Re: 3-17 (7:30 pm) Ironton vs Portsmouth (Regional Finals)
I know Dave will have this but I'm trying to remember some Portsmouth/Ironton tourney games form the past. I think there have been some great ones, just not that many. I don't think any Trojan fan could forget 1979. Possibly our best team losing in a District Championship. I also recall played at Shawnee State in an early round of 1988, that was too close for comfort for a Portsmouth team that was a heavy regional favorite. Any others?

That is awesome Trojandave! I'm very proud how Eugene Collins and his staff helped the program to return to glory. This will be the biggest Portsmouth vs Ironton game in the history of the rivalry. Best of Luck...hope to see the Trojans in Columbus again!trojandave wrote:A classic rivalry takes a new turn.........this will the first time in the history of the Ironton/Portsmouth series that the two schools have met in the regional final........after 145 games and over 100 years of competing against each other, the stakes for this game have never been higher.........A TRIP TO THE FINAL 4 AWAITS THE WINNER!!
This senior class at PHS has accomplished some great things on the hardwood in their careers:
1. Back to back 20 win seasons for the first time since 1990-91
2. First SEOAL title in 6 years of league play
3. A Final 4 in 2011 and currently an Elite 8 appearance
4. Two 1,000 point scorers in Wayne Evans and Dion McKinley
5. The 22 wins so far this season ties them for 3rd most all-time in a single year with the 1961, 1987, and 1991 teams
6. An overall record of 43-7 in 2011 and 2012 combined.
7. Currently have a winning streak of 19 games and had a 15 game winning streak last season.
Coach Eugene Collins is now 55-14 in just his 3rd year at PHS.
With 1 more win, Portsmouth High School will record its first back to back Final 4 appearances in school history, and will also move into 2nd place all-time by themselves for most state appearances with 15........out of 830 high schools.
GO TROJANS!! WE ARE VERY PROUD OF YOU!!

Goin' with I-town in the rubber match But have worries about Fletchers ankle. Will be an epic battle and I will watch it live. Man, I love this time of the year!!!!!!!!!
Re: 3-17 (7:30 pm) Ironton vs Portsmouth (Regional Finals)
JMHO Portsmouth beat the only team that could slow them down last Saturday night ! Ports going back to the SCHOTT and GOOD LUCK from this VALLEY FAN !!!!!
Re: 3-17 (7:30 pm) Ironton vs Portsmouth (Regional Finals)
If I remember correctly, I-town beat Portsmouth this year not long after beating LV. Ironton can win this game but they will have to play 4 quarters of basketball. They cannot come out flat like they did the first half against Coshocton. If they do it will be a long night.SOCMAN05 wrote:JMHO Portsmouth beat the only team that could slow them down last Saturday night ! If they play the way they are capable then I-town will be making another trip to C-bus.
Re: 3-17 (7:30 pm) Ironton vs Portsmouth (Regional Finals)
SCHOOLBOY....... I understand what you're saying however this isn't the first of the season and Itown is not healthy. Fletcher still looks a lil gimpy and you lost i think his name is White to acl-mcl not sure on the name . Carter will have to throw the team up on his shoulders to have a chance . However next year I dont see anyone standing in the way for ITOWN to play in the SCHOTT !
Re: 3-17 (7:30 pm) Ironton vs Portsmouth (Regional Finals)
It was Brown that was lost and you are right it is not the first of the season. Ironton only got beat by 6pts and now Portsmouth is somehow unbeatable. Thats amazing
I-town has 3 fantastic options on offense. Carter just happens to be the number one option. If Carter has an average game Ironton has a good chance. If he has a great game then next stop is C-bus.
I-towns only problem is that they start out slow. If they start out strong it could be a long night for Portsmouth.
If not it will be a long night for I-town.

Two teams that need no introduction. They meet each year and here recently the stakes are much higher. By now we all know the usual suspects. Portsmouth is lead by Dion Mckinely who scored 30 in their win over Chesapeake. Ironton is lead by Zac Carter who scored 21 in a win over Coshocton. These teams will definetly try to isolate both of these players, thats why the supporting cast must step up and show there is more to the team than their leaders.
Portsmouth State Final Four Appearances
1925, 1926, 1927, 1929, 1931 (1st), 1934 (2nd), 1939, 1941, 1961 (1st), 1978 (1st), 1980 (2nd), 1988 (1st), 1990 (2nd), & 2011[9]
Ironton Final Four Appearances
1994, 2005
I don’t think people forgot 2005 when Ironton almost knocked off OJ Mayo and Bill Walker’s North College Hill team in the State Final. This game will be such a good game. The series split during the season Ironton won the first meeting 66-52 and Portsmouth took the second game 59-53. Mckinley scored only 15 points combined in those 2 games. Wayne Evans picked up the slack averaging 21 a game vs Ironton. Carter and Fletcher averaged 20 points a piece against the Trojans this season. This is the game before the State the stakes are too high to not be ready. Good Luck to both teams.
Projected Starting Lineups
Portsmouth Trojans (22-2)
G Wayne Evans sr 6’0
G Len Collins sr 5’11
F Zaide Whitley sr 6’0
F Mason Jordan sr 6’2
C Dion Mckinely sr 6’5
Ironton Tigers (19-5)
G Josh Glover 5’11 jr
G Zac Carter 5’10 jr
F Nolan Johnson 6’2 sr
F Trevor White 6’4 jr
C Trey Fletcher 6’6 jr

Re: 3-17 (7:30 pm) Ironton vs Portsmouth (Regional Finals)
Even though Portsmouth and Ironton have met in the tournament quite a bit in their history, the two schools have actually played only twice in the tournament since 1989.........in 1996, the Fighting Tigers blasted the Trojans 96-61 in the opening round of the South Webster sectional, finishing a dismal 4-15 season for PHS........then in 2005, undefeated Ironton beat Portsmouth(6-15) 54-30 in the Jackson sectional.......the Fighting Tigers advanced all the way to the D3 state championship game before falling to North College Hill and OJ Mayo in a heartbreaker. Ironton finished 26-1 that year.
Here are a few select notes about the tournament history between the two:
Ironton eliminated Portsmouth from the tournament in 1968 and 1970.......both games were close, and the 1968 game marked the end of Coach George Heller's very fine career (225-137) at Portsmouth. Portsmouth beat Ironton in 1978 at the Valley sectional en route to the Class AA state title, then in 1979 came one of toughest defeats to swallow for Trojan fans as the Fighting Tigers ended Portsmouth's 29 game winning streak with a 54-52 win in the district final.
The two schools did not play each other in the tournament from 1971-1977 due to being in different classes.......PHS was a AAA school during that time while Ironton was in Class AA.
In 1988, Portsmouth was down 52-44 at the Shawnee State sectional with just under 5 minutes to play, but the Trojans rallied behind Patrick Tubbs' 13 points down the stretch, and PHS pulled out a 59-56 win........Portsmouth went on to win the very first D2 state title that year.........in 1989 at South Webster, Daryl Lisath's 3 pointer at the buzzer in regulation sent the Trojans and Tigers into OT, where eventually PHS won in 2OT 63-55.
Portsmouth and Ironton have NEVER met beyond the district, so this is a groundbreaking moment in the history of this great rivalry..........7:30 Saturday night, Portsmouth vs. Ironton, regional final, winner to the Final 4.......does it really get any better than this?
I just want to hear Lou (basketball thirty) Horvath say one more time, "And the nets belong to the Trojans"..........GO TROJANS!!
