Sometimes it even insights the players. I can understand why some officials have a short fuse when being screamed at. Many officials have seen how that screaming leads to threats, and belligerance from the crowd. There really is no place for it. I have seen some officials who cave into such behavior, and end up giving the team with the screamers a lot of calls. I have also seen the other side in which other officials refuse to give that team any calls, and most definately do not call the 3 seconds, or what ever the fan is screaming about. Either way, it has an effect that is unfair to one team or the other. I like the idea of the ejected fans having to pay a fine. I bet that settles them down some.

scarlet_gray,
:-D That is correct in what happened!! Fans from the Western section threw a "koolie", "coolie" however you spell it and M&Ms at one of the officials (KD). His partner (KT) saw the section it came from but did not know for sure who threw these items. (KT) went to the section and asked who threw the items onto the floor, no one from that section wanted to rat out anyone so they (KD), (KT) threw 8-10 out of that section.
I (KT) have been doing games for 12 years and been averaging 40+ varsity games a year for the last 6 years. Last year I did 50 total games, regular season and tournament games. This year I have 54 games scheduled, regular season and tournament games. In my 12 years I have thrown out approximately 15 people and have t'd up approx. 6 coaches and 10 players. That is about a person a year thrown out, t'd up a coach every other year, and over a player a year. I don't think that is always finding a way to throw someone out!!!!!!!!!!! :122246
I know of many officials who have done all the above in one season. I know a few officials who have done that in 1/2 a year. Some people who show up and act like idiots deserve to be thrown out and t'd up. You can say what you want to most officials, but if cursing and cheating comes from fans mouths then look out!!!!!
Last thing, I know for a fact I should have t'd up many more coaches than I have!!! I was a coach and I allow a coach a lot more string to hang themselves than do others. My string is getting shorter though with many !!!!!!!!!!!!

My favorite thing to say when looking for a 3 second call was "It looks like a KOA campground in there!"

My favorite thing for a ref to say is, I'm not calling it tonight so you might as well quit screaming about it."

Swanker Pine wrote:LMAO. Theres usually 5 or so ejections during the JH tourney at webster. it gets heated when little Jimmy Junior gets fouled hard and it doesn't get called and his daddy gets into it. I remember when NW played at sw and the boy jumped the bench into the stands and they stopped the game. Now I know who and what they said that made him jump over the seats but I won't say that here. thats why they switched the benches around.. A NW fan got up and gave the bird to websters whole side shortly before that. It's always entertaining when someone gets thrown out.

I seem to remember a Peebles/South Webster game back in the day that was so bad that a huge(everyone in the gym) brawl broke out between each teams' fans. The officials turned the lights out in the gym to try to calm everyone down but it ended up making things worse, people were throwing blind punches at others from their own town.

When I was in highschool at Logan, i remember when our entire student section of about 70 kids, was kicked out of the gym. This was when Logan actually had an awesome, LOUD student section and we were livid and had to watch the game from the cafeteria on the local tv station. After we were forced to clear out, all the parents moved to where we had been standing and started doing some of our cheers. Now that was in experience i will never forget! ha

Never been tossed myself, but I remember going up to the MAC Championship in Detroit this year and see someone get tossed (mind you, it was by cops not a ref but still was awesome). Our mascot walks past this Central Michigan fan who has been jeering the cheerleaders all night and squirts water in his direction. The man throws his beer on the mascot (really stupid considering it costed 7 bucks for one) and gets kicked out. Needless to say us students gave him a warm farwell :).

Another story I remember, this one during the Southeast District tournament at the Convo. Logan Elm vs. Greenfield McClain, I can't remember if it was the year we beat Dante Jackson or not. Early in the game, Van Matre was getting into this woman refs ear and she gave him a technical on the spot. He didn't get ejected, but that was still awesome to see. Then again, maybe not that awesome because I think we got a Technical on us for the same reason.

We played tonight and wouldn't you know it one of the refs that dislike me worked the game and he eyeballed me when he first came in and as I went to my seat at the beginning of the second half. All I could do was think about this thread and laugh.
