SHL Scores and Standings Week #3

Post by jchitwood »

The second week of the season kicked off league play, and from the looks of it we're going to have some real horse races in the Big and Small School Divisions. This week features some key league matchups that could decide if anyone goes home with the Gold Ball.

The Peebles Indians (2-0) improved to 2-0 after dispatching Fairfield by 25 points. They have a tough road came against Cleremont Northeastern on Tuesday. Manchester beat CNE by 15 points, but remember they had to come from behind to do it after the half. The Indians have to be on their best game when the Ripley Blue Jays (2-0) come to town Friday. This is the only time these teams will meet this season, both are favorites to win their divisions, and not to mention Peebles and Ripley have some of the most...spirited...fans in the SHL. This is definitely this week's BIG GAME.

The Manchester Greyhounds (2-1) return to the Gym Down by the River after playing two away last week. Coach Lockhart's Dogs blew away Western Latham, but fell just shy of a win at the Convo against Eastern Meigs. This week they look for their first league wins against Fayetteville and county rival West Union.

The West Union Dragons (0-2) have a good chance to pick up their first win against Southeastern Ross on Saturday.

The Fayetteville Rockets (1-3) and the Lynchburg Mustangs (0-2) have tough Tuesday matchups against Manchester and Ripley, respectively. On Friday they face off in Lynchburg. It should be a competitive game for both sides.

Eastern Brown (2-0) and North Adams (1-1) meet this week. This Big-School rivalry weakened in intensity last season, but both teams are well-coached and make few mistakes. Eastern takes their stingy defense to Whiteoak on Friday, while will be North Adams hosting Fairfield.

And finally we have our OTHER BIG GAME of the week, as the Battle of the Cats: Part I takes place on Tuesday. The Fairfield Lions (0-3) face off against the Whiteoak Wildcats (1-2) in a classic SHL Rivalry matchup. Whiteoak took two out of three from Fairfield last year, but the Lions won the one that counted, when they eliminated the Wildcats from the tournament. Whiteoak is coming off a narrow defeat to Oak Hill, and the Lions have struggled since losing center Chris Cox to an injury.

I doubt if I know much more than you. I read a little about them on maxpreps, and you're right: they play ripley and west union, after they play Peebles. They were 7-12 last year, last in their league. I heard good things about them from people at the Manchester game though.

They graduated their leading scorer, Varner, who averaged 29 points and 8 rebounds game. Other than that, I'm blank.

i don't think varner averaged near that many points last year. last year they were very weak at the guard positon and i doubt they are much better this year. they do have some decent inside players returning who did not play last year. losing their legendary coach from last year will be a big factor as well. i doubt that they will be as disciplined as they have been in the past.

I would think that CNE must be a decent team as they were up on the greyhounds after three quarters at Manchester.

Peebles is up 61-40@ end of the third. Countryman comes alive with 2 threes, then takes a hit to the face on a layup...followed by calmly sinking two free throws.

Whiteoak comes out on top of Fairfield, 48-46. Standings are current minus the Lynchburg/Ripley game. But unless an upset occurs, peebles and Ripley look to be the only undefeated teams in the SHL after tonight.

Was anyone at the eastern.NA game what are the napkin stats? I figured slamdunk would be all over this....

The wigwam...I like that. I'm going to use it in the Preview...granting you a (TM) of course...not only that, but Coach Young can snag win 400 at home against Fairfield on Friday.

No understating how big the Ripley game is though.

I'm DYING to hear details on the Eastern/NA game. We really need to recruit loyal fans from Ripley, Easter, Fayetteville, and Lynchburg to be a SEOP superstar.
