Portsmouth has started the decade of the 2010's with a winning record.......12-7 last year.......and with the talent coming back on the varsity and the kids coming up in the lower grades, the Trojans have an excellent chance to field winning teams for at least the next 4-5 years. 3 of the projected starters for the 2010-2011 Trojans will be juniors, and several of the key bench players will be juniors as well.

The decade from 2000-2009 was the worst in Portsmouth history by far........it was the only losing 10 year period in PHS history.........the decade started out 48-21, but ended with 7 straight losing seasons and a 52-100 record, giving the Trojans an overall mark of 100-121. Portsmouth has won 34 district titles but hasn't won one since 2001, when PHS beat Warren 65-54 in the D2 district final.

Last year marked the 70th time in Portsmouth history (since 1916) that the Trojans have notched at least 10 wins in a season, and in addition was PHS's 71st winning season..........they have won at least 15 games 35 times and at least 20 wins 16 times. The only winning season in which Portsmouth did not win at least 10 games was in 1937, where PHS went 8-2 in a season shortened by a devastating flood.

biggdowgg: Haven't heard anything else about it........but should hear something soon with summer basketball coming up. I will be at open gym next Tuesday and will try to remember to ask Coach Collins about it.

It looks like West and East will not be in the Portsmouth Summer League, due to other committments, but Fairland will be participating, and maybe Raceland(KY).

MDan: Anybody with quickness gives me problems on defense........but I can shoot the 3 and have good stamina from being a distance runner........so there's your scouting report on me. I think I do pretty well for 53 years old........but I knew long ago that if you don't have quickness in this game, you're in trouble........I tried to guard Wayne Evans in Bannon Park earlier this week and he went right around me like I was standing still... :-D

oldtrojan: Thanks very much for the schedule!!.....and when I do find out who the Trojans play in Florida, I will post it.......the dates of the games will be Monday Dec.27, Wednesday Dec.29, and Thursday Dec.30.

Portsmouth's summer league starts on Saturday with an all day shootout event.......games will begin around 9 AM and will continue through 4 PM........there will be concessions served........games will be in the new gym, while the junior high and old gym could be used also. Each participating team will play 4 games.

Andrew Bendolph will be unable to play Saturday due to his AAU committment, but should be able to play in regular league play which will start on Monday, June 7th......on the 7th and 14th the league will play at Shawnee State due to the new gym being occupied by prior committments. Coach Collins should still have the bulk of his rotation available for play.

The Trojans will play Ironton only once in the 2010-2011 regular season........IHS is no longer a member of the SEOAL and thus only one game was scheduled.

Coach Collins is still looking for an assistant coach to fill the spot left by Tyson Phillips, who took over as PHS girls head coach........he does expect to fill the position soon, though.

Looking forward to a great season and a very long Tournament run.
You know what I was wondering though is why do we only play a 20 game schedule? If I remember correctly ASVSM played more than 20 game season LeBron's Jr./Sr. years, when they played several holiday tournaments, and on ESPN several times. I also believe other schools also have done this. Am I correct in this? Did the OHSAA change their scheduling practices, or was this an exception because it was LeBron and ESPN? Or is it because it is the way the Trojans and Coach Collins wanted it? I believe the Fans would have liked to see a couple more games added to our schedule. Just saying, and wondering. :aaaaa46

oldtrojan: I believe that Akron SVSM was credited with 20 game regular seasons......the OHSAA state tournament program lists the total number of games for each state champion, and the Irish never exceeded 27 or 28 games.

Per OHSAA mandate, member schools are not allowed to play more than 20 regular season games.......but now many schools are playing foundation games in the preseason.......they are played just like regular season games.......Portsmouth played Notre Dame last year in its foundation game.

There was discussion within the OHSAA about making the regular season 22 games, but that was nixed. But the adding of a foundation game technically gives a school 21 games, although that game doesn't count as part of the overall record.

Thanks for the clarification trojandave. oit must have been that the Irish played so many ESPN games that it seemed as if they exceeded 20 regular season games.

I don't understand these foundation games. Is this just a glorified scrimmage that you sell tickets too? If not why doesn't the OHSAA just add another scrimmage? I'm not trying to be a smart a$$ here, I just really don't get it!

out of bounds: I agree with your sentiments.......last year, our foundation game was played just like a regular season game........it really didn't resemble a scrimmage at all.......I like the idea of having one from the standpoint of playing a "real" game before the season starts, because a traditional scrimmage is not a foundation game.

I wish the OHSAA would expand to 22 games.......it wouldn't lengthen the season, and would shorten any 10-12 day layoffs between games for some schools........but this past season, with the weather in February, just getting in 20 games was a chore for some teams.......I know Portsmouth played only 18 because of the weather.

Portsmouth's Summer League debuted Saturday with a shootout, with all participating teams playing 4 games.......Russell, Boyd County, Lewis County, Fairland, Piketon, and Northwest were there.........virtually every team was missing players, and the Trojans were without Andrew Bendolph, Tre Underwood, Seth Bratchett, and LJ Adams.......playing for PHS were Wayne Evans, Dion McKinley, Mason Jordan, Len Collins, Ryan Monroe, Duke Edwards,Jacob Cook, and Trevor Brown. PHS went 2-2 in its 4 games.

Tonight, regular league play begins at 6 PM at Shawnee State.......each team is supposed to play 2 games........the games next Monday will be at Shawnee State also........Bendolph and Underwood are supposed to be back for tonight's play.

Last night 5 teams participated in the first week of the Portsmouth Summer League......Boyd County, Fairland, Northwest, Piketon, and Portsmouth........the Trojans had 7 kids play......Andrew Bendolph, Wayne Evans, Mason Jordan, Jacob Cook, Duke Edwards, Dion McKinley, and Cody Stapleton, who will be a freshman this coming year.

Portsmouth went 1-1 in its 2 games.......so far the highlight of the play for the Trojans has been the very competitive games with Piketon on Saturday and last night.......both teams have traded close wins thus far while being shorthanded on players.......but it's clearly evident that these two squads will be among the best in SE D3 in 2010-2011.

The Trojans will participate in the Rio Grande Shootout this coming Sunday, June 13......the games start at 1:00 PM.......don't know how many games PHS will play, but probably 3-4....Peebles is supposed to be there....I plan on going, but most likely won't be able to watch all the games due to work later in the evening.
