Division III Sectional at Waverly

I don't think there's been a specific topic on the Waverly Sectional so here goes it. There are 15 teams in this and four advance to the District Tournament at the Convo. This has to be one of the most competitive Sectionals in Ohio this year as several teams have impressive records and unfortunately some will be left home after losing at Waverly.

Here are the teams, records of those I could find, and their league affiliation:

SVC

Adena (10-4)
Huntington-Ross (8-6)
Piketon (12-2)
Southeastern Ross (4-10)
Westfall (11-5)
Zane Trace (9-4)

SHL

Eastern Brown (6-5)
Lynchburg-Clay (2-8)
North Adams (11-0)
Peebles (9-3)
West Union

SOC

Minford (10-4)
Portsmouth West
Valley (11-3)

SEOAL

Portsmouth (6-5)

How much will politics play in the seeding with 6 teams from the SVC, 5 from the SHL, 3 from the SOC, and 1 from the SEOAL. Do you think that the coaches from the lower three leagues have been making phone calls to help in the seedings? How much will these leagues ally with their own league teams to help in the seeding?

How does everybody think the seeding should go?

Here's my order as of right now, of course it is subject to change over the course of this next week as several teams will have three or possibly more games.

1. North Adams (11-0)
2. Piketon (12-2)

***** Here's where it gets a little "tricky" as their are seven teams vying for seeds 3-9

3. Peebles (9-3) only losses - two- to an undefeated North Adams team and
the other by one point to a 2 loss Albany Alexander team in
a game they simply gave away and never should have lost.
4. Valley (11-3)
5. Adena (10-4)
6. Minford (10-4)
7. Westfall (11-5)
8. Portsmouth (6-5)
9. Zane Trace (9-4)
10. Huntington-Ross (8-6)
11. Eastern Brown (6-5)
12. West Union
13. Southeastern Ross
14. Lynchburg-Clay
15. Portsmouth West

Thoughts???????

Right now I would give Valley the edge for #3 over Peebles......VHS has beaten Wheelersburg, Oak Hill, Minford, and Grandview Heights(Columbus)..I believe Grandview is 10-2.......all those schools are having good seasons.......more quality wins for Valley in my opinion......Peebles lost to North Adams twice, and Alexander......two very good teams, but they lost........does Peebles have as many quality wins as Valley?

This sectional is as competitive as I have ever seen it.......and even though my Trojans don't have a glittering record, we are better than last year and I will maintain that if any other school in that sectional played in the SEOAL, they would have their share of losses. Not that the SEOAL is a great league when you look around the state, but it is the best league in the SE District.........Portsmouth is 4-0 outside the SEOAL and 2-5 in league play........ we have wins over Wheelersburg and Minford..........what may come back to haunt the Trojans in seeding is losing to Jackson on the road and Logan at home.......2 teams with well under .500 records.

But strength of schedule is not taken into consideration.......it wasn't last year and that's why Portsmouth ended up a #10 seed.......we won at Minford last year and the Falcons still got a higher seed than us.......and it looks like that will happen again....

Honestly, though, we had our chances to take care of our own business and didn't......so where we end up is our fault.........hopefully, though, we can play to our potential instead of talking about it..........

I agree with you and your thoughts on Portsmouth. If I was in this Sectional and had to play the Trojans in a final to get to the Convo that is definitely not a team I would want to face. If any other team had to play the schedule that Portsmouth has had then I don't think many of them would have a better record. I just think that politics will come into play with Portsmouth since they are in a league by themselves. The SVC schools will make sure that they do not have a team seeded in a position that would require them to beat Portsmouth in order to win the Sectional and get to the District at the Convo.

I would think that there's going to be a couple of upsets in this sectional considering how deep this field is. I can't recall a better group of teams at Waverly........I wouldn't count out my Trojans winning the sectional or district for that matter, and we're staring at probably an #8 or #9 seed.

I think the top 9-10 teams are all capable of making a good tourney run.........other than the Valley--Piketon flipflop, I think the seedings are pretty good.

I think North Adams or Piketon are going to be huge Portsmouth fans this coming week.......only problem, we play at Chillicothe Tuesday and host Zanesville Friday.....we do have Northwest at home Saturday.........

bucknut23: You're right about the SVC.....they will have a strong voice in the seeding voting........there is strength in numbers, and the SVC has it in this sectional.

Do you have a bracket you could post on how the seedings/games will be?

Adena should not be ahead of Zane Trace. ZT defeated them both times.

ZT does have two tough games before next Sunday in Logan Elm at home Tuesday and at Greenfield McClain next Saturday. Of course, weather permitting.

Biased of course, but I think Wf worst seed should be a 6. Probably should be a 5. Strength of Schedule isn't considered but we haven't had a "bad" loss. Alexander, Logan Elm, Piketon (2), and Div. one Teays Valley in O.T. Probably doesn't matter...seeds 5-10 can do damage!

Come on Bengal Fan...pretty obvious I meant "bad" loss meaning...losing to a team with a bad record. Not the point difference. Piketon smoked us but we only lost to above average teams.

Zane Trace seeded above Westfall? We beat them and they lost to Southeastern?

Ironmen92: You're seedings look good to me........and I'm like you.......I feel the top 10 or 11 seeds are very close in caliber........the deepest the Waverly sectional has ever been.......I feel my Trojans can handle any of those teams, though, if we're clicking........and I did say IF...........

I predict a couple of upsets at Waverly this year.......but with the depth of the field, they would only be upsets in terms of seeding.........

I dont see Portsmouth getting a 9 seed. We are the only SEOAL school in there, and wont get any favortism. We will prob be 7-7 when they draw. Depending on what Eastern Brown does we may even end up a 11 seed.

1. North Adams (11-0)
2. Piketon (12-2)
3. Valley (11-3)
4. Peebles (9-3)
5. Adena (10-4)
6. Westfall (11-5)
7. Zane Trace (9-4)
8. Minford (10-4)
9. Huntington-Ross (8-6)
10. Portsmouth (6-5)
11. Eastern Brown (6-5)
12. West Union (4-9)
13. Southeastern Ross (4-10)
14. Lynchburg-Clay (2-8)
15. Portsmouth West (2-9)

the svc is very strong this year. But i know that westfalls only lost 2 games in the svc and thats to piketon they should be 3 or 4 because they have beat zane trace and adena. I dont know much about peebles or valley.

That only shows the district pairings once the four Sectional winners are determined. I was looking for how the numbers of the seeded teams would be paired at the Waverly Sectional. After doing a little research I think I figured it out.

1________(BYE)

8________

9________
______________________________________
4________

13_______

5________

12_______

______________________________________

2________

15_______

7________

10_______

_______________________________________

3________

14_______

4________

11_______

_______________________________________

If this is the case, then there is only one bye in the Sectional and that of course goes to the number one seed. I don't know if I'd want that number one seed and have to face Portsmouth in the final to go to the District. My guess is that the SVC coaches are working overtime and are going to make sure that Portsmouth gets that 8 or 9 seed.

I'd almost bet that depending on how the games go this week they are looking to have Minford or Eastern Brown be that other seed that would have to face Portsmouth to advance to face North Adams (#1 seed) in that final.

Thoughts??

I adjusted the brackets based on the info. of wffan. Thanks !!!

The Waverly sectional always interesting. Remember when a 14 seed Portsmouth West knocked off the SVC champion and #3 seed Huntington?
