Chillicothe 59 Newark 53

On the biggest stages of this year's schedule, Chillicothe is 2-and-0.
Three weeks after knocking off three-time defending D3 state champ North College Hill in Cincinnati, the Cavs beat Newark at Ohio State 59-53. It's Chillicothe's 10th straight win. The Wildcats jumped out to a 15-11 lead through the game's first 8 minutes, using a similar strategy implemented by Marietta Friday night, packing the paint and forcing the Cavs to shoot over a zone defense.

In the second period, Humpty Hitchens struck for 8 points over that zone as the Cavs outscored Newark 18-9 to take a 29-24 halftime lead. The Wildcats shot just 22 percent in the quarter. Out of the intermission, Hitchens hit the Cavs first basket. Then, it was Ray Chambers' time. The Cavs' center scored 11 conseuctive points giving Chillicothe a 39-27 lead. Newark made things interesting, forcing three Chillicothe turnovers late in the game closing the gap to 51-49, but the Cavs righted the ship as Hitchens put the game away with five free throws down the stretch. Hitchens finished as the game's MVP with 24 points. Chambers had 17. Caleb Knights added six, Stu Beverly 5 while Ron Smith and Seth Dawes added 4 points each.

The Newark Wildcats and Chillicothe Cavaliers had not met since 1976 as members of the former Central Ohio League.

Chillicothe (10-1) resumes SEOAL play Tuesday at Ironton.

Newark is 10-3.

This was a big time set up game for the Cavs. Veteran teams pull through and halfway through the third, the defense took over and dominated. We may have lost this game last year (at this time of the year). This is about when we started peaking.

Congrats to the Tigers on a valiant effort. They were dropping 3 balls all night (especially first half).

Cavs led by Beverly who breaks out of 3 ball slump with a career high.

Chambers and Hump both in foul trouble in the first half. Tigers play box and 1 on Hump to take him out. Other kids step up and get it down.

Cavs are to strong on the defensive side not to stay in the game. Good news is the win. Bad news is burn the tape and get ready for Newark tomorrow.

That is what created the set up game. Long road trip with an overnight stay in Columbus to play old COL rival Newark.

Look for a fun day in CBUS tomorrow.

GO CAVS :!: :!: :!:

Interesting game.... Chilli pressed constantly and the Tigers handled it pretty well. However, just like in boxing where constant body blows eventually take their toll, the press finally gave the Tigers some problems in the third quarter. Chilli ended the third quarter up 7 after trailing by three at the half. The game ended with Chilli up by 12. They were never able to put the Tigers away. I was proud of the Tigers effort. Tiger shooting from the foul line in the first half was poor or the lead would have been six or eight at the half. Just too many turnovers and easy looks for Chilli in the second half. Look for the Tigers to finish strong.

Good luck to Chilli vs. Newark.... just like the good old days of the COL.

Chillicothe..20 26 20 19 -- 85

Host Chillicothe rolled to a 46-8 halftime advantage Tuesday night to hand visiting Gallipolis Gallia Academy its second worst Southeastern Ohio League cage loss in history, 85-30.

Gallipolis’ worst SEOAL loss was a 57-point defeat by the Pomeroy Panthers in the 1959-60 campaign, 83-26. Had sub Nick Wilson not hit a trifecta at the buzzer Tuesday, the Gallians would have lost by a record 58 points.

Chillicothe placed four players in double figures, led by 6-7 senior Ray Chambers 18 markers and 12 rebounds. Anthony Hitchens added 14, Stuart Beverly and Seth Dawes 12 apiece.

Cavs coach Gary Kellough started substituting freely with two minutes left in the first half, and called off a full court press during second half play.

Both coaches cleared their benches in the final quarter.

Quinton Nibert and David Rumley led Gallia Academy’s scorers with six points apiece.

Chillicothe led 20-6, 46-8 and 66-17 at the quartermarks.

Gallipolis connected on 11 of 35 field goal attempts for 31.8 percent. The Gallians were 5-11 at the line (45.4), committed 23 personal fouls, losing John Toaster in the final period and picked off 25 rebounds, five by Rumley, and five by Chris Armstrong. Gallipolis committed a season-high 38 turnovers.

Chillicothe connected on 33 of 60 field goal attempts for 55 percent. CHS was 16 of 30 (53.3) at the foul line had16 personals, picked off 39 rebounds, 12 by Chambers, and committed 10 turnovers.

The loss left Gallipolis 3-7 overall and 1-5 in SEOAL play. Chillicothe improved to 8-1 on the year and the defending league champs remained unbeaten in conference action with a 6-0 mark. In fact, since joining the SEOAL last year, Chillicothe has now won 20 straight Southeastern Ohio League wins.

Hitchens 25 points, Chambers 29 pts......game mvp 21pts 4th qtr...tons of rebounds, Dawes 5 pts, Beverly 6 pts, Knights 9 pts, Ron Smith 10 pts........great game off the bench......didnt give rebound totals but Chambers and Ron Smith had a boatload.

