What a gym to watch and play in! I had the pleasure of playing there my entire life being a GHS Alum, playing in a varsity basketball game there is like no other experience. Watching that last game was truly a pleasure that I will remember forever...
The gym was the most packed it has been in a long time (they didn't have fire codes back in the day ) ...every seat in the bleacher was full, and so was the stairwells. The balcony had 4 rows of people standing on it (not even a slight exaggeration), the balcony stairwell was full of kids, the stairwell corner squeezed about 5 people in there, and the elevator corner was full as well, and both hallways were jam-packed.
At halftime of the varsity game, all former coaches and 1,000 point scorers were honored....most of them were able to attend. Coaches in attendance were: Steve Jenkins (1970-1986), Tony Piquet (1992-1999), Andy Howard (2002), and Chris Porter (2000, 2001, 2003).
1000 point scorers in attendance were: Todd Loper (1,706 points) (Class of 1991) (School's all-time leading scorer), Ryan Morrow (1,013 points) (Class of 1994), Nick Perkins (1,519 points) (Class of 1995), Charlie McGraw (1,389 points) (Class of 1998), Chris McGraw (1,387 points) (Class of 2000)
Glenwood High School was built in 1914...the first basketball team was in 1919, the games were originally played in what is now the Industrial Arts room. The Tiger Den was built onto the high school in 1923-1924, and the games have been played there ever since. So for 88 years, the Tigers have called The Den "home". Quite amazing.
There have been many amazing players and coaches to walk through this gym, along with some FANTASTIC games. It has one of the richest histories of gyms in this area.
IT WILL BE MISSED!
