Re: I think I speak for all Oaks fans when I say this....
No school system in the Southeast District has been hurt more by transfers than Vinton County. As a life long Vinton County resident, I am opposed to transferring for athletic purposes. I have no problem with parents moving, in fact we lost a very good middle linebacker this season to Logan Elm. His parents found and bought a house in the Logan Elm school district and they moved. Now as I hear it, the boy is the starting middle linebacker for the Braves. That is great!!! And good for him, I wish him nothing but the best. However, we currently have at least six kids that continue to live within the school district (which is the entire county) that attend other schools for athletic purposes. There lies the problem.
Re: I think I speak for all Oaks fans when I say this....
Ok Ok, I see everyone complaining about people transfering from one school to another. But if I recall the true team would be South Webster who in 2004 state run there was no transfers on the team and in 2005 when they got beat by a tough private school there were no transfers, and when they won state there was only one transfer that came in. And the 04 webster team would have killed the 09 oaks.
Re: I think I speak for all Oaks fans when I say this....
Wow! Here is a crazy thought... since we are all open to open enrollment and/or recruiting bb players, why don't we just allow red shirting our athletes so that we can load our teams up even more? Hmmmm? Ooops, sorry, I forgot we actually do that now don't we? It's called keeping our kid back a year in the 8th grade (supposedly to give them a chance to mature or catch up on his academic standing...or some other crap excuse). If you people want to justify recruitment as a way to better compete at the state level then you might want to think of some other easy ways to build your program/s also. No matter how you look at it, the game of high school basketball looses its purity. I promise you that in the long run it will do more damage than good to basketball programs and those kids that have poured their hearts into playing just to watch transfers come in and take their places.
As for myself... I want a one year ineligibility rule for in or out of state transfers and a one year loss of playing eligibilty for a student held back in school! Enough is enough. Wow, I need a sedative, haha

I agree! With The Addition of Two Players Who were At Another School in The Middle of Summer With No Coach, No open gyms, No Summer Team camps or Workouts and The Aspirations of playing at The Next level, I Feel The Oaks Should Have Probably Been At Least D1 or Maybe NAIA. What a Travesty!

Re: I think I speak for all Oaks fans when I say this....
For the most part, if you think about it, the Oaks state champ victory did not come from their transfers, but from their home grown boys (the Hale boys). Sure the Bordon kid got lucky, but to be honest he showed his true colors by already quitting at Rio. But for the Oak fans they should be proud of their team, because it was not the transfers that made that game or won it but their very own.
They suffer a great loss by graduating senior JD Hale, that is a spot will be very hard to fill. I think the Oaks will win the SOC II once again, with some push from a vengful burg team, but I think the Oaks are still the better team in the SOC at the moment. I am calling that they will make the Regional Finals. This comes from a guy not from Oak Hill.

Wally,
Pretty classy knocking and attempting to degrade a kid who choses academics over basketball at this point in his life. Sounds like maybe you did not make that decision if you even had the chance to do so?
All those kids on the team did deliver at key moments throughout the tournament. The "home grown" boys as you called them and the (two) that transferred 2 years ago. That is what teams do and Oak Hill is proud of all of them. JD will be tough to replace no doubt, but Drew Cannon will hold his own.
Luckily Ryan Borden has a state championship medal, a state championship ring and a state championship game MVP medal to always remind him of how lucky he was.

I understand the idea of transferring to a school for athletics to open up opportunities for college, or to be on a program that will go places. But this thread started from an Oak Hill person sarcastically saying Wheelersburg Trojans because of the burgs recent move it. These threads are filled with people complaining about "this team was only good because of kids not from their school" and so forth. And you are right teams do that, that is where we mix up with our priorities. IF I remember there was a time when Oak Hill Lady Oaks had shirt that said "Home Grown" to trash on a Webster girls team fill with transfers because of a coach that was looking for W more than building a Student Athletic program for that school district.
I attempted to build up the fact that Oak Hill born and raised athletes were the success of that state team, and would have been good with out their transfers. Because most of what i hear on here and out that the Oaks could not do anything without them and thats the only reason they were good because oak hill recruited. I was pointing out the fact that was not so, and I am sorry that i upset some by simply stating a fact.
As for the Jackson native bordon, he was a good play... at the DIV level. Which is great, and I am happy for the rewards that he received.
As for transfers, you know its what teams do right, but is it right. Is it right for a kid to come in and take the place of another kids playing time, a kid who has built up from years for that school, to ride the bench to a better player who selfishly only transfered for a status upgrade, or to be noticed. Its hard to say, and that was harsh, because I also see nothing wrong with a kid transferring to a better chance of success. Let me say that again so people UNDERSTAND IT:I also see nothing wrong with a kid transferring to a better chance of success. Because I know if a schools program was terrible and a kid with the skills could shine somewhere else, what do you do? What do you do as a coach? How do you respect players who has given their lives to that district, to see playing time only in the final seconds of a major win or a major loss? This issue of transfers will never be solved, there will always be away around it, and there will always be people who get hurt on both sides of the argument.

Great post, wolley. Transfers will always be a problem and a huge help at the same time. It just depends on how u look at the situation. In our case, it helped win a state championship but at the expense of what Oak-natives playing time?

Did you not go to any of the tournament games and see the big threes he knocked down? I think someone might be jealous.

He was just saying that Westen and JD played great games as well. So did Jesse. He saved the pass out of bounds which lead to Borden making the shot. Did you watch the game? Westen kept them in the game the entire time. If it wasnt for him then Borden wouldnt have been able to make the shot. But dont think Im saying he's the only reason they won. It took a team effort and everybody pulled together for the win.

Re: I think I speak for all Oaks fans when I say this....
Bottom line: Transfers always "potentially" help the school that gains the player and always hurts the school that lost the player. In our area, 2 area schools have won state titles due in part to the addition of players from other schools (Oak Hill and S. Webster) and The Burg gets players from all over the county (that are attracted to their winning tradition). Burg usually gets them in junior high causing less talk about it by the time the players hit high school. Transfers have devastated Eastern over the years....
