Chillicothe nips Gallipolis 38-37
Gallipolis had a chance to defeat a Chillicothe High School varsity basketball team for the first time in school history Friday night in Hutton Gym, but a three-point goal by CHS star Zach Johnson with 3.5 seconds remaining ended that chance as Chillicothe came back to edge the Blue Devils 38-37 in a Southeastern Ohio Athletic League contest before an overflow crowd.
Gallipolis’ Cody Call scored his only bucket of the game, a driving lay-up, with 9.5 seconds left to put GAHS on top, 37-35.
The Cavs came right back when Johnson flipped in a trey with 3.5 seconds left. After a CHS time out, GAHS inbounded the ball, but Call's desperation shot from mid court bounced off the rim as the game ended.
The Gallians have played Chillicothe more than 60 years on the varsity level, but never have beaten the Cavs.
Gallipolis led 12-11 after one quarter. Johnson, the Cavs top scorer, did not play the first eight minutes. GAHS was up 21-18 at halftime. The score was tied 26-26 going into the final eight minutes.
In the final period, Gallipolis had leads of 29-26, 31-28, 35-33, and 37-35, but couldn’t pull if off. Tim Bolt’s free throw tied the score at 35-35 with 1:13 left to play.
During the first two periods, GAHS had only four turnovers and Chillicothe two. Both teams committed 10 turnovers each in the third canto. GAHS finished with 18 while CHS coughed it up 16 times.
Gallipolis hit 14 of 38 field goal attempts for 36.8 percent. At the line, GAHS was eight of 14 for 51.7 percent. GAHS had 25 rebounds, eight by Justin Bailey. GAHS had 10 personal fouls.
Bailey led GAHS with 17 points. Wade Jarrell added six.
Chillicothe hit 16 of 50 field goal attempts for 32 percent. The Cavs were three of eight at the line for 37.5 percent. Chillicothe picked off 26 rebounds, 12 in the final period, led by Johnson’s eight snags. CHS had 14 personals, losing Wells in the final period.
Johnson’s 14 points paced CHS. Tom Bolte added eight and Nate Rosenbauer six.
Gallipolis, 4-8 and 1-4, will host Pt. Pleasant (1-7) in a triple-header on Tuesday with the freshman game starting at 5 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, GAHS will travel to Warren Local (10-1 and 5-0) to begin second half SEOAL play with a triple-header against the Warriors.
Chillicothe will play a non-league game at Gahanna Lincoln on Saturday. The Cavs host Logan Elm Tuesday and travel to Logan (3-6 and 3-2) on Jan. 18.
Gallipolis averted a clean sweep Friday. The GAHS freshmen won 39-26 to improve its record to 7-2. Chillicothe dropped to 7-2 on the year.
Chillicothe led 6-3 after one period. GAHS led 1913 at halftime and 33-17 going into the final period.
Matt Valentine paced the CHS yearlings with 17 points. Devin Henry led GAHS with 13 points. Kole Carter and D. J. Drennen each had six for GAHS and Jacob Strieter six.
In the preliminary game, Chillicothe raced to a 20-4 first period lead and never looked back in a 49-38 triumph. The Little Cavs were up 24-12 at halftime and 43-18 after three periods. GAHS dropped to 4-8 overall and 1-4 in SEOAL play.
Chillicothe improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in league action. Alex White paced GAHS with 10 points. Jacob Strieter popped in eight as did Devin Henry.
