I'll let others chime in but I'd say what should increase a rivalries ranking should be: length standing of a rivalry. Win/losses between the schools within a reasonable amount. Proximity. Hatred. Story lines. Relevant programs. Solid prospects. Student/ fan involvement.

Peebles/North Adams is probably the best in SEO. We have the proximity(9 miles), story lines, huge fan support, winning traditions, and deffinately the hatred.

Piketon vs Waverly has to be near the very top. Can practically write a book on the hardwood series and then the history down through the ages between the Village and City going all the way back to the disagreement over the county seat.
Criteria:
Length of rivalry: Read where they've been playing since 1914? and have played well over 100 times
Wins/Losses: Waverly 60% to 40% advantage overall yet last 10 games are 50%-50%
Proximity: Can't get much closer than Piketon and Waverly
Hatred: Strong word to use, it's heated - sportmanship has been excellent and hope it stays - was told way back in the 1940s coaches got in a wrestling match at midcourt during a game and had to be separated
Story Lines: they go on and on
Relevant programs: Both have been very competitive over the last 20 years and down through ages
Solid prospects: Both of produced several college players down through the years
Student/Fan involvement: Just attend the Waverly Tournament and you'll see standing room only - was told a player had a glass pop bottle thrown at him from the stands during a game back in the day

I know the athletics of these two schools haven't been the strongest as of late, but Rock Hill and Coal Grove have a pretty good rivalry. These two teams flat hate each other, and when you go to one of these games your normally in for a treat. You expect to see some good blood, and nice trash talking. And they normally come down to the wire. ex: Coal Grove hitting the buzzer beater @ RH earlier this season to take the W. This rivalry started in football where the two would flat beat each other to death. Has be going on since I can remember... And Im caught up on my history. ;P

Webster and Burg has always been a good rivalry amongst the years, but as of the past few years, the Jeeps seem to be developing a rivalry with Oak Hill* It's all fun and games, though, and rivalries are what make sports so competitive and worthwile =)

Chillicothe-Zanesville can't qualify because it was only a rivalry for 3 years. The most heated 3 year rivalry in history maybe but untill joining the SEOAL they hadn't played in a long time and aren't playing this year.
CHILLICOTHE-PORTSMOUTH has to be one of the best if not THE BEST.
In all sports(especially football and basketball) they are rivals. I don't know when their first Bball contest was but their first meeting on the gridiron was in 1898. With Tuesday's Double overtime victory by the Cavs the series is tied. (42-42 or somethin like that) Both teams have fairly large followings. The students don't like each other. (as evidenced by the student sections needing seperated after the game yesterday. The players don't like each other but they certainly RESPECT each other. Speaking for myself, I hate Portsmouth but I have a lot of respect for those who have worn that uniform. Both programs have State Titles. Both are among the leaders in SEO in wins in the district tournament all time(most of those wins coming in D1 by both teams). Both have sent tons of players to D1 colleges and even the NBA over the last hundred something years. Rival cities for business. Both on 23 and seperated by a very short distance when you think of the historically larger schools in SEO.
IMO this is the best rivalry in SEO.
Probably followed by Waverly-Piketon IMO.
Burg has a few good rivalries as well.

Wheelersburg and Minford have always had a very competitive rivarly in every sport, not just basketball.
Wheelersburg and Portsmouth is another one that has been a very good rivalry over the years.

Back in the day Northwest/Valley was just pure hatred...there for a while the rivalry died down but I can see a hatred starting to build back up between the 2 schools...it's weird for people that basically live in the same area to be COMPLETELY different in every way

EXACTLY!!!!!
i dunno how many times in south webster sports i have heard refrences to " when we play wheelersburg " but i think it is like that for every school in the county. thats just a compliment to wheelersburg though, everyone measures their game to how it is compared to wheelersburg and what would have happened had they been playing wheelersburg.

I feel unbiased on this topic. I may have built some subconscious walls and or favorites, but if so they must be deep. From what I have read so far datchillicav makes the best case. However, I bet there are a few river teams that must have some long-standing hatred toward each other (probably the reasons for which are long forgotten). But, doubt they can top the 23 rivals as far as scale and relevence.

I think the best rivalry is Parents vs coaches...seem to me the coaches use to dominate but parents have found out going to the board and adm and complain is like performance enhancement drugs.. its getting the job done...
Ok I thought this might make someone out there laugh

North Adams/Peebles
2008-09 Student from Peebles tackles North Adams mascot! LOL
A great rivalry since the schools were built, plenty of bad blood, nine miles west 'til you smell it, SEO P.O.Y. possibilities every year, two of the best crowds in the SHL, the list goes on.

Peebles/ NA
Length of rivalry: the two schools have only been in existence since 1970, however in the early 60s Seaman and Peebles battled it out for the AC tournament crown 3 times, with Peebles winning twice. (Back then I'd have to say Franklin & Winchester were bigger rivalries.) Peebles mostly dominated the meetings until the 80s, when the tide started to turn. In 1985 Peebles won a 5-overtime game, but NA knocked them from the sectional. NA had some abysmal years in the late 80s, but began their rise as Peebles was beginning their decline. In 1993 both teams had powerhouse squads.
Wins/Losses: From 1970 to 1990, Peebles was dominant, I'd guess in the range of 70%, at least. Again, it swung back the other way, with Peebles beating North Adams just 5 times (I think) since 1993 (and 2 of those wins were this year).
Proximity: 8 miles away, but what a difference those 8 miles make, as the mailboxes go from saying "Kremin" to "Copas."
Hatred: No fights have broken out, but we've had some dirty fouls over the years. A Peebles student tackled the NA mascot last year. Mostly Peebles was up and NA was down, and when the roles were reversed PHS didn't like it much...I'd say NA fans aren't liking the pendulum swing this year, either.
Story Lines:
On the girls side, NA star guard Angie Haslam transferred to Peebles for her senior year. When NA played at Peebles that year, the gym was standing room only and Devils fans carried signs that said "Traitor." (Peebles wins, btw). On two different occasions a NA player has beaten the school's scoring record in a Peebles gym, which stings, it just stings. 2008-09 had two of the most competitive rivalry games the schools have ever played.
Relevant programs: Over the past 40 years, these have been THE two most dominant schools in our area...just rarely at the same time.
Solid prospects: The list of incredible players produced by these programs over the years is staggering. Marc Kremin, Nathan Copas, Joe Ryan, Kraig Unger, Chuck Johnson, Troy Storer, Kelly Copeland, Eric Evilsizer...on and on and on....
Student/Fan involvement: Well, again...booing a teenage girl and calling her traitor, tackling a mascot...and no one in these two communities has a regular bowel movement on days they play...
Any other stats/stories I'm missing out on guys?

Back in my days9the early 80,s, there was none bigger than Portsmouth-Wheelersburg....near riots after the 80 game at Portsmouth High School.Former Portsmouth Asst Mike Lovenguth taking the Pirates past Portsmouth in the same season at the convo. Great players from both schools. Todd Staker, Brad Walke, etc etc from Burg.Craig Tubbs, Jeff Lisath, etc etc from Portsmouth
But I do believe we were all able to have a bowel movement .....huh? lol
