Chillicothe nips Gallipolis 38-37

Gallipolis had a chance to defeat a Chillicothe High School varsity basketball team for the first time in school history Friday night in Hutton Gym, but a three-point goal by CHS star Zach Johnson with 3.5 seconds remaining ended that chance as Chillicothe came back to edge the Blue Devils 38-37 in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League contest before an overflow crowd.

Gallipolis’ Cody Call scored his only bucket of the game, a driving lay-up, with 9.5 seconds left to put GAHS on top, 37-35.

The Cavs came right back when Johnson flipped in a trey with 3.5 seconds left. After a CHS time out, GAHS inbounded the ball, but Call's desperation shot from mid court bounced off the rim as the game ended.

The Gallians have played Chillicothe more than 60 years on the varsity level, but never have beaten the Cavs.

Gallipolis led 12-11 after one quarter. Johnson, the Cavs top scorer, did not play the first eight minutes. GAHS was up 21-18 at halftime. The score was tied 26-26 going into the final eight minutes.

In the final period, Gallipolis had leads of 29-26, 31-28, 35-33, and 37-35, but couldn’t pull if off. Tim Bolt’s free throw tied the score at 35-35 with 1:13 left to play.

During the first two periods, GAHS had only four turnovers and Chillicothe two. Both teams committed 10 turnovers each in the third canto. GAHS finished with 18 while CHS coughed it up 16 times.

Gallipolis hit 14 of 38 field goal attempts for 36.8 percent. At the line, GAHS was eight of 14 for 51.7 percent. GAHS had 25 rebounds, eight by Justin Bailey. GAHS had 10 personal fouls.

Bailey led GAHS with 17 points. Wade Jarrell added six.

Chillicothe hit 16 of 50 field goal attempts for 32 percent. The Cavs were three of eight at the line for 37.5 percent. Chillicothe picked off 26 rebounds, 12 in the final period, led by Johnson’s eight snags. CHS had 14 personals, losing Wells in the final period.

Johnson’s 14 points paced CHS. Tom Bolte added eight and Nate Rosenbauer six.

Gallipolis, 4-8 and 1-4, will host Pt. Pleasant (1-7) in a triple-header on Tuesday with the freshman game starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, GAHS will travel to Warren Local (10-1 and 5-0) to begin second half SEOAL play with a triple-header against the Warriors.

Chillicothe will play a non-league game at Gahanna Lincoln on Saturday. The Cavs host Logan Elm Tuesday and travel to Logan (3-6 and 3-2) on Jan. 18.

Gallipolis averted a clean sweep Friday. The GAHS freshmen won 39-26 to improve its record to 7-2. Chillicothe dropped to 7-2 on the year.

Chillicothe led 6-3 after one period. GAHS led 1913 at halftime and 33-17 going into the final period.

Matt Valentine paced the CHS yearlings with 17 points. Devin Henry led GAHS with 13 points. Kole Carter and D. J. Drennen each had six for GAHS and Jacob Strieter six.

In the preliminary game, Chillicothe raced to a 20-4 first period lead and never looked back in a 49-38 triumph. The Little Cavs were up 24-12 at halftime and 43-18 after three periods. GAHS dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in SEOAL play.

Chillicothe improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in league action. Alex White paced GAHS with 10 points. Jacob Strieter popped in eight as did Devin Henry.

Kole Carter and DJ Drenner both had 8 points Jottings. And I think your way off on the scoring of Strieter in the JV game, as I recall he made one bucket.

Unfortunately, Chilli is now down to celebrating a win over Gallia who has finished last in the SEOAL more times than not. Give Gallia credit their kids played hard. I was wondering what happenned to Isaiah Johnson? Why isn't he playing for Chill? Could he have made a difference this year? Three wins in the first half of the season, good for Chilli they still have to go to Jackson. Chilli has lost the respect already, everybody wants to play them now. Those teams better be careful, Chilli still has more talent than most teams in their sectional. Z. Johnson can go off for 30+ at any time.

Coach must have had good reason to cut, i don't think a coach would cut 15-20 points a game unless there was good reason. Only two people know the reason, the coach and the young man. Move forward and give the coach some time to build. Patience, patience and more patience. Kellough started with Chris Givens, Anthony Hitchens and a few more studs and was around .500 his first season at CHS. Meister is developing team, discipline, skills and character so lets watch and suppport. Go Cavs!

