Assigners for officials?

I am curious as to how each assigner for each conference decides on the officials for each game?
I am also curious as to why that it seems that each assigner from our area brings in officials from other chapters to work games?
Not trying to start any arguement, I just always wondered why that we see officials from like say Columbus traveling down here to work SOC games?
I have always thought that the assigner would want to keep the games within his own chapter?

It really is based on each and every assigner i would say. If the assigner is an active official, maybe he becomes friends with other chapter's officials and they trade off. I'll work a marquee matchup for you and you guys can work for me.
I think ALL assigners should be retired officals. You are never going to eliminate politics unless you go to a "draw" system.
I think all crews should draw a number in the blind. The schedule is made up before the draw and each game is assigned a number. Once the schedule is done, each crew draws a number out of a hat. Then all games are assigned. No politics, just luck of the draw. Maybe they are already done this way? I doubt it, but maybe.

Assigners have a tough job. In the SOC they don't want guys from the Portsmouth Chapter officiating schools they may work in or graduated from. Also spreading out the good officials is tough because there are not a lot of good officials. The assigner, I am sure, has friends from other chapters, so it makes sense to bring them in so no schools will consider the officials to be homers. I don't know of a right and wrong way of assigning games, one thing is for sure, I wouldn't want the job.

The T.V.C. will never have an assigner because then they would have to say it's about the kids and not the adults who are still living though there kids or the adults still living through there school.

What is a good official?? lol Assigners do have a tough job. The problem is that assigners tend to have favorites. The favorites get the best games. For example i gurantee you you that when oak hill and minford play they get the officials that have a loads of experience and alot of these officials only do about 12 games a year becasue this allows them to do regional and district tourny games. I do agree that this game deserves quality but so do all the other games. Although one can say they are bad refs but they are the favorite of the assignert it is politics as usual lol. If you look at the bottom of the SOC and find the last place teams they are the ones that get the shaft on quality of officials when they play each other. you can see it every night in southern ohio. this is just my opinion from willow wood

You are correct, but your reasoning is wrong IMO. The reason is some of the schools want to have the same home town officials over and over in some sports. The same guys do all or almost all of the home games. Now tell me if you were doing more than half of your job just seconds away from your home wouln't you try to do whatever you could to keep that employment? I would, and I am sure those officials feel the same way. So to keep their close to home employment they make sure the home team coach is kept happy.

I disagree with your comment about the most experirnced getting the best games.....I was at a marquee matchup 2 weeks ago between 2 SOC schools and 2 of the officials were very inexperienced......out of the 3 man crew.....1 had over 5 years experience, the other 2 have about 3 years varsity experience between them.....and it showed.

Assigners-Call officials and give them dates for availability. If the official/individual or crew is open they take the date given. Assigners from leagues have to compete with assigners from other leagues. If an assigner waits to late then he/she will get maybe the so called not as competent officials. The more leagues an official works in the more chances of good games then bad games. Yes, some of the better officials get the so called better games. If you want better games then work harder to be a better official and call in several leagues!!!!
For those of you who want to see who is believed to be the better officials-voted on by coaches, athletic directors, assigners, Southeastern Ohio District Athletic Board, and OHSAA state reps. go to
http://www.ohsaa.org Go under officiating home, click on it. Scroll down to Game assignments, click on it. Scroll to bottom of page click on boy's or girl's and it will take you to Southeast District-There is your list of the better officials in your district.

Our athletic director does a great job of assigning officials at Eastern. We get the best avaialable and never have many complaints. So I see no need for a league assigner.

If you are talking about Eastern-Beaver then your athletic director does not assign officials. The SOC has an assigner that assigns the games. You will find that most of the SOC I games are assigned to officials that are not "buddies" of the assigner.

I don't see where voting for "homer" refs would be beneficial towards a coach. 1. Coaches want the best working tournament games. 2. The "homer" refs are not going to be working teams that they normally work. 3. I think 90% of the coaches and AD's have more integrity then that!!

Most people want to blame the officials for their team's lost - but was it the officials that turned over the basketball 20 times a game or shot 6 for 24 free throws or just shot 21% from floor or was out rebounded by 14. No they were not. maybe all of you that at blaming officials and the assigners for your team's lost or bad play should try going out there working the floor.