Humpty was absolutely unbelievable in the first quarter. 4 three pointers, a couple of which coming from behind the NBA line, setting up teammates, and like Hitchbone said, he didn't force anything all night. when the shots were there he knocked them down, the rest of the night he got everyone else involved. NCH spent alot of defensive energy on slowing him after that huge first quarter and the rest of the kids stepped up and did their part. i thought Ron Smith and Seth Dawes were awesome on the glass tonight. Ray Chambers had foul trouble but they kept Chilli in the game until he was able to return in the 4th quarter. and return he did!!!!

here is how a 4 minute spurt went in the 4th quarter for Chilli:

Chambers missed dunk
Hitchens assist to Chambers for a dunk
Hitchens assist to Chambers for a dunk and the foul for the AND 1
Chambers dunk
Hitchens assist to Chambers for a reverse slam!!!

Chilli really showed some poise and their defense was great in the 4th quarter. Rebounding was great all night. and like i said I couldn't be more proud of these kids. everyone had a part in this victory. Hump showed great unselfishness in not forcing things when they tried to take him out of the game, and probably had 10 assists on the night, Ray was great on the boards and ended up with 29 pts and really lifted chillicothe emotionally in the 4th with all those dunks. Caleb Knights was his usual solid self who frustrated NCH defensively, Stu came up big in the final quarter when it mattered, Seth played very much within himself and executed when he got an open look, and Ron Smith continues to be johnny on the spot, key buckets at times we needed a score. he's always in the right position at the right time. he's really progressing nicely.

Chilli showed they are starting to put it all together and they are a serious threat in D2. This team is already experienced but with confidence of pulling out of situations with such an emphatic finish will only further their progression. Way to go Cavs!!

NCH is an awesome D3 team. I've got them penciled in to make it to the title game in my bracket thats for sure! NCH vs. Cleveland VASJ

Garin Lee Veris (born February 27, 1963 in Chillicothe, Ohio) was an American football defensive end in the National Football League, mainly for the New England Patriots.

Veris graduated from Chillicothe High School, where he starred in football playing offense and defense and basketball in 1981.

The CAVS were also in the former C.O.L. Central Ohio League from 1941-1944 and 1948-1976. While in the C.O.L. during the early years they played against teams that were in the C.O.L. like, Lancaster, Newark, Zanesville, Coshocton, Cambridge, Dover and Marietta. In the latter years of the C.O.L. The CAVS competed against teams in the League like, Ironton, Upper Arlington, Lancaster, Newark, Zanesville and Marietta.

One standout that played for the CAVS in the 1960's was:

Gregory Lynn Cook (born November 20, 1946 in Dayton, Ohio), is a retired American football quarterback. In the AFC.

Cook lived most of his life in Chillicothe, Ohio, where he excelled in baseball, basketball and football while attending Chillicothe High School.

He played collegiately at the University of Cincinnati, once throwing for 554 yards in one game, and was drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the first round of the 1969 NFL Draft on the strength of Bengals coach and founder Paul Brown being impressed by Cook's performance in the Bearcats' come-from-behind victory against Miami University, which was Bo Schembechler's last game before he left to coach at the University of Michigan. Brown had attended the game, but left when the Redskins' (now the Redhawks) lead reached 21-6. It was only after the game that Brown discovered that Cincinnati had rallied for a 23-21 victory.

"That quarterback. That's our draft choice," said Brown after seeing film of Cook's rallying performance.

Due to John Stofa, the Bengals' starting signalcaller for much of the team's inaugural season, being released, Cook was named the Bengals' quarterback, and started spectacularly, leading the Bengals to a 3-0 record. However, in game three versus Kansas City, Cook felt a pop in his right (throwing) shoulder after being tackled and missed the next three games. Due, arguably, to the non-existence of magnetic resonance imaging tests, the fact that his rotator cuff had been torn went undiagnosed.

Despite this, Greg Cook went on to pass for 1,854 yards and led the Bengals to wins over the Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders, the two best teams in the AFL. His 9.411 yards per pass attempt and 17.5 yard per completion are rookie records that still stand. Cook was UPI's choice for AFL Rookie of the Year.

Recalls Cook: "I took cortisone shots and played in pain, but the shoulder hadn't started to deteriorate yet, so I could still function. I still had the strength. I felt obligated to finish the season. I'd gotten off to a good start. I didn't want to relinquish that."

The rotator cuff began deteriorating after the season; during surgery, it was revealed that Cook also had a partially detached biceps muscle. After three operations proved futile, he retired. A 1973 comeback attempt failed and Cook retired permanently. Many football experts say that had it not been for that injury, Cook may very well have gone on to be one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time. Cook is not well known by fans today, but when asked by those who saw him play, who he was similar too, many reply that he had a very similar game to one of his contemporaries - Terry Bradshaw. Like Bradshaw, Cook had very good size, he could run with speed and power, and had a rocket arm.

Since his retirement, Greg Cook, who still lives in Cincinnati, has worked with United Parcel Service and with Worksite Information Network as a motivational speaker for labor unions.

Of interest, Cook was an art major at the University of Cincinnati, and continues to paint today. He has had works hung in the Ohio Governor's Mansion.

New York Jets quarterback Chad Pennington, who suffered two tears to his rotator cuff and has undergone as many surgeries to repair it, is often compared to Cook because their injuries are so similar.

- The Central Ohio League changes its schedule to a quasi-divisional format. The league will be grouped by geography, with the four eastern schools--Cambridge, Coshocton, Dover, and Marietta--playing each other twice, and the four western schools--Chillicothe, Lancaster, Newark, and Zanesville--playing twice. Schools will play against the teams in the other group only once, for a total of 10 COL games.

- Since Cambridge and Zanesville have a long-standing rivalry, both schools agree to play a second game. The second contest will be considered a non-league game.