What Freshmen for GA Coming up that can play the game??? at 7-2 someone can play the game.

Tremendous effort by Gallia Friday night. As always it is treat to see Jottings. A true gentleman. I'm glad Zach and the upper classmen are hanging in there. This is definitely new territory for them in terms of the record. The second half of the year is here. Let's hope the system starts clicking, the kids buy in and we finish strong. The sectional is pretty much wide open. I would love to get these seniors back to the Convo.

As for Gallia, they have some talent and the freshman Wes Jarrell is a stud. Once he understands the game at the varsity level, he will be a load for some teams in the Southeast.

This is 2013...that Bobby Knight stuff will not work with this generation unfortunately. Yes we need discipline, but don't take it to the extreme. You chase kids off. Sometimes you have to be smart enough to see what is going on in the kids home...where discipline really starts. I'm watching and supporting, but I can also see when a fish is out of the water! If kids can't get with the program, I totally understand...but things aren't always so "Black & White" we live in a "Gray" society. Just my two cents...that means absolutely NADA!

Good stuff Chilli Blue just please don't think i would ever be a Bobby Knight fan. You can't put your hands on anybody, its against the law! Ask any policeman. As far as the " Grey " social attitude i agree, but that doesn't mean it has to stay that way. I always have tried to think outside the box. I think the coach will settle in and lighten up a bit but maintain a firm hold as that seems to be his personality. Trust me, i just finished coaching another sport at varsity level for 7 years and each year brought new challenges that test your patience. Just trying to coach effectively in a defective world.

I guess I can't just let a statement go by about Kellough's first team. In his first year I believe he was in the OCC. The only team this year who might?? compete in the OCC that is playing in the SEOAL this year is Warren. Trying to compare Kellough's first year to what is happenning now is ridiculous. His .500 record is like going 16-6 this year. I don't think that is going to happen. But after Kellough's first year since you mentioned it, his Cavs won five districts in 6 years. Last years' regional teams and the last year they were there.
New Philli (1978), Waverly (1980), St. Clairsville (1982), Chillicothe (2011). Give the man credit. He won about 17-18 games per year for his time at Chilli. It could happen again now that they went to 22 game schedules but I doubt it. Chilli had a "Hall of Fame coach" and they let him get away. Ever heard of the curse of the Bambino? Ask a Red Sox fan.

Been B & B, i am not really meaning to compare this team to Kelloughs 1st season, i am just trying to make the point that give the new guy a chance. Many 1st years can be a challenge with new schemes, changes etc. Kellough did a fantastic job at CHS and i give him great credit. Sorry i rubbed your Kellough nerve but no need to call me rediculous, so keep your head in the game or you'll get a "T" baby. Go Cavs!

Gallipolis let this one get away, One our worst scoring performances of the season.
They really Needed a time out at the end to setup a defense against the 3 that was knocked down . Coaches should have called one. Good game wining shot tho .

They have 2-3 that could play some JV this year for sure. I think they'll be getting some varsity time next year as well . two 6-3 players really helping gallia at the 9th level this year .

Boo33... I wasn't calling you ridiculous just the comparison to playing in the OCC versus this year's SEOAL. I am sure Meister is a nice guy, he appears that way to me. I just think people don't help him by comparing him to the Cavs previous coach. That's a no win for him. Kellough has too many backers with good memories. I hope the Cavs do well but don't try to compare coaches because Meister won't win for now. Sure Kellough may have had a better record now versus 3-9 because the kids were in his program already and they knew what to do BUT Kellough's gone and now Meister is here so don't compare the two because you will always get statements like the one above and that doesn't help Coach Meister or the kids.

Been B&B, Your comments are right on. Gary Kellough is a Hall of Fame coach that has won nearly 500 games, 5 district titles, and a State Championship. What he did at Chillicothe will be tough to match unless a coach can win a state title which is unlikely. To compare both of these coaches or their first seasons is crazy. I wish Coach Meister nothing but the best and hope he builds a winning program. I just think it is different at Chillicothe and only some coaches understand it, and Coach Kellough was one of them. Go Cavs
