Westerns varsity basketball job.
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
I cant say I disagree with the above statement but I can so that I know Kight would take the job back in a heartbeat!! He loves those boys and would do anything for them. However you can guarantee they won't offer it to him. I think at this point it would be great if McFarland took the job and I hope that he does! He is probably been the best canadate they have interviewed besides dave!!
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
Danny I agree there is no way they are giving it back to Kight at this point. To much ego involved from the boards side. How long do we have to wait to get an answer from Doug. I know some of the boys have been trying to stay after but not many are interested in staying. The apathy gets worse by the day. Why cant our board see that.
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
I heard the lightle kid dropped 23 in a couple games at a aau tournament at Rio Grande this weekend. With him a year older and the returning upperclassman mix in some of the freshman and the next coach could have something to work with. Just saying.
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
He played well this weekend but needs to be more consistent. It will come. Lands from eastern had a really good tourney as well. He really scares me and look for him to have a big season next year!!! I am excited with the group of kids we have next year and hope the younger ones will be ready to go!! Brandon Brewster played well this weekend also. He was at the same tourney and looks like he is still growing!
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
Still no one hired this has to be the biggest joke in Western basketball history. Fire the coach beg two coaches out of retirement. Not a very thought out process to say the least. You say you have the kids best intrests at hart. Then give them a coach and some idea of where the program is going. Right now there looking for some help step up guys .

Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
Is anyone surprised that they don't have people just standing in line for this job? (1) It's a very hard job to win at, due to the fact that it is one of the smallest and most rural schools in the area and talent is going to be very erratic. (2) It sounds like the parents have waaaaay too much influence on the school board. (3) The school board obviously knows nothing about basketball and doesn't support the coach first, the kids second and the parents last!
They had a young, hard working, energetic coach that the kids seem to play they're butt off for. Yes the record wasn't great, but Coach Knight himself wouldn't have had a winning record there. The bottom line is, did the kids improve as players and become better men while playing for Coach Kight? PERIOD!!
Wins and loses become overrated sometimes. It would be different if they were blowing games they were favored in. Then you can point some fingers. But how many games in the past two years was Western considered the favorite and they lost? They were a very young and small team that was just learning to play within the system and you pulled the rug out! Who wants to go coach at a place that your not given time to let your programs attitude and philosophies trickle down through the Jr. High programs so you aren't starting from scratch every year? Good luck to the kids THEY deserve it. But for selfish reasons, I hope the board gets to reap what they have sewn!

Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
As the world turns was never this interesting or sad. In the newest suprise moive by our illustrious board, jordan is back in the picture. Larry will interview Friday and they will choose between larry and doug mcfarland. Well that is their story this week anyways. This has been going on since the first of March. If that doesnt scream we dont care about our kids i dont know what does.
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
Both are quallified but why this long and why the top secret approach makes our board look like they don't have a clue what there doing. And threw all of this not one member has reached out to talk to the ones this crap effects the most the kids !! Hang in there boys don't give up on your school board.I think it does care for you they just really dropped the ball on this one.

Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
OK, an outsiders point of view. I watched Larry Jordan coach many games at Southeastern. I don't know a whole lot about Doug Mcfarland other than I saw him coach a few games in the past. I saw Dave Kight coach a couple of games the last two years. Based on what I saw, Larry has forgot more about how to coach kids basketball than Dave Kight could offer this group of boys. Being a good motivator and a players coach will not win alot of games if they still don't know how to play the game. Western team last year was what I would call a fundamental nightmare. Kids playing hard while lacking the basic fundamentals to ever win a game. Think about it, Dave Kight coached these boys in reserve ball and a previous year of varsity and what did Western have to show for it? Getting beat by 30-40 points a game in what most consider the worst league in the state. Western kids deserve better. At no time do I ever remember Western basketball being this bad fundamentally. I have to believe Doug or Larry would be a huge upgrade over Dave Kight. At this point, the horses aren't there to win alot of games, but you can be competitive and look like you know what you're doing. Try making Western a place where kids want to come to play. You don't have to recruit kids if your program is good, kids will want to come play for Western. This is your best chance to have a consistent winner which seems like what this community demands. Western needs to look to the future and I am not sure Larry has enough in the tank. This is going to take a while. Hire Mcfarland (if these are your choices), develop a good biddy ball program and make your program a place where kids would want to be a part of in the future.
Re: Westerns varsity basketball job.
We will be glad when it's over. I know bringing it up on posts like this drags it out. But it has been a really drug out process for the kids and parents involved in or with the program.

LJ is just what Latham needs to get back on track.
Hire LJ for about a 5 year run, this will give you time to groom someone to take over.
Let them work with LJ and learn.
