Do you think V.C. being the top dog in basketball has hurt there numbers in football and baseball because lets face it they stink in both.

And the one man crusade continues. This will be my only comment on this situation, I have absolutely no dog in this "fight".

Fact is that the board messed up and got directly involved with athletics. The decision was made by administration not to rehire the coach and the board did not listen to the recommendation.

Last time I checked, board members are elected by the people ... If such a problem exists - why are they still there? People can complain, have shirts made up and create petitions all they want ... But as long as least 51% of your polulation sees it a different way - there isn't much you can do.

It seems everyone I have talked to (Spartan fans at baseball games, former Alexander players at the rec center, a few other coaches in the TVC - all like coach Gabriel and think he's doing a great job) ... I guess it all depends on who you talk too.

What is his teams record at the Convo like 1-10? Product of a weaker conference and even softer sectional.

So does anybody know for sure if the board has indeed hired him?

I know that coach Gabriel raises money all year long and spends alot of his personal time doing so. He then takes his players all over Ohio to play schools and try to get the kids better. He spends all that fundraising money back to the kids. He does this for the first month of every summer. Tell me another coach that does this every single year. So kids all have the opportunity to get better in the off season. But with kids these days they have video games, parties, and others sports to take their mind off of basketball. The coach can only do so much. So that's why the attendance have been low. And as far as I know he is like 4 wins short of having the most wins in a coaching career at Alexander. So he must be doing something right.

Other coaches do not do that because they are busy actually coaching the kids during the eummer instead of taking the kids out to eat.

And yes he is close to the all time wins accomplishment. Pretty tall feat even though the man has averaged less than double digit wins per year during his tenure.

Coaching kids during the summer? You are saying the coach should be breaking the rules

GWA. Big difference between kids playing together for 10 days during a summer and their being 10 coaching days during a summer.

Catsanddogs:
How do you know that all the others just do nothing but coaching and that Gabriel is the only one to not coach over summer. Are you at every shootout in the state of Ohio? And doea a coach not suppose to let tue players bond either. I'm confused on how you know what every coach does down to every detail

Other programs are getting better Teddy! Alexander's is not. Not sure what else coaches are doing, but I do know what Gabriel is doing and it must not be working.

Down at the rec center yesterday - I watched 5 Athens players playing, shooting and trying to get better ... There was no coach around.

At some point it has to be up to the players to improve their game.

maybe that is why Athens dominates everything in the TVC then. Has nothing to do with the size

If were talking hoops ... Change the word 'Athens' - to 'Vinton County'.

93 Bulldogg,

I fully expect Teddy to be removed from SEOP's for outing my identity. That is clearly against the rules.

I deleted the post and sent out a PM explaining the rules a little.

Sorry - I got involved with some football stuff and I'm still doing baseball - I didn't check the basketball forum for a few days.

As i heard, that mr.collum(superintendent) did recommend him. so i am not sure where you got your information. And i apologize for bringing out your identity. It was wrong of me and i apologize deeply

I have talked to previous players and they all have told me that he does coach over the summer. But he also does take them out to eat and other activities on the down time. They told me that it kept them interested in going. They also pointed out that it was team bonding. They were exposed to colleges in other parts of ohio which was a big plus as they said. Im pretty sure 5 or 6 players in the last 10 years have went on to play college ball. As you know you do not get any exposure by just playing in southeast ohio. Not many schools if any can say they sent that many kids to keep playing college ball. They also said that they were playing other sports like baseball during the summer. And that gabriel asked them to make it to atleast one shootout during the summer and he was very reasonable when they did miss to go to other sport. They contined by saying that he encourages the kids to play as many sports as they can during their hs years. So i feel like he does a great job by giving the kids oppurtunities that others may not give them. The games that i saw i seen that all his kids are groomed and dressed in suits so you know there is discpline there. Thats a big thing in highschools these days. Yes he may have a few dissapointing seasons but he also had some of the best years at alexander. So in my opinion he is a great coach and any school would be happy to have him as there coach
