I forgot to ask about the Sciotoville East game Tuesday, but here are the results at Cedarville from Thursday and Friday...........

Thursday

Lucasville Valley 51, Portsmouth 50 OT
Portsmouth 72, Germantown Valley View 43
Fairland 59, Portsmouth 55

Friday

Washington CH 60, Portsmouth 57 OT
Portsmouth 50, Middletown Christian 44
Dayton Christian 55, Portsmouth 42
Heath 64, Portsmouth 52
Portsmouth 45, Emmanuel Christian 43

Overall summary: Portsmouth had their starting 5 on Thursday and most of Friday, but Forrest Johnson played a limited amount on Friday with a sore elbow. The Trojans at times played inspired and at other times didn't.........it is just hard for the kids to play intense all the time....it is summer basketball........in the case of Valley, they beat the Indians handily at the Burg Summer League, but just didn't look that interested this time around.......but I give Valley credit because they had some kids step up and make plays.......in the Fairland game, PHS had a 55-48 lead with 2 minutes left but the Dragons scored the last 11 points. Dayton Christian was the best team that we played, tied at the half 25-25, and Heath was good also, although Portsmouth did not play with Cadogen, Link, Johnson, and Allison in that game.

Patrick Underwood and Tre Underwood have proven to be pleasant surprises and will help our bench......Patrick will be a 6-2 junior and Tre a 6-2 sophomore.

The biggest difference between summer ball and the regular season is the intensity level........playing 3-5 games in one day is far different than 1 game in the regular season..........in addition it is virtually impossible to have your regular group for every game due to other committments........and that's why their summer record doesn't mean that much to me. I think it is just important for the kids to get out and play.......and they are playing a LOT of basketball.

As one coach told Coach Shoemaker, what happens at Cedarville won't mean ANYTHING when December comes.........

JV Results from Cedarville..........

Thursday

Portsmouth 33, Mansfield Christian 20
Portsmouth 38, Dayton Christian 34
Portsmouth 25, Fredricktown 22

Friday

Portsmouth 29, Emmanuel Christian 6
Fairland 54, Portsmouth 17
Portsmouth 35, Fairland 22
Washington CH 43, Portsmouth 21

Overall summary: Portsmouth was playing really a freshman team vs. the other schools JV teams.........the only sophomore that played was Tre Underwood........our kids accounted for themselves well..........the first Fairland score was the Dragons' JV squad, the second was their freshman team.............

Both the varsity and JV(freshman) squads have a game or two today......if I find out the scores, I will post them..............

A slight change of the summer schedule.......next weekend, the Trojans will travel to the Rio Grande Shootout on Saturday, beginning around 8-9 AM, then will play Africentric the following Friday in Columbus, and then will head to Akron the next day to play at the Univ. of Akron Shootout.

So far the standout player has been Anthony Williams, the most improved has been Corey Allison, the most pleasant suprises have been Patrick Underwood and Tre Underwood.

Andrew Bendolph had about 35 points in the game vs. Heath.......he looked like a first team All-State player..........he looked outstanding all day Friday, while Williams has played well in every game. He has been attacking the glass offensively and defensively........he also added several thunder dunks, along with Allison.

Dave thanks for the updates.....man I am gettting ready for this season things sound as if they are going really good...also when regular seasoin gets here we can add Jacob Stevens to the team, he doesnt score a lot, but helps us in many other ways.

the great thing I knoticed about all the scores you posted, we are competitive in every single game, even against some pretty good teams.

biggdowgg: We were competitive in every game, and you and I know the talent is there..........what's really encouraging is the development of the 2 Underwood kids, and like you said, with Jacob Stevens added to this group, our bench is much stronger than I first thought......which will be important against the better teams on our schedule.

Looks like the Trojans will be shorthanded at the Rio Grande Shootout........some kids have out of town committments with family and other things.......but I am still looking forward to seeing the kids compete. Found out that freshman Dion McKinley played in the Wheelersburg Summer League vs. Rock Hill.........and accounted for himself well. James Lawson has joined the team this week......that is very good to hear because he can help the varsity at the point guard position. I believe the Trojans were down several players and played RH to about a tie in quarters........

