If the two defenses are equally talented in movement, anticipation and working together....but one team has a 3 times more talented offense.......

Oak Hill 73
Symmes Valley 43

The Oak Hill Oaks struggled early in their opening-season game against the Symmes Valley Vikings Tuesday evening at home. Oak Hill, though, broke things open in the third period and pulled away with a 75-48 Southern Ohio Conference non-divisional win.

Four Oaks finished the game in double figures, led by J.D. Hale's game-high 25-point effort. Ryan Borden finished with 14 points and was followed by Kyle Ondera with 11 and Jesse Slone with 10 markers, respectively.

Josh Craft paces Symmes Valley with 14 points while Chris Tibbs contributed 10 to a losing cause.

Oak Hill took a decisive edge on the boards as they outrebounded the Vikings by a 55-27 clip. The Oak Hill defense forced the Vikings into 19 turnovers while Oak Hill committed 13 giveaways.

Symmes Valley proved to be tougher than expected. They hung with the Oaks through the first two quarters actually taking a one-point lead on one occasion early in the second stanza.

The Vikings, though, wilted with a poor shooting performance in the third quarter and the Oaks rolled from there.

It appeared the Oaks would run away with it early as Oak Hill established an early 8-0 lead that lasted nearly three minutes. The Vikings' first basket came when Kris Tribbs ended the scoring drought with a three-pointer from the top of the key.

Trailing 10-3 near the midway point of the opening stanza, Symmes Valley put together a five-point run to come within a three-point (11-8) margin with 3:32 remaining. Oak Hill took the lead to six, scoring the next three points, but Robbie Powell connected on a three-pointer out of the corner, just before the first-quarter buzzer, to make the score, 14-11.

Powell opened the second quarter with a short jumper from the lane to make the score 14-13. Then, with 6:26 to go, Luke Taylor hit two free throws to give the Vikings their only lead of the game. Fortunately, Oak Hill finally woke up offensively and put together a 10-5 run to widen the lead to 10. The Vikings, however, made it close with a 7-4 run over the remainder of the period to trail 34-27 at the break.

Both teams had 4-0 runs in the early going of the third quarter. After Tibbs, though, hit a second straight layup in a matter of 20 seconds, to keep his team within seven at 37-31. The Vikings missed their next 11 shots and Oak Hill went on a 16-0 run to take a 54-31 lead at the third stop. The Vikings never got close again as the lead stayed beyond double figures the rest of the way.

Oak Hill returns to action Friday night when they travel to South Webster to face the Jeeps in the first SOC Division II matchup of the year.
