Article on 1990 Athens Bulldogs Vs 2010 Athens Bulldogs
I may have rushed the article a bit - but its still pretty interesting ... you can check it out at ...
http://trivalleyconference.com/Feature_Article.html
The 1990 team also finished its season at 19-2 overall, just like this years team ... the article has some pitcures from 1990 and this year and takes a look at both teams ... I even included a 'prediction' at the end - hopefully I won't take too much flack over it ... lol
The link to the article is in the middle of the front page on trivalleyconference.com
(If there are any mistakes, please notify me ... I tried to research as much as possbile but in the end I just wated to get it out so I may have made a mistake or two ... I watched first hand both teams play pretty much every game, thx to Nelsonville T.V cable with this years team - and my insight is totally oppinion so don't take it to heart.)

Larusso .. what makes you think that? I don't think with the way Coach Skinner had his team playing defense that any team (with similar athletes) couldbeat them by as many as they wanted. Granted, the 1990 team was really, really good - but so was this years team ... I watched all 42 games between the two teams and I truly believe it would be a close, close contest. Did the '90 team have more offensive fire power? Perhaps. But the 2010 group had an outstanding defense and enough talent on offense to hang with them.
Maybe we can get some insight from Coach Gibson on this thread soon ... He coached the '90 team and covered this years team for Nelsonville T.V. cable ... His view or take on the matter will be about as accurate as anyone can come up with.

The 2010 Athens basketball team was a very good team as was the 1990 team. In comparing both team schedules though I don't see where there is much controversy. Since we are speaking theoretically and this match-up will never happen. I have to believe that history will remember the 1990 team as the better team, and possibly the best in Athens high school history.

I believe I did predict the 1990 team to win in a fantasy match-up ... I just can't see them winning by as many as they want ... Both teams were loaded with talent amongst the starting five that's for sure, but to say one is far better than the other I just don't see ...

Its too bad we couldn't get 'em all back together (the '90 team) for an old timers game versus the 2010 kids ... A few of them might drop to floor and have a heart atack during the game, but it could be competitive for maybe a few minutes ... lol
Re: Article on 1990 Athens Bulldogs Vs 2010 Athens Bulldogs
Tough call. The 89-90 team had great chemistry and so did the 2009-10 squad. Several members of the 90 team have been selected to the AHS Hall of Fame. This years team will have to wait several years to see if they match up. Coaching a team and watching a team play can give you a much different perspective. This years team did not dominate anyone like the 90 team, but they always found a way to win. Neither team had the standout player like we had with Steve Bruning, who was the MVP three years in a row in the early 80's. Those teams made it to the District all three years and were district runner-up twice. Conjecture is fun, but lets just say it was fun being around all three eras.

you could if you found the right people to organize a yearly alumni game. That would be pretty cool

This is awesome Bulldog. I love the article. I remember that 1990 team. I was coaching at Shade , yes that is right the Shade 8th grade ( I was maybe 20 at the most) and lost a 4 overtime game to that 1990 group when they were in the 8th grade at the Athens Middle School gym.

Might be giving this years team too much credit
Vinton County had them down double digits at home and couldn't hang on
Is Athens losing alot because it sounds to me like VC has alot coming up

lol .. Ax Grinder ...
Bumpinroad ... Athens JV team went something like 17-2 - or in that ballpark - so I guess the answer is yes.
CoachSkinner ... I was hoping you would like it ... as opposed to slapping me upside the head when you see me this sping for calling the 4-point win by the '90 group.

Uh Uho ... I sure hope Coach Skinner doesn't see that post Bulldog64 ... He might want to throw down the gauntlet and demand you gather those old timers for a little 5-on-5 match-up ...
... Just make sure he agrees to 3:00 minute quarters so none of them end up at O'bleness.
(BUT) Ive actually scene Nate Schaller around and he looks as if he could go for at least a half ... Strickland looked to be in pretty good shape too charging after that umprie last spring when Kent State visited the Bobcats ... All the Reed boys are physical fitness finatics so I know he would be good to go ... Not sure about Scott D though, I don't think he could make it past the first quarter ... lol