I believe Dion is going to play at Rio Grande.......I hope he does show because I want to see him first hand.......I have heard a lot about his offensive ability. I would say Dion will probably be brought up to JV next season if he puts in the time..........

Due to so many player committments for other things, Portsmouth has cancelled its trip to Akron next weekend. They will not play Africentric next Friday but instead are planning on playing them in a preseason scrimmage in November.

Open gyms will continue until the middle of July........and there could possibly be a shootout next Thursday at PHS if enough teams show interest..........

Hard to believe that Ohio University cancelled its shootout for lack of interest......they couldn't get enough teams interested.......Portsmouth at one point had expressed interest in playing.

trojandave: the OU Shootout cancellation could have something to do with Tim O'Shea just leaving for another job. Considering he spent every offseason shopping his name for an East Coast job, I think OU will be better off in the long run. This was the same guy who after seeing Cam Thoroughman and Nick Aldridge play at the Convo said they were a "dime-a-dozen" and did not recruit them. Well, if they're good enough for West Virginia and Cincinnati, they were definitely good enough for OU.

As for the Trojans, sounds like they got some things accomplished over the summer and should be ready to go when football season winds down. I'm excited to hear about McKinley's progress over the next season...great name throughout the years for PHS basketball.*

Art: I agree with you 100% on Tim O'Shea. As a OU alumnus, I felt the program was going nowhere with him. The Bobcats will be better off with a new coach......hopefully they will go out and hire a coach who can evaluate talent.......about any coach knows X's and O's........we need someone who can identify who the really good players are in which OU has a chance to get.

I am happy overall with the summer basketball of the Trojans.......participation numbers have been good, even though at times there have been some missing varsity players.......that's to be expected at this time of the year. For the first time under Coach Shoemaker he was able to take a JV squad to Cedarville and Rio Grande.........they had some struggles, but it was just important for them to get out and play........and they will get better with time........playing is the key.........

Consistent play is probably the biggest problem you will see during summer play.......not everybody there, 3-5 games a day, kids waiting 1-2 hours to play......and they are kids. Their attention span doesn't hold for that long. But still I am happy that so many kids came out and participated. It's one step in bringing our program back........and when the varsity has been together this summer, they showed they can play some good basketball.

The final shootout of the summer for the Trojans took place at Rio Grande yesterday........Portsmouth only had 5 players, and were missing 2 starters.....but still only lost 3 games by a total of 10 points.

Zane Trace 53, Portsmouth 50
Eastern Brown 40, Portsmouth 34
Portsmouth 55, Manchester 42
Waverly 48, Portsmouth 47

Overall, despite being severely shorthanded, the Trojans accounted for themselves well........but with no subs, fatigue was a factor, no doubt.

The Portsmouth JV had a rough day, but they were comprised of mostly freshmen, and they had a good number of kids show up. So it was positive from that standpoint.......but the kids have skill work to do.

Overall for the summer, I was happy to see about 15 kids participate in varsity basketball. Of the shootous that I attended, Andrew Bendolph, Forrest Johnson, and Nate Cadogen were at every one, while Anthony Williams, Corey Allison, Zack Link, and Nick Nelson were at multiple shootouts.......and James Lawson made a good showing yesterday at Rio.

From what I saw of when our varsity was together, starters and a few bench players, the Trojans proved they can play some very good basketball at both ends of the court.........now if these kids can just do that when the regular season starts, we will be very good.........

Portsmouth will continue to have open gyms until the middle of July, and also continue play in the Wheelersburg Summer League. Coach Shoemaker and his staff are doing everything they can to provide opportunities for the kids to play, and for the most part, they have taken advantage of it. It's been a good summer for the basketball Trojans.

jumper: Right now, I think there's going to be a shootout next Thursday, but I am not certain. Coach Shoemaker is still trying to get enough teams to participate.....he would like to have about 6 teams or so..........so I really can't confirm at this time whether it will go ahead or not. I know that the following day the scrimmage with Africentric has been cancelled along with next Saturday's shootout at Akron. Right now the Trojans are shorthanded, and it showed yesterday at Rio Grande.
