1,000 Point Scorers from area Schools - All -Time
Just wondering how many 1,000 point scorers can be listed from your (or any area schools). Prefer years and amount if available.
Chillicothe:
Anthony Hitchens- 1,745. 2004-2008
Gordon Mickey - 1,241. 1955-58
Wayne Stevens - 1,161. 1952-55
Steve Bayless - 1,157 1983-87
Neil Johnston - 1,028. 1943-46
Gary Hall - 1,049. 1958-61
Ray Chambers - 1,017 2006-08
Mark Bayless had 921 in 3 years and just 55 games. Missed some due to injury or would have passed the mark
Garin Veris had 916 to go with 1,000 plus rebounds in 3 years.
With the allowance of Freshman to playVarsity (not sure what years this started) it has allowed more kids to join this exclusive mark. M

I know of 5 for sure at Portsmouth High School........
1. Craig Tubbs........1977-1979........ 24.5 Avg. his senior year.....1,485 total points.......all-time leading scorer at PHS
Others over 1,000 are
Jeff Lisath.........1976-1978.......21.2 Avg his senior year., career totals over 1,200 (not sure of exact total)
Larry Hisle.........1963-1965........25.5 Avg. his senior year 1965........career totals similar to Lisath
Wayne Evans......2010-2012........15 Avg. this year,20.3 Avg. his junior year 1,010, 11 Avg. his sophomore year
Dion McKinley.....2010-2012........17.5 Avg. junior year, near 20 PPG this year 1,026, also started 10 games as soph.
Most likely over 1,000........Phil Whitehead.......1988-1991........averaged around 17.5 for his career, started 3 years
McKinley and Evans are the first tandem in Trojans history to both score at least 1,000 points, play on the same team, and graduate in the same class..........Craig Tubbs and Jeff Lisath both played on the 1978 state championship team, but Craig graduated a year after Jeff.

Trojandave, I knew my favorite historian would come through. Two things for you.
1). In going back through the Chilly history I found the teams in the 50's were real high scoring. I have asked some old timers if something was different about the game back then. No one seems to remember. Im wondering how many other school had high scoring teams back than. Clearly in the 70's the game seemed slower and lower scoring. That is why those stats are impressive to me
2). Neil Johnston from Chilly led the NBA in scoring for 3 consecutive years and was an NBA All-Star for 6 years. IMO, he does not get the recognition he deserves.

Hitchbone64: Looking back in Trojan history, I don't recall an extended period of high scoring Trojan teams (at least 70 PPG) with the exception of the 80's and early 90's........it was very common back in the 40's, 50's and 60's for PHS to score in the range of 45-65 points........I know that the 1990 and 1991 teams may have been the highest scoring in Trojan history, both averaging almost 80 PPG, going over 100 points in a game a number of times........while some of the teams in the dreadful decade of the 2000's (the worst decade in Portsmouth history.....52-100 from 2003-2009) barely reached 40 points a good number of times.
The 1970's marked the Tom Cuppett era for Chillicothe basketball, and while the Cavaliers had stars such as Mark Bayless during that time, CHS teams didn't employ an up and down the court style, at least from my memory.......Coach Cuppett's teams were well disciplined in the half court, and played some fierce defense at the stop end........no wonder the Cavaliers had probably their most successful decade then in school history........of course some could argue that the current run of Gary Kellough would be in the conversation, given that Coach K won a long overdue state championship for a program with a rich history.
Here's a stat for you, Hitchbone64........in 1994, Chillicothe beat the Trojans at CHS by a score of 101-60.......I don't know if that's a record for most points in a Cavalier game, but it has to be close........I was there that night........a night that nothing went right for the Trojans and the basket was 5 feet wide for the Cavaliers.
I think in the end that a coach's philosophy and the talent available are the main reasons that some eras seem to be more high scoring than other ones.........when Portsmouth has had the talent, and a coach who likes to push the ball up the court more, the Trojans have done that........but we have had talent laden teams that didn't play the uptempo style, which fit more with the coach's philosophy at that time.

No problem. Yes they did, they were two of the top three or four players to ever play at our school and they got to play 3 seasons together. Blake is second all-time in southeast ohio in scoring behind Dante Jackson of McClain who scored 2,423pts in his career.hitchbone64 wrote:Thanks Tribe. I just found that out myself. That is some serious scoring. I'm sure Blake's little brother will be climbing the point ladder A's well.

Jackson
Ed Spriggs 1800+
Brad Howe 1610ish
Allen Collins 1020ish
Matt Walburn 1004
Many from 800-999 and we've had 3 1,000 scorers transfer in the last 14 years....another one missed out due to late football playoff and sitting out parts of a couple years.
Whiteoak
Robbie Barnett 1470
Doug Morgan 1100+
Joey Barnett
Justin Michael

Without a doubt. He finished his freshman season this year scoring around 10ppg even, right on pace for almost exactly 1000pts. Undoubtedly that average is only going to rise from here on out.hitchbone64 wrote:I just found that out myself. That is some serious scoring. Brett Roberts almost had a 1,000 in one season during D1 college basketball!....or did he hit a 1,000? He led the nation at around 28 ppg? How many schools have a graduate that led the NCAA in scoring and pitched triple A in baseball?Swanker Pine wrote:To many to list for SW. Nick Aldridge and Kayla Cook are 2000+

Like was mentioned above, Neil Johnston from Chill is probably the only other SED player to accomplish something like that. He led the NBA in scoring three straight seasons and led the league in rebounding one of those years. He also pitched in the minors before he went to the NBA.Ironman92 wrote:Brett Roberts almost had a 1,000 in one season during D1 college basketball!....or did he hit a 1,000? He is not playing at the moment. He is going to Southern State this year. If he transfers somewhere next season it is possible he might play again.sparky wrote:tribe,

I'm not sure, I haven't talked to him in a while. Seems like that would probably be the best lineup Southern State has ever had if he did.sparky wrote:tribe,

i can name a few off the top of my head from symmes valley .. im sure i dont have them all but i know the top two scorers for sure..
don wilson was probably the most prolific scorer in sv history.. he averaged about 30 pts or more before there was a 3 pt line..they said he could shoot it from anywhere on the floor once he passed halfcourt.... he played back in the mid to late 60s and went to rio grande for a few years from what i have been told..
carl robinson (late 80s, early 90s..)
sly bloomfield (early 80s)
i believe kris tibbs got past the 1000pt mark
i know there are a few more but id have to look them up to be sure..
and jeremy fuller(current coach) was the all time leading scorer until 2001 with almost 1400pts in 3 years of varsity ball from 91-94
justin myers is symmes valleys all time leading score with over 1400 pts i believe in a 4yr varsity career from 98-2001
