I think it's great that Clay is getting some hype this year. In the past few years no one has expected them to do much, and they lived up to that low expectation. I think this season, they feel they can win most of their games and that extra confidence should give them a boost in their effort on the floor.
I agree the harder schedule to start is designed to help them get better, but it can also be detremental if you keep getting pounded, resulting in trying too hard to compete, which can lead to injuries. You have to wonder why all the larger schools schedule Clay, if playing much bigger programs is "good" for your development.

I heard that 12 players made the Clay Varsity Team and I know I am missing one and I can't figure out who it is...but this looks like a good line up so far. Can't wait to watch them play this year.

Wonder why Clay doesnt scrimmage someone like New Boston or Valley? ( teams close by ) It has to be expensive for the school to travel that far and very time consuming. Also, the kids have to get up so early on Sat. and I don't any teens who get enough sleep. Hope the coach is making the right decisions for the team.

Why would they scrimmage teams they play? b/c they play NB twice any ways so that would be dumb and the reason most coaches do that is so they can run all their plays and not worry about people knowing what they are going to do

Should be a good scrimmage. This will be the first basketball action that SG's new gymnasium will see.

ClayPantherfan, I see your point.. I guess If someone did want to know our plays they would be less likely to dirve to S. Gallia to scout us but it still seems like an expensive trip as well as tiresome. For all you tired teens...You are not alone... Here is something that I found on Google.

" A recent study of 3,120 Rhode Island teenagers conducted by Carskadon and Amy Wolfson, assistant professor of psychology at The College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass., found that 85 percent of teens were chronically sleep-deprived and accumulated a minimum 10-hour sleep deficit during the week. Forty percent went to bed after 11 p.m.; 26 percent said they usually got less than 6.5 hours on school nights".

"Almost all high school and college students do not get enough sleep," states Dr. William C. Dement, director of the Sleep Disorders Center at Stanford University. "They are at risk for a number of serious consequences, including poor performance at school, increased incidence of automobile accidents, increased moodiness, and increased use of stimulants and alcohol."

Just a note from an old person who knows......Get plenty of rest this year , despite the fact that you have to get up in wee hours of the morning to drive 2 hours to play a scrimmage on Sat. with a bigger team. Ask your coach to go for afternoon scrimmages. I bet it would be more fun and he would have a better performance with less room for injuries and mistakes.

Doc P, I think waterdog has a point. Not so much that they should scrimmage teams in our league, but they should stay with schools our size. I see no reason to scrimmage Jackson, who are two divisions bigger than Clay at 304 boys, the day after the previews where they play Waverly (+-250).
Plus, I think if you ask the boys, they would all rather play at 2pm on Saturday instead of 10 am.

My2cents,

This statement really shows what is wrong with Clay basketball. Your players need to play when the coach schedules the game and not whine about getting up early ;-)

Eagle, I don't know that the players are whining and I don't know that anything is actually "wrong" with Clay basketball, other than the fact that after Coach Ward left there was only a few players with any varsity experience and they went thru a rebuilding period.

I only stated that if you asked the team "Would you like to play at 10am, after traveling over an hour, or at 2pm, they would choose 2pm, I would too. Who wants to get up a 7am on their day off, and travel an hour to play 3 hours of scrimmage?
But if you think that playing at 10am instead of 2pm is all they need to do to improve the team, then let them play at 5 am and they will win the state!

No whining. Just suggesting things that might help the team. There are things wrong and right with every team and that is why it is good to get things worked out to everyones advantage so come time for the season games the players are not burned out and hurt.
Example: Clay girls played last night against Northwest in a scrimmage and our lead scorer got really hurt. The other players said, "we scrimmage NW girls every year and someone always gets hurt." So, why then would we continue to play them year after year right before our season? They are a bigger school and we don't need the injuries.

In all seriousness, I am very sorry that your girls player got hurt. I was just poking fun at the fact that it sounds like Clay players/supporters are asking that the coach clear the opponent and game times with their players. I can just imagine me going up to either of the two coaches that I had in school and saying " I'd really rather scrimmage New Boston than the Burg coach...they play too rough and are a bigger school....and why you are at it can we move the time from 9:00am til 12:00 so I can sleep in?"

What would any Coach do with that request?

It depends on the intellect of the coach. I see your point, though.

I agree that you don't question the coach about the time once it has been set, but I still say if you ask the players on either team, they would rather play later in the day. I can tell you for a fact that the boys drag themselves out of bed, sleep on the bus on the way to the game and then with about 20 minutes of warm up, they have to try and play ball at 110% effort. Why do you think they don't schedule any regular season games at 10AM.
I would rather have my players rested and stretched. You need to stop and think about what is best for the athletes.
