Cavs hand GAHS second worst loss in SEOAL history

Host Chillicothe rolled to a 46-8 halftime advantage Tuesday night to hand visiting
Gallipolis Gallia Academy its second worst Southeastern Ohio League cage loss in history, 85-30.

Gallipolis’ worst SEOAL loss was a 57-point defeat by the Pomeroy Panthers in the 1959-60 campaign, 83-26. Had sub Nick Wilson not hit a trifecta at the buzzer Tuesday, the Gallians would have lost by a record 58 points.

Chillicothe placed four players in double figures, led by 6-7 senior Ray Chambers 18 markers and 12 rebounds. Anthony Hitchens added 14, Stuart Beverly and Seth Dawes 12 apiece.

Cavs coach Gary Kellough started substituting freely with two minutes left in the first half, and called off a full court press during second half play.

Both coaches cleared their benches in the final quarter.

Quinton Nibert and David Rumley led Gallia Academy’s scorers with six points apiece.

Chillicothe led 20-6, 46-8 and 66-17 at the quartermarks.

Gallipolis connected on 11 of 35 field goal attempts for 31.8 percent. The Gallians were 5-11 at the line (45.4), committed 23 personal fouls, losing John Toaster in the final period and picked off 25 rebounds, five by Rumley, and five by Chris Armstrong. Gallipolis committed a season-high 38 turnovers.

Chillicothe connected on 33 of 60 field goal attempts for 55 percent. CHS was 16 of 30 (53.3) at the foul line had16 personals, picked off 39 rebounds, 12 by Chambers, and committed 10 turnovers.

The loss left Gallipolis 3-7 overall and 1-5 in SEOAL play. Chillicothe improved to 8-1 on the year and the defending league champs remained unbeaten in conference action with a 6-0 mark. In fact, since joining the SEOAL last year, Chillicothe has now won 20 straight Southeastern Ohio League wins.

Friday, Gallipolis remains on the road where the Blue Devils meet Warren Local at Vincent. The Cavs will travel to Marietta Friday seeking their 21st straight conference victory.

In Tuesday’s reserve game, Gallia Academy’s Blue Imps erased a four-point deficit with 54.9 seconds remaining in regulation play to knot the count at 59-all and send the game into overtime.


Nick Mitchell hit a trifecta with 44 seconds left to cut the deficit to one, 55-54. With
41.2 seconds left, the Cavs Michael Hamilton sank one of two free throws to make it 56-54 but GAHS got a two-pointer by Mitchell at 29 seconds to knot the count at 56-56, sending the game in overtime.

In the overtime period, Mitchell sank a freebie (1:35) but Chillicothe’s Anthony Thomas sank a freebie (with no time off the clock at 1:35) to knot the count again at 57-57.

With 59 seconds left, Eric Young’s goal gave the home team a 59-57 lead. Gallia’s Austin Wilson canned one of two free throws with 42.7 seconds left to reduce Chilly’s lead to 59-58. After a Cavs turnover, Gallipolis missed a shot but Jared Golden, freshman guard/forward playing his first game of the year following a thumb injury, tipped in the rebound with 22 seconds left to put the Blue Imps on top 60-59.

Mitchell canned two free throws with 12.1 seconds left to give GAHS a 62-59 lead. Eric Young’s three-point atttempt from the right corner split the cords, but officials ruled the bucket no good because the final horn before he got it off, giving the Gallians their ninth win in 10 games.

Mitchell led the Blue Imps with 20 points. Corey Eberfeld added 11,
Golden nine, Nate Allison and Chuck Calvert seven each and Jordan Cornwell five. Eric Young led CHS with 18 points. Jim VanVoorhis added 12 and Anthony Thomas 11.

GAHS remained in first place in the SEOAL reserves South Division with a 5-1 mark. Chillicothe dropped to 4-3 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

Had a nice little chat with Graham Thompson, retired Chillicothe teacher Tuesday evening. Thompsonwas a Wellston High School graduate and star athlete in the late 40s.

While attending Rio Grande College in the 50s, Graham played baseball for Gilkey' Queen Bees, and was a member of the 1950 OVA Bees championship team.

Thompson had it rough last summer, losing his wife, and brother. He also suffered a minor stroke.

Also had a chat with Steve Mullins, a GAHS graduate and outstanding tennis player. Mullins is now a member of the Chillicothe Board of Education.

Although I didn't get to meet him, Dan Staggs, a GAHS graduate and former Blue Devil football player, son of former Gallipolis superintendent Dan Staggs, was at the game. On the CHS program, Dan's listed as an assistant principal at Chillicothe.

Army of SEOPS fame dropped by the scorer's table to say hi, and CHS Athletic Director Ray Bradley was a gracious host during Tuesday's games.

Chillicothe officials did a great job in remodeling Hutton Gym after passing a levy two or three years ago.

I knew Graham Thompson was a fine man, but I did not know about his athletic endeavors back in Wellston. I have seen him at the games and actually forgot who he was. Time flies when your out of school so long.

In Steve Mullins, we have a fine BOE member. He is a winner in all areas.

I am glad you meet the infamous Army. I am waiting on him to take me out to dinner one day...
