I think you have to realize how many games they have won in the conference and year over year. They won’t blow people out every night. Credit to Portsmouth they play well and shot lights out. Came down to the wire. Good teams figure out a way to win in the end.............

The Fairland V Portsmouth game was a good one, and stayed tight throughout the entire game. The refs were pretty good tonight and didnt play much into the game. Got to give a lot of credit to their sophomore guard Aiden Porter though. Seems like he always plays just outside the spotlight that is always on Thomas for some reason. The kid is a baller, not only brings his A game on offense but he can also turn up the defense. He’s probably one of the best all around players in southeast Ohio but doesn’t get the recognition for some reason. Look at his stats last year as a freshman and what he’s doing this year despite the Dragon offense being based around Thomas. He steps up when needed seems to be a true team leader.

How does portsmouth play so well in this game and look so bad in others?BBALLBABE32 wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 12:28 am I think you have to realize how many games they have won in the conference and year over year. packers80: In answer to your question, having watched every Portsmouth game except the 3 games in Florida, the Trojans have been wildly inconsistent. In part because the entire season, Coach Collins has started 3 sophomores in every game, and played 2 others. Also last night was that the Trojans played a zone defense throughout the game, which was the first time all year they have used it to that extent. Before last night PHS was basically a full court or 3/4 court pressing defense, and teams were going right through it, getting many uncontested layups. That zone over the course of the game kept PHS in the game with a chance to win.
Also against Fairland, Coach Collins started sophomore Jesse Dixon, who had been playing JV and coming off the varsity bench. He responded last night with 16 points, and pretty much solidified a starting spot going forward. Offensively, he made the Trojans much better.
I don't think anybody in the OVC has come that close to beating Fairland on their home court in the 5 years that they have ruled the conference. If Portsmouth can play like that going forward, they will be a headache in the tournament for anyone. Fairland is probably the 2nd best team in the SE district behind Chillicothe. But for the Trojans, can they get that elusive consistency? They looked like a completely different team last night.
Here's how inconsistent the Trojans have been this season: lost 4 games by 43, 30, 37, and 28........lost 6 games by 5, twice in OT, 3 twice, and 1. 4 of those 6 were on the road, and 4 of them came down to the last play of the game. As bad as we have looked at times, we could also have 10 wins.
Very proud of the Trojans last night!!

Gotcha. Hopefully they can be more consistent and get some things figured out before tournament play. Fairland is a tough place to play but if they can carry their performance from last nite forward they'll be a tough out.trojandave wrote: ↑Sat Jan 25, 2020 11:14 am packers80: In answer to your question, having watched every Portsmouth game except the 3 games in Florida, the Trojans have been wildly inconsistent. That Portsmouth team last night was a team I never saw before and looked really good. The shipp kid has a nice mid range shot. 73 is the most points Fairland has gave up this year and I talked to some Fairland folks and were quite stunned by last night. Thomas is a good player but hands down the best player on that Fairland team is #1 the porter kid. Proud of Portsmouth and if they keep that intensity they will be trouble tournament time but like someone said they are so inconsistent. But with rock hill, cop grove and Gallia I think that’s 3 more wins at least.
