Waverly had a 10 point lead after three qtrs. Couldn't hit a free throw to save themselves: 15-31 for the night. Free throws are part of the game, but Waverly dominated the second half. Southworth's absence had to hurt and Waverly will hear that forever. Brush sat out a lot the first half due to foul trouble. Officiating was terrible for both sides. Sometimes when you get older you need to give it up. The one ref seemed like he was part of the show, or at least wanted to be.

Waverly was the better team tonight.
Piketon could not buy a basket through 3 1/2 qtrs.
Shooting 33% for the night.
Waverly did an outstanding job on the Boards.

Redstreaks set your eyes on the next prize. SVC

Congratulations to Waverly a hard fought win. Coming from a Piketon fan Southworth not there is not my reason we lost it was because in my opinion Waverly wanted it more at the end. So to all of the Waverly fans you will not here it from me that the reason we lost was because Southworth was not there and I'm not going to say would of could of because he was not there and we will never know. So congratulations to the Waverly Tigers.

Well, to add my take to this thread... this was a great game between two really good teams! we didnt shoot well, but again still had a chance to win. The score was 50-48. If Vulgamore makes the open 3 at the end, we may be celebrating in the village...but he didn't, and we lost by two..So, no excuses...Piketon missed many, MANY chip shots, and missed several key free throws themselves...We will learn from this, and grow from it. Congrats to Waverly and Coach Robertson.

As for the crowd, I've never seen that many people in that gym, EVER! Wow, that was like playing at the Schott! (not really) but the closest thing you'll see to it in a regular season high school game! Everyone got their money's worth!

Piketon lead 7-5 after one.
Waverly lead 19-18 at halftime
Waverly lead 36-26 after three.

Waverly was up 12 at the 7:25 mark (38-26) and 8 with 3:33 to play at 44-36 when Moore hit a trifecta for the Streaks.

Lewis hit a 3 with 3:00 to go to cut the lead to 5 at 44-39.

Waverly started missing crucial FT's with under 2 minutes to play.

After 2 missed FT's Vulgamore scored with 1:20 to play to make it a 3 point Waverly lead at 44-41.

Roback hit 1-2 FT's with .59 to play and Legg followed with 2-2 with .52 to play to make it 45-43.

Kretzer hit 1-2 with .45 to play followed by Leggs 1-2 with .39 to play to make it 46-44.

Two missed FT"s by Waverly with .34 to play opened the door for the Steaks but they could not convert on their end.

Kretzer hit 2-2 with .16 to play followed with a bucket by Lewis with 9.8 to play to make it 48-46. Piketon called their last time out after that bucket.

Kelly, with ice water in his veins stepped to the line and knocked down 2 FT's with 8.4 to play to make it a 4 point Tiger lead at 50-46.

Piketon's Lewis scored with under .5 to play and Waverly watched the clock run out.

The Tigers missed 8 FT's in the 4th, two being the front end of one and one.

WAVERLY SCORING:
Kretzer 18 (16 2nd half, 5 FT's in the 4th, two FT's with .16 to play)
Martin 12
Roback 7
Malone 6
Remy 3
Kelly 4 (two crucial FT's with 8.4 to play)

PIKETON SCORING:
Legg 16 (11 2nd half)
Lewis 11
Vulgamore 9
Helton 5
Moore 5
Braniff 2

soccerfix,
Every game I have seen the head official work he has been that way. He wants to be the show and let eveyone know who is boss. Some pretty poor calls both ways tonight but there wasn't a game changing blown call.
Does anyone know the actual rule on slapping the backboard? The official said it didn't alter the shot but T'd him up anyway. I have seen many people slap the glass and nothing is called.

Slap the back board Tech foul.
The officials did not determine the outcome of this game.
Thought they missed several key calls. Block on Legg was a charge by Martin.
They let these kids play football for 12 minutes in the second half and decided to call ticky tack stuff with 4 minutes to go.

Very sloppy High School game but exciting none the less.

bengalfan76 I agree that the Legg foul was a charge. The officials were not consistent. My partial opinion was Brush had four fouls to get his first two and 6 to get 3. The entire 2nd qtr Brush was on the bench and Waverly didn't try to go inside. I stated earlier that Waverly dominated the second half but couldn't hit a foul shot, anybody that gets beaten by two won't think they're being dominated but most of Piketon's faithful had to be puckered up being down by twelve with 7 minutes to go.

Waverly had a chance to Blow that thing open. If they are going to have a good run they need to get a killer instinct.
Piketon was a wide open 3 by Vulgamore and an put back from Brush from stealing a game in the Hawhee.
I also think Robak had at least two other fouls in the first qtr.
Twice Legg was slammed to the floor after his shot was blocked.
The Refs were following the flight of the ball instead of watching contact.
I agree poorly officiated game that went both ways

Seems like they were quick enough. I just wish they could hit foul shots.

Congrat to the Tigers on winning the Classic. Very good...physical defense played tonight. Legg looked very worn down by the physical play. Roback more than neutralized Brush.

Congrats to the Eagles on winning the consolation game. It is always difficyult to be "pumped" to be playing for 3rd place. I thought they played very poor in spots (especially help defense). But, take the win. 4-1 is better than many thought possible after the loss of Osborne and Helton to graduation.

Good luck the rest of the season to all the Pike County schools. Wouldn't it be great if Pike County represented the District in D2 (Waverly), D3 (Piketon), and D4 (Eastern)!

As Coach Kelley said, "Everyone got their money's worth"!

"A player shall not while a try or tap is in flight or is touching the backboard or is in the basket or in the cylinder above the basket, intentionally slap or strike the backboard or cause the ring to vibrate". - Player Technical

Roback played a heck of a game. He had a ton of rebounds and altered numerous shots. Kevin Malone is getting better every game and playing with confidence. He hit some key shots. Kelley gets a lot of credit for stepping up and hitting two critical foul shots with seconds remaining in the game.

James Lewis continues to amaze. He is not only quick and fast he's quit a talent. I believe he made the all tournament team. Legg is exceptional as well. Piketon will be fine and will continue to improve. Pike County would love to see another SVC Championship and tournament run!

No excuses here...I thought Waverly had a chance to put the game away and Piketon had a chance to steal the game away. I like the defense Piketon was playing in the first half, some kind of gimmick defense, that held Waverly to 19 points, on the other hand I was surprised how well Waverly handled Piketon's four guard offense, it seems the Streaks got very little dribble penetration. Good game....as for the officials...it's just a tough game to call...nobody wanted it to be a free throw contest...I like seeing two teams going at it! Streaks will be fine come tournament time, I'm sure these losses will hurt them in the seeding, but it could work to their advantage as well. Still have a lot of ball to play!
