tjfred, good luck arguing with John. I don't think he's ever lost an argument even if you prove he's wrong. Should have been on a debating team.

i recently talked to a friend of mine from pike county and we were discussing the big debate on the size of the gyms and who has the biggest one(still talking about gyms). he made a pretty strong point on why there is such a strong debate going on and his answer was, "there just aren't too many people in pike county that can count that high."

now that's funny, i don't care who you are.

I wasn't sure if I was arguing this with Tfred of Freddy! Of course Freddy knows I am better at math than him and he would just say, OK John, I guess you are right. I don't care what you have read in the paper or a program. There never were 3000 seats in that place do you think it has shrunk?

Sparky, your comment isn't funny, it is a bit degrading and out of line.

Sad part is in must be true! LOL!!!!!!!!

I got your back big guy.lol
As people have widened over the decades no way does that place hold 3000
Heck the place was packed and only 1800 paid attendence as quoted by the AD.
$9,000 gate is pretty nice.lol

Sounds like you lost the other side of the biggest one.

just for the record the place has shrunk down seat wise bc of what they have added to the gym guys i wish coach hawhee was here to say his piece about the gym. why would the papers say what they did then fellows and why would the OHSAA want to bring the CLASS A DISTRICT tourney here instead of chillicothe when chillicothe holds 2400 seats. that article said the exact seating capacity was 3125. how did they get that number. it did hold 3000 and just bc they sold 1800 tickets to the classic this yr doesnt mean the gym doesnt hold 3000, that place was not near full that night, good crowd but not near full. i was at the gallipolis waverly title game in 73-74 and the crowd was unbelievable. i get sick of people thinking they are right all the time well your wrong and you will never convince me otherwise.i know more than you think fellows and you are wrong

why dont you look up the programs and the news articles and maybe you can tell me why they have the numbers they said. i played for coach hawee and he told us how big it was ands how many people the gym held. calling him a wrong too i guess. some people have to be right about everything i guess.

I didn't count the rows last night but someone else did and they said there are 21 rows on each side. 13 at the top and 8 on the bottom.

You guys can argue about how many people it holds all you want, it doesn't change that FACT that the downtown arena is the best basketball facility around. Regardless of what other gyms say they hold (Piketon for example), they cannot hold as much as Hawhee's Palace.

I will explain the number 3150 to you. The gym is 100 feet long, if the bleachers ran wall to wall and there were no aisles or voids that would be 75 16inch seats. Multiply that by 42 rows and you get 3150.
Even back then the teams sat on the first row and there was a scorer table and radio and such. So there were never that many "seats" Take away the aisle and ends of bleachers and that shows there aren't that many actual seats and never were. But go on believing what ever you want.

In reality each row hold 60 seats and 60 times 42 is 2520

big john i want to apologize for getting a little bent out of shape over this gym deal, no harm intended sometimes i let my feathers get ruffled too much over nothing so i am sorry for that. i did some research sat and i have several articles on the new gym i will send you copies and thats where i am leaving this a done deal ok. i even found out something i didn't know while researching, the gym length is 90 ft by 50 ft. i thot it was 84ft. oh well, like i said it was built when i was 11 and it is a very special gym. but the actual seats was listed at 3125. like you said not that big of a deal and again i am sorry for getting stirred up.

I hate to bring this topic back up, but I was just in Piketons gym setting it up for tonights game and I thought, I wonder how many it would hold! The bottom bleachers are 90' long, or a 1080" inches. There are 14 rows on the home side, 8 on the visitors. On the visitors side mezzanine there are 12 rows also 90' or 1080". This means 34 rows times 1080 inches which equals 36720 total inches. Divide this by 18" per seat, gives us 2040 seats. Now subtract the three stairs, which are 3' wide on all sides. This subtracts 204 seats. Now the home side mezzanine is only 66' long by 12 rows high. This means 66 feet times 12 inches for 792 inches per row, divided by 18' per seat for 44 seats per row times 12 rows equals 528. Now subtract 48 seats for stairs gives us 480 seats upper home side mezzanine.

2040 minus 204 equals 1836 plus 480 seats gives us approximately 2316 seats. Now I used an 18' wide bottom sized estimate! lol John above used 16', so it might be a little closer, but Piketons gym isnt dwarfed by Waverlys, but I will argue anyone that says its as big or bigger! lol

we could turn this into an algebra problem. so we have come to the conclusion that it will hold 2520 skinny people or 1680 fat people, so if half of the people are fat and half are skinny there would be a crowd of 2100 there. what would be the average number of fat and skinny people to reach capacity? or another pertinent question could be,what was the name of the person selling tickets that night?
