That was one of the weaker Tomcat teams I've seen in a while

Kevin said that Ashland is the second winningest team in all of KY.
Their players are routinely scouted by major colleges.
Why would you belittle them? They scheduled [undoubtedly many months ago] several games back-to-back, and maybe when it came down to it, didn't have the stamina to do that many games in a row. Ironton soundly beat a GOOD team. - give them that credit - don't belittle the opposition! Ashland played hard to the very end! They are always a worthy and respected opponent!!

Any time Ironton beats Ashland in basketball it's a great win. I don't care how good or bad the Tomcats are supposed to be. They always take their basketball very seriously, even more so since their success vs. Ironton in football has been just a bit below par lately.

Agreed - And from the Ironton Tribune
http://www.irontontribune.com/2010/12/0 ... and-93-73/
STATS
Ashland 13 17 19 24 = 73

Ironton 30 15 22 26 = 93

Steals: 9 (Carter 3, Morton 3, Elliott 2). Turnovers: 14. Blocked shots: Fletcher 2, White 1.
I guess you might call that a "working out the kinks" first game? If so, then keep on working Ironton Fighting Tigers! I don't understand all the "negativity" expressed on here recently about Fighting Tigers basketball. They sounded pretty good to me in this first game against a strong opponent!

Sometimes talent will prevail over poor coaching...

Say what?? You might complain about "poor coaching" in a close game - win or lose - but not in a 20-point victory. Mercy - the Fighting Tigers got it undisputably DONE right straight out of the box!

Talent took that game over. Not coaching..As I said before this was not one of the Tomcats better teams. We will see when coaching does matter.

So the fact Ashland had 2 games under their belt and was 2-0 means they just played 2 really bad teams then right?

All I know is that one Ashland player had posted 25 points and 20 rebounds the night before, and followed that with another double-double (15-10) against Ironton, while another Ashland player erupted for 36 points against the Tigers on 7-11 from three and 7-7 from two. Buddy Biggs is a good coach with about 175 wins under his belt in a state that idolizes high school basketball, and he says in the Saturday Ashland paper, after his team dished out 30 assists in a 40 point Friday night win, that "We have 9 guys on the bench; they can play for everybody." Ashland may or may not win the 16th Region in Kentucky this year, but I'll take his word for it that he has some talented players on his team.

As for talent taking over, I suppose that is a thinly-veiled slap at Lafon's coaching ability. All he has done in 4 years at Ironton is win about 70 games, 4 sectional titles, 2 district titles, 1 league title, and sent a couple of young men on to play college basketball. He has also initiated a gem in the Ironton Classic, bringing in some of the top HS basketball talent in the country to the Conley Center, and is currently shepherding Ironton's move out of the SEOAL to independent status, which is never an easy chore for an athletic director, especially from a scheduling standpoint. Yes, he can be demanding on his players, but if you think that other local successful coaches like Ryan Davis (Chesapeake), Tom Barrick ('Burg), or even former Ironton coach Roger Zornes are a cakewalk, then you aren't paying very good attention.

What I saw on Saturday were two good teams playing exciting, racehorse basketball at near mid-season form. I enjoyed it. And the Ironton student section (The Jungle? Orange Crush? Lafon's Loonies? Agents Orange?) was lotsa fun too. JMO
