Jan 6th - Nelsonville-York (6-3, 1-1) @ Athens (5-3, 2-1)

Post by Power 105 »

Time for the Buckeyes and Bulldogs to meet - this time on the hardwood on Power 105's Athens County High School Basketball Game of the Week.

What a year it has been in this rivalry, and it only gets meaner Friday night with bragging rights and TVC-Ohio standings points.

Catch this game on both Power 105 (105.5 FM) or 970 WATH (now also broadcasting on 97.1 FM).

Pregame coverage starts at 7:30 with a 7:45 tip off from McAfee Gymnasium.

Listen online at www.athensi.com - search WXTQ FM/WATH AM on the lower right side of the page.

Good luck to both teams.

Just like in football - I can absolutly not figure out (or pick) a winner in this game Friday ... It should be a good one and the atmosphere should be pretty intense.

One thing about winning on the gridiron - the winner gets to use that (during basketball season) when it comes to the student section and the cheers ... lol ... I guarantee there will be some creativity going on amongst the two sections Friday night ... I know some folks get annoyed or upset over some of the cheers they come up with - but me - I think its pretty funny. They're just kids having fun for goodness sake.

Good luck to both teams - I know its still early, but falling two games behind Vinton is probably not a good idea - which makes Friday's game an important one.

Depending on the officials this could be either a close one, or a "name the score" by NY. Either way coaching will prevail and NY should get the win. Too much size, experience, outside shooting and coaching to overcome for Athens. Of course, if it's the same officials who did the football game... Or if Athens brings some ringer in who is not listed on the team roster...

I think we got a pretty good coach here in Athens - I don't see that part of the game being a problem

Although I'm an NY supporter, I agree that the student section chants are entertaining. Let's hope no one gets mad like what happened during volleyball season and Athens high school basketball coach.

I think NY has the Better team with more talent...However you would have to be nuts to think NY will run away with this one.
Go Bucks.
Athens over NY in football ( 23-20 OT )
NY over Athens in Wrestling ( 46-31 )
NY @ Athens ( ???? )

We will have to see what NY team shows up. If it is the first week of season team, Athens wins, if it is the one who has played recently, then NY wins.

I think it would be safe to say that both Athens and NY weren't firing on all cylinders the first week ... Playoff football can really delay your basketball season IMO ... Wahama, Athens, NY, South Gallia all looked sluggish early and all four of them lost games early. Still though, if you look at who NY lost too: New Lex (4-3) and Amanda (7-1)? Those aren't really that bad of losses, especially only losing to Amanda 55-51 back on Dec. 6th. Since then they have rattled off 6 wins in their last 7 games. (Only set-back was a 68-60 loss to Vinton County)

Its going to be a real good game between two good teams in the TVC-Ohio ... Athens had won four straight before losing at Dublin Scioto - and NY has won four straight heading into Friday nights match-up.

IMO if Athens wins this game minus one of their better players plus playing two freshman, Coach Skinner should get serious consideration for COY. NY is very talented group of seniors with more experience. This should be a very exciting game with both teams and crowd really into this one. Usually these rival games are very low scoring but I wouldn't be surprised if this was a shoot out.

Been waiting for this matchup. At the end of last season, I thought the Buckeyes would be one of the better teams in the TVC Ohio starting the 2011-12 season. I was not that sure about Athens though. I knew the Bulldogs would be descent but also knew they were losing a few starters to graduation. This year, VC handled the Bulldogs pretty easily in their first meeting but then the Bulldogs turn around and beat Jackson in Jackson. I really thought Jackson would beat Athens quite easily??? Shows how much I know.
IMO - should be a great game but I'm going with Nelsonville in a close game.

Definitely was a big part of the game with that foul situation at the end of regulation. Glad he did that though...
