Visiting Gallipolis scored its first victory over Marietta in Sutton Gymnasium in six years Friday night, 40-37. It was the 2009-10 Southeastern Ohio League opener for both schools.

Last GAHS varsity win at Marietta was 80-63 in a second round game in 2003

Gallipolis improved its season record to 3-1 while Marietta dropped its second game in three starts.

Gallipolis was scheduled to play a non-league game at Meigs Saturday evening, weather permitting, but the twinbill was postponed because of the weather. No makeup has been made.

In a topsy-turvy contest, the Tigers and Blue Devils made 41 personal fouls and recorded a total of 53 turnovers. GAHS committed 23 miscues and Marietta 28.

Marietta started out like a house afire with a 9-4 advantage. The Tigers led 14-9 during the halftime break. GAHS broke it open in the third stanza by outscoring MHS, 12-1 to take a 21-15 lead into the final period. GAHS held MHS to no field goals in 10 tries in the third stanza.

The Blue Devils increased their lead to eight points, 38-30, with 59 seconds left on a goal by Jared Golden, but MHS came back at the foul line to make it 40-37 with 14.5 seconds and had a chance to tie the score but Chuck Calvary stole a rebound pass with four seconds left to seal the victory.

Ethan Moore paced GAHS with 15 points. Big John Troester added nine markers., Corey Eberhard had six and Golden five. Austin Wilson came off the bench to score four points.

Three Blue Devils, Troester, Golden and Jordan Cornwell fouled out of contest in the final period. GAHS committed 22 personal fouls in the rough and tumble contest. Marietta had 19, losing Perry Wheeler.

Tyler Davis led MHS with seven points. Wes Riley and Tim Grosel added six apiece.

Both teams were off at the foul line. GAHS was seven of 20 for 28.6 percent. MHS was a little better with 14 of 24 attempts for 58.3 percent.

GAHS canned 14 of 34 field goal attempts for 41.4 percent. Gallipolis was nine of 26 from two-point range, and five of eight behind the arc.

Marietta sank 10 of 41 for 24.3 percent. GAHS gad 35 rebounds to Marietta’s 29. Troester led the Devils with 11. GAHS had 13 assists and nine steals.

Elberfeld had four assists for GAHS and Cornwell had three steals.

Marietta had six steals and two assists.

In Friday’s opening game, Coach Greg Atkins Blue Devil yearlings improved their record to 4-1 with a 51-42 triumph over the Tiger frosh. Marietta dropped to 2-3 on the year.

Gallipolis led 12-5, 20-16 and 32-27 at the quartermarks.

For GAHS, Jim Clagg tallied 24 points. Caleb Campbell added nine, Justin Bailey eight, T. J. McCalla four, Nick Clagg and Jeremy Wilson three and Cody Call two.

Jared Hammonds and Jordan Satterfield scored 10 each for the Little Tigers.

Marietta’s reserves broke open a close game in the final period by outscoring the GAHS Blue Imps 15-1 to post a 41-17 win over the Gallians. The loss left GAHS 2-2 overall and 0-1 inside the Southeastern Ohio League. Marietta improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league action.

MHS led 6-1, 18-12 and 26-16 at the quartermarks.

Here is the Marietta Times version:

http://www.mariettatimes.com/page/conte ... l?nav=5025

56 turnovers in the game and only 16 steals. Large number of walks(many more could have been called) and throwing the ball out of bounds, especially Gallia. Neither the player effort nor the coaching was poor.

The positives were the Tigers were able to score 22 points in the last quarter, about 50% more than the first 3 qtrs combined(but missed the FT to tie the game late), and Gallia was 5/10 on treys, and Moore was 5/6 on FT for the game, all in the 4th qtr(without those Gallia would have been 2/14 for the game).

Coach Oz called a time-out before each of the last two FTs of the game, both by Gallia with 4 sec left, and both with a 3 point lead. I'm sure the 2nd time-out was to set the defense in the case of a miss. The Tigers didn't call their last time out when they rebounded the miss to try to not let the defense get set, but of course it was already set, with a concentration to try to intercept the rebound outlet pass, which they did to win the game. I really like both coaches styles, but the many years of experience may have paid off in the final 4 sec.

I don't think either of these teams will be in the chase too long for the league championship.

Who and what sparked the scoring for gallia in the second half? To score 9pts and then 31 something or someone had to change or step up. Who made the 2 freethrows with 14 seconds left and a one pt game. The paper really didn't tell us much.

How many of Troesters rebounds came in the 2nd half? How long did the 3 players sit with the foul trouble and how much of this was at the end of the game. Sound like Calvert made a very heady play at the end. Is Wilson getting in shape?

I hope to make it to some games before the season ends so i don't have to ask so many questions.

Ethan Moore made the 2 FT with 14 sec left, and 3 others in the 4th qtr. The only other Fts made in the game by Gallia were two in the 1st qtr, one each by Troester and Golden. Gallia mised all four of the front ends of the one and bonus opportunities they had.

Yes, Gallia scored a FG to go up 38-30 with about a minute to go. I think they then missed the front end of two ono and one opportunities and had a couple turnovers. For Marietta, Riley made two FTs at 0:50, Wheeler made two FT at 0:43, Riley made one of two FTs at 0:27, and then with 0:18 left, Wynn made a lay-up and was fouled to bring it to 38-37, but he missed the FT. Then Miller stopped the bleeding for Gallia and made two FT at 0:14. I have no idea why Gallia put Marietta at the line so much when they had a good lead and under a minute to play, especially on the drive by Wynn who was inside the arc with the deficit at three.
