Gallipolis ends Marietta hex, 40-37

Visiting Gallipolis scored its first victory over Marietta in Sutton Gymnasium in six years Friday night, 40-37. It was the 2009-10 Southeastern Ohio League opener for both schools.
Last GAHS varsity win at Marietta was 80-63 in a second round game in 2003
Gallipolis improved its season record to 3-1 while Marietta dropped its second game in three starts.
Gallipolis was scheduled to play a non-league game at Meigs Saturday evening, weather permitting, but the twinbill was postponed because of the weather. No makeup has been made.
In a topsy-turvy contest, the Tigers and Blue Devils made 41 personal fouls and recorded a total of 53 turnovers. GAHS committed 23 miscues and Marietta 28.
Marietta started out like a house afire with a 9-4 advantage. The Tigers led 14-9 during the halftime break. GAHS broke it open in the third stanza by outscoring MHS, 12-1 to take a 21-15 lead into the final period. GAHS held MHS to no field goals in 10 tries in the third stanza.
The Blue Devils increased their lead to eight points, 38-30, with 59 seconds left on a goal by Jared Golden, but MHS came back at the foul line to make it 40-37 with 14.5 seconds and had a chance to tie the score but Chuck Calvary stole a rebound pass with four seconds left to seal the victory.
Ethan Moore paced GAHS with 15 points. Big John Troester added nine markers., Corey Eberhard had six and Golden five. Austin Wilson came off the bench to score four points.
Three Blue Devils, Troester, Golden and Jordan Cornwell fouled out of contest in the final period. GAHS committed 22 personal fouls in the rough and tumble contest. Marietta had 19, losing Perry Wheeler.
Tyler Davis led MHS with seven points. Wes Riley and Tim Grosel added six apiece.
Both teams were off at the foul line. GAHS was seven of 20 for 28.6 percent. MHS was a little better with 14 of 24 attempts for 58.3 percent.
GAHS canned 14 of 34 field goal attempts for 41.4 percent. Gallipolis was nine of 26 from two-point range, and five of eight behind the arc.
Marietta sank 10 of 41 for 24.3 percent. GAHS gad 35 rebounds to Marietta’s 29. Troester led the Devils with 11. GAHS had 13 assists and nine steals.
Elberfeld had four assists for GAHS and Cornwell had three steals.
Marietta had six steals and two assists.
In Friday’s opening game, Coach Greg Atkins Blue Devil yearlings improved their record to 4-1 with a 51-42 triumph over the Tiger frosh. Marietta dropped to 2-3 on the year.
Gallipolis led 12-5, 20-16 and 32-27 at the quartermarks.
For GAHS, Jim Clagg tallied 24 points. Caleb Campbell added nine, Justin Bailey eight, T. J. McCalla four, Nick Clagg and Jeremy Wilson three and Cody Call two.
Jared Hammonds and Jordan Satterfield scored 10 each for the Little Tigers.
Marietta’s reserves broke open a close game in the final period by outscoring the GAHS Blue Imps 15-1 to post a 41-17 win over the Gallians. The loss left GAHS 2-2 overall and 0-1 inside the Southeastern Ohio League. Marietta improved to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in league action.
MHS led 6-1, 18-12 and 26-16 at the quartermarks.
Tyler Eastman paced GAHS with seven points. Cody Billings added five. Sophomore starter Joel Johnston sat out the game with an injury. Marietta placed three men in double figures, led by Alex Wesle’s 11 points. Nate Thompson and Eli Lennington each scored 10 points for the Tiger Cubs.
