Portsmouth tops Gallipolis, 77-36, gains 3-way tie for first

After a slow start, host Portsmouth exploded for 68 points in the final three quarters to hand visiting Gallipolis a 77-36 Southeastern Ohio Athletic League hardwood loss Friday night.

By virtue of the win, PHS climbed into a three-way tie for first place in the SEOAL as Chillicothe knocked off previously unbeaten Warren Local, 65-56 at Chillicothe. Warren, Chilliothe and Portsmouth are now tied for first place with identical 3-1 SEOAL records.

The Trojans improved to 8-2 overall and will host non-league White Oak on Jan. 10. Meanwhile, GAHS dropped to 3-8 overall and 1-3 in league action. The Blue Devils will host defending league champion Chillicothe on Jan. 13 in a tripleheader in the GAHS gym at Centenary,

Veterans Wayne Evans and Dion McKinley paced PHS with 16 points apiece. Jallen Carter added 11.

Justin Bailey paced Gallipolis with13 points, Nick Saunders added seven and Reid Eastman five for the Gallians.

Portsmouth made 33 out of 58 field goal attempts for 56.8 percent. At the foul line, PHS was three of seven for 42.8 percent. The Trojans picked off 33 rebounds, 11 by McKinley. Portsmouth had 13 personal fouls and 15 turnovers.

Gallipolis made 15 out of 37 field goal attempts for 40.5 percent. GAHS was three of 10 at the foul line for 33.3 percent. GAHS had 17 rebounds, led by Justin Bailey’s seven snags. GAHS had 11 personal fouls and 27 turnovers with 12 coming in the second period as a result of Portsmouth’s full-court press.

Portsmouth made it a clean sweep by winning the freshman game, 40-28, and the reserve game, 57-35.

In the freshman game, Portsmouth led 11-2, 22-4 and 38-10 at the quartermarks. GAHS outscored the PHS subs 18-2 in the final period. Michael Putney led GAHS with 11 points. S. Martain led PHS with 17 points. Poirtsmouth improved to 3-5 on the year. GAHS dropped to 1-8.

In the reserve game, Portsmouth outscored GAHS 30-13 in the second half to post its eighth win against two setbacks. PHS improved to 2-2 in SEOAL action. Gallipolis dropped to 2-8 overall and 1-3 in league play.

Portsmouth led 15-12, 27-22 and 44-30 at the quartermarks.

Cody Call and Jeremy Wilson led GAHS with eight points apiece. Alex White added seven. Portsmouth placed four players in double figures, led by Cody Stapleton’s 14 points. Isiah Lisath and Cody Timberman tossed in 12 points and Austin Peano added 11. Timberman, a freshman, is the grandson of former PHS star and professional athlete Al Oliver.

Great talking with Bigdwagg & Trojandave prior to the game Friday. The PHS athletic director really treated us nice during the evening. Trojans now have a chance to win or share league title following Warren's loss.

A few of the Chilly faithful are asking if you could post a thread with the league records of the Frosh and JV. A's always, great work on the game summary. Makes me feel like I was there.

Hitchbones...Here's all games, varsity and reserve standings up to date. Since freshmen don't all play eqach other, they don't have frosh standings. I know Warren, Chillicothe and Portsmouth all have good freshmen teams.

I think that's because it's wrong in our program......it's been wrong in several I have bought this year...
